I fail to understand how one Best Buy report = truth. Until I hear official word from Apple that there is a delay and no white phones are available at launch (not just for preorder), I'll continue to think that white phones may be a possibility.

Best Buy clearly has stated in their forums in a FAQ that Apple has given them no word that preorders will not be filled, and have said nothing about the white phones specifically. Some stores did cancel preorders but the official word from BB is that all orders are still on the books. Here is the official BB FAQ.

Apologies in advance if this is too much to copy/paste, but I thought some may find it useful.

Please note that effective immediately Best Buy® will no longer be accepting pre-orders for any models of the iPhone 4.

If you have an existing pre-order, it will still be valid. We have stopped all pre-orders due to the demand and inventory concerns. Still, proper expectations need to be set. A pre-order does not guarantee a phone on launch day and this is clearly stated on all pre-order flyers and documentation. It is simply a way of queuing our inventory whenever the store gets their quantities of iPhone 4 inventory. If your place in the pre-order queue is higher than the inventory received for launch, your pre-order will roll over to the second shipment and so on.

That being said, if you pre-ordered early you have a fairly strong chance of getting the phone on launch day. You will hear from the store a few days before launch to schedule an appointment. We will have a better understanding of what inventory we can expect to receive from Apple for launch day around the 22nd or 23rd. So, I encourage everyone to wait until you hear from your store before making assumptions.

This launch is big, to say the least. Every place that sells the iPhone 4 will probably be experiencing the highest demand for any phone release ever. We can only sell what we are given by Apple. I hope it goes without saying that we will do absolutely everything we, as a retailer, can to meet demand. But, the fact of the matter is it will probably be completely out of our control when it comes to inventory constraints.

Is Best Buy® still launching the iPhone 4 on launch day, June 24th, 2010?
Yes. At this time we have not received any notice from Apple of a change in launch date.

Does pre-ordering the iPhone 4 at Best Buy® guarantee me a phone on launch day, June 24th, 2010?
No. However, we do fulfill pre-order in the order they were placed.

Did Best Buy® take pre-orders for the black iPhone 4?
Yes, but we stopped taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4 16GB Black (SKU: 1038865) and iPhone 4 32GB Black (SKU: 1039188) on Wednesday, June 16th, 2010.

Did Best Buy® take pre-orders for the white iPhone 4?
Yes, but we stopped taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4 16GB White (SKU: 1039203) and iPhone 4 32GB White (SKU: 1049294) late Tuesday, June 15th, 2010.

What if I already pre-ordered either the white iPhone 4 or black iPhone 4 at Best Buy®?
If you have already pre-ordered either the iPhone 4 16GB White (SKU: 1039203), iPhone 4 32GB White (SKU: 1049294), iPhone 4 16GB Black (SKU:1038865) or iPhone 4 32GB Black (SKU: 1039188) then your pre-order is still valid. You will receive your phone once the store receives the product from Apple. This may or may not be on launch day, June 24th, 2010.

If I pre-ordered the iPhone 4 at Best Buy®, will I get it on launch day, June 24th, 2010?
This is not guaranteed and is completely dependent on how many the store receives from Apple. Any inventory received will be used to fulfill outstanding pre-orders in the order they were placed. For example, if the store has twenty pre-orders on launch day but only received fifteen phones from Apple, then the first fifteen pre-orders should receive their phone on launch day.

Will Best Buy® receive inventory of the white iPhone 4 on launch day, June 24th, 2010?
This is not guaranteed and is completely dependent on when the product is received from Apple. While we have ordered all versions of the iPhone 4 from Apple, we can only sell what we are provided with.

When did Best Buy® start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4?
We started taking pre-orders on Tuesday, June 15th, 2010.

When did Best Buy® stop taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4?
We stopped taking pre-orders on Wednesday, June 16th, 2010.

Does Best Buy® have a limit on how many pre-orders or iPhone 4 purchases each customer can have?
Yes, limit one (1) phone per customer.

What if my iPhone 4 pre-order at Best Buy® was already placed for more than one (1) phone?
The pre-order will still be valid.

Is there a charge to pre-order the iPhone 4 at Best Buy®?
A $50 deposit will be applied toward a $50 Best Buy® gift card. There is no fee for the pre-order itself.

