yeah im not a fan of the landscape. i used to think it was better but yeah i text a lot slower in landscape and i do text alot/ search the internet in my bed so it gets obnoxious. there needs to be a switch

This isn't one of "3000 settings," or a "little niche issue"; this is a fundamental change to the way that the phone behaves in your hand. After two years of behaving one way, several core apps on the phone now behave in another. Seems reasonable to stick a toggle somewhere in settings for that.

Yep, just like I said, some people will be pissed off about the decision.

I would guess the majority of people want it in landscape.

Maybe, someday, you will get your toggle for just the things you would like to control.

Good luck with that.

Seriously, if enough people want it (a toggle, etc.), I'm sure it will show up in a future release.

don't turn your phone to landscape then. some of us like it.

Which is exactly why we're saying there should be some kind of toggle, or a way to change it. That would accomodate both of our preferences. You know, some of us like reading our phone while laying down, sometimes sideways. Just because you don't use your phone like that doesn't mean you should have posted what you did. What an unhelpful post that adds absolutely nothing to the forum.

Look, I understand the whole UI issue; No one wants a million settings clogging up our setting screens because a few people don't like how it is. This isn't a niche need though, this is something they changed on the phone where some people didn't want it changed for good reason. Not because they don't want to adapt, but because they don't like it how it is.
Show me numbers. Concrete numbers gathered from a non-bias sample to indicate there is demand for this.

And, if there is demand, contact Apple. As I have said darn near 10,000 times here: SEND THEM FEEDBACK. They are the ones who make the changes!

And your car comparison is dumb, comparing car availability to landscape keyboard.

i don't hate landscape.. i just haven't realized it's there in mail.. and after you type a 200 word e-mail and then go... oh crap i have landscape.. it gets kind of annoying

Sorry, don't have the time. Apple changed the way the phone operates in a fundamental way. Some people have legitimate reasons for wanting it how it was that doesn't have to do with being inflexible. Put a toggle.

I have. Thanks for the concern, and for typing your demand in all caps.

Well now that you think it's "dumb" I guess I should just go hide in a hole and cry. The point was that you think people who don't like the new landscape apps were/are being inflexible and somehow just aren't embracing being adaptable, which I don't believe to be true.

I really think they are going to deliver what the majority of their customers want.

If enough people want a toggle, you can bet it will make it into a future release.

There is a difference between a majority of their customers and a 'vocal' minority, however.

A vocal minority has been known to get the ball rolling and create a majority....LOL

It is to some extent though. Realistically, what product fits exactly what you want to do all the time? My riding lawnmower shuts off every time you get off the seat (if a branch needs to be moved for example). I learned to adapt by sitting on a 50LB weight plate so when I get up there is still enough weight on the seat to not shut the mower off. See what I am getting at?

Everyone has different preferences for a device they own, some people love feature Z, others hate it with a passion. The best way to get through life is alert the proper channels if you really believe they will make a change, and then move on and work with it. Thats all I am trying to say, makes life a lot less stressful when people aren't getting bent about relatively minor things.

In landscape mode the A S and the K L parts of the keyboard put extra stress on my thumbs when I try to reach them, slowing me down. Obviously, this puts 'shift' and 'return' in the uncomfortable zone, and those get used a lot. The center of the keyboard is still fine, but the edges become much more difficult.

So when I type in landscape it strains the muscles in my thumbs and slows me down. That doesn't happen in vertical mode.

It has to do with how I hold the phone.
I honestly wasn't expecting someone to be able to really explain it to me.

Well done! :D

I found a bug in Mail. I ended up with both landscape and portrait keyboards. The top keyboard was not functional, as well as the numbers row in the bottom one.

Closing the app and opening it again wasn't enough to correct it. It showed up like that as soon as I brought up the keyboard. I had to power cycle the phone to get it to go away.

lol - When I start a whiney thread, I do my RESEARCH first!

Kids these days just come in here complaining about AT&T...MMS...whatever...they just b*** about it and then forget about it.

When I complain, I go full out!

It is to some extent though.

Not when I legitimately type faster when the phone is in portrait mode. I also enjoy typing while I'm lying in bed and not having the screen rotate. Those are legitimate preferences, borne from pure accuracy and usage enjoyment, not being against a feature just because it was changed.

Realistically, what product fits exactly what you want to do all the time?

None.

But your lawn mower has always stopped mowing when you get off the seat.

I agree, and I don't get stressed. :)

The OP has a point, he just wants to have a disable option not remove it completely

Amoebas seem to be more cogent than some people here.

Sure.

I've more than explained why I think that may or may not happen.

No reason to resort to personal attacks.

I honestly do not see how that is possible.

Not calling you a liar, just saying, how can that be possible?

At any rate, it should absolutely be an option and any argument to the contrary will fall short.

How is it possible? I dunno, I've always typed in vertical mode so I'm more used to it. My fingers are skinny and in vertical mode it takes me less time to move my fingers from one side of the keyboard to the other.

It's very possible and my typing in landscape is the proof.

I don't particularly care about it myself. But I just think that, as a general principle, changing a fundamental behavior of several of the phone's core apps after two years is worthy of sticking a toggle in there. This isn't like people saying "Oh, I don't like the new progress indicator at the top of the messages screen, so I want a toggle to turn it off"; this is a basic change to the way that people expect the phone to behave in their hands. All changes are not equal.

Not only that, but you apparently like to offer SOLUTIONS too. Something that a lot of "whiners" never do. They just complain over and over and offer no solution.

Yup, the OP already showed me the light but thanks for further emphasizing how it is possible.

Like I said, if enough people want a toggle, you will see a toggle.
And like I said earlier, a GOOD software company with foresight doesn't just change how something has been done for YEARS with no way to keep it how it used to be.

A crappy software company implements HARD changes, like Landscape keyboard, with no way of keeping the option the same as it used to be.

Sorry, but Apple = FAIL on this as far as I am concerned, and I am one who is VERY excited about having the Landscape Keyboards.

more options is better than less. therefore, i like the option to use landscape. and, following the same logic, i would like it (but not use it) if there were an option to turn it off. still, complaining about having an additional feature seems a little insane. like others have said, you can always just hold your phone vertically can you will be fine, no?

Yes, normaly.

But if you are laying in bed, on your side, and holding the phone as you normally would, you will get a landscape keyboard that is perpendicular to your body.

Landscape is slower because you have to move your thumbs more.

I hope they put add a setting to turn off landscape. I hate it so much.

Well, I would agree if you said you think this particular decision was poor, in your opinion.
It's a little on the extreme to say they are a 'crappy software company.'
The talent they have working for them, the market share increase in the smartphone market, etc. would probably prove they are rather good at developing software.

Again, if you dont like this particular decision, fine. That's your opinion. You are welcome to it. Just seems a little extreme, IMO to say they are a 'crappy software company ' because you get annoyed with a feature that many of their customers have been wanting.

Hey, maybe your toggle for landscape will go up in the priority list for a future update if you get enough people to agree with you.