Does Best Buy® require me to use the Best Buy® gift card, purchased at time of pre-order, towards the actual iPhone 4 purchase?
No, the gift card sold to pre-order your iPhone 4 may be used towards any purchase at a US Best Buy® store or on BestBuy.com and does not need to be used at the time the iPhone 4 is purchased. The customer does not need to present the $50 gift card at point of sale to purchase the iPhone 4.

What is the price of the iPhone 4 at Best Buy® with a new 2-year activation or fully qualified upgrade?
$199.99 for 16GB Black (SKU: 1049078), $299.99 for 32GB Black (SKU: 1049087), $199.99 for 16GB White (SKU: 1049236), $299.99 for 32GB White (SKU: 1049245).

What is the regular price of the iPhone 4 at Best Buy®?
$599.99 for 16GB Black (SKU: 1049078), $699.99 for 32GB Black (SKU: 1049087), $599.99 for 16GB White (SKU: 1049236), $699.99 for 32GB White (SKU: 1049245).

Will Best Buy® allow me to switch which particular iPhone 4 my pre-order is for?
No, since we have stopped taking all pre-orders for the iPhone 4.

If I recently purchased an iPhone at Best Buy® and want to exchange it for the iPhone 4, can I?
Yes, but only within the return and exchange period which is 30 days. We will not be making exceptions outside of this policy even if the iPhone 4 is not available within the 30 days.

Will my local Best Buy® store be opening early on Thursday, June 24th, 2010?
Stores have not been instructed to open early; but, each store may choose to open early if they would like to. Check with your local store on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 to see what time they are opening.

If I didn't pre-order an iPhone 4, will Best Buy® have any available for non pre-order sale on Thursday, June 24th, 2010?
All inventory will be used to fulfill pre-orders first. Only after the store has confirmed that they have more than enough to fulfill all pre-orders will they allow one to be sold without a pre-order. This is unlikely, however, since pre-order demand was so high. It would be best to check with your local store on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 to see if they expect any non pre-ordered inventory.

I recently just had a conversation with Apple in the apple chat:

Apple: Hi, my name is Channing M. Welcome to Apple!
Good evening.
Me: hi there. i hear many of peoples iphone orders are being canceled. Is there a reason for this, and to make sure it doesn't happen to my pre order?
How are you?
Apple: I have not heard of any pre orders being just randomly canceled, we will cancel an order if when we try to charge the card it gets declined.

Mind you this is probably some mindless apple gopher employee who knows nothing of the situation, but who knows.

Did any of the people who got theirs canceled get their credit cards declined? or did you order multiple iphones on one line?

I was scared when I heard the news. But my iphone order is still prepared for shipment.

Now I don't think its possible it's because there were too many. I ordered mine at 10:30 PM eastern time on apple thats set for delivery on june 24. There are others who ordered hours before mine that got canceled.

I will bet that you were not even 'chatting' with a real person. Just a computer.

Hmmm... I'm really glad i just pre-ordered mine for in-store pickup. I figured that would be the most trouble-free way and by the sounds of it i was right =]

I dont work till later that night so im just gonna show up a couple hours before the store opens and just chill it out. I'll have my laptop with me, hopefully get some WiFi in line.

I did find it pretty humorous today that while on my iPhone trying to sort out my issue with AT&T I had two dropped calls (San Francisco) and she had to call me back both times. :D

If Apple's website says 'White iPhone currently unavailable for pre-order or in-store pickup' - the "in-store pickup" should tell you not available on launch...considering that would be the only time you could pickup an iPhone..

I take in-store pickup to mean an order placed online for pickup in store. i.e. not related to stock on hand for walk-in customers. This would make sense, because if the phone is limited initially, then there won't be enough to go around to all the stores, explaining the no preorder or in-store options. Just IMO

Here are a couple comments from the BB rep on BB's official forums, found these interesting relating to stock, basically an agreed upon number of phones were preordered for launch day, and then they cut it off.

The fact of the matter is the customers that have come on here to ask "the same questions" represent not even close to half a percent of the amount of pre-orders we took. That being said, I completely get the frustration. All that is being said here is that we cannot guarantee everyone will get their pre-order fulfilled on launch day. We have no news from Apple that we are going to be shorted, so the majority probably WILL get their phone on launch day. Keep in mind we started taking pre-orders before any of the inventory rumors started floating around. The FAQ is nothing more than setting the proper expectations. If you were told by your store that you will get it on launch day, that is unfortunate; but, I suggest that you wait and see if you actually get your phone or not before being truly upset.

We have put all the proper pressure where it needs to be, I guess you'll just have to trust me when I say that. They haven't really been stringing us along since there has been no news since the allotment was arranged. No news is GOOD news in this case.

The White iPhone is unavailable because it's a CDMA iPhone. Only available on Verizon. :)

Okay, I'm going to ask this again, because TBH I really don't understand.

Why do you need the new iPhone on the release date?

Really. Why? Why is it so important that you get angry, frustrated, and irate over a freaking phone because you have to have it on the release day.

What ever happened to patience? Is it really so hard to wait a month before you get it? Will your life end over it? I doubt it.

I understand being pissed about Apple canceling pre-orders, thats legitimate, but really, why such the clamor for pre-orders? Has our society really gone that far down hill that when we don't get what we want right away its suddenly an outrage? It just reminds me of little kids with grabby hands that want everything, and then throw a temper-tantrum when they don't get it.

For those who had Prepared for Shipment as their status and then were canceled, what time did you preorder and were you charged a pre-authorization?

off topic, but...

i recently bought a 27" imac & need a travel case for it (not flying, just car) and was wondering if anyone had suggestions... I see the ilugger and the Bigsoso come up the most, any preference/experience with either one? Also, 1st post, and I know nothing about computers, except I really like the imac so far!

Obviously you are not a developer, or not a very good one.

Or you would know that a lot of advanced applications work fine on the simulator but not on the actual device.
True most of the early revenue is going to come from the 3gs, but having iphone 4 capability from day one is a definite plus.

Todays phone apps that make money, real money aren't just the little to do list ones, they are complexed apps with combination of objective-c and c++.
there is just no way to tell from the simulator the true performance on the real device.

And believe it or not there are developers out there that depend on iphone development for livlihood, services rather than app store revenue is a must quicker bigger payoff. But there are more liabilities.

And no otherwise I would not run down and buy a phone on day one if I didn't have to. This is my last post on this topic because I have more important things to do then argue with someone who has nothing better to do then criticize people he knows nothing about.

Really? You're going to release an app by testing on one phone? Nice.

And, yes, before you ask, my company develops iPhone apps and we would never release an app by testing on one phone. What kind of quality do you expect to have by releasing on day one? Again, just going by the comment you made about your app being complex.

I understand small shops don't have the resources to get a bunch of phones. But, that does not mean you should do something foolish and plan PR around a phone you don't have. What if you find a problem in your code? Sounds like a big gamble.

No. I'd give up the iPhone due to Apple being irresponsible as hell about this launch and giving no consideration at all to their customers. I sold my iPhone 3GS to buy a white iPhone 4. Had Apple given ANY indication at all that they'd not have a white iPhone at launch, i wouldn't have sold my 3GS yet. Even now, we hear NOTHING from Apple. Nothing.

Ever heard of counting your chickens before they hatch? You sold your phone without having a replacement - that's your problem. I offered my phone to a company and asked if I could send it to them after I got my new one. They said that was fine. Maybe you should think before being so "cocky"... or whiny...rather.

My theory: Skynet sent a mimetic Terminator to kill Chinese John Connor's parents (who happen to be working at FoxConn). After a long running battle with many casualties (you didn't think those people really committed suicide do you?), it was destroyed in a vat of white plastic. They have to clean that out of the system, which is why we have no white iPhone 4's on release.

You'll probably have better luck asking in the iMac forum.

I don't think Apple.com would cancel an order for low inventory.
Maybe for other issues, eligibility, CC decline, terms declined or??

If it was an inventory issue they would just delay the shipment.

IMHO

That's it! I'm switching to Sprint and getting an HTC Evo. Who's with me?! Jk... damn, why can't anyone come up with a better phone than Apple? I'm so over this shotty customer service. :( :(
