Exactly. Not Europe. Not sure it ever will either. Not that it bothers me. I’m not buying a new car anytime soon for myself.
Possibly for Mrs AFB but that will cost similar to an FSD subscription!
They are in testing in the Netherlands. Of course that has been the case for a while now, so we will see what ever comes of that.

EDIT: and Norway

Those prices all just seem insane for something any car manufacturer can do. Big wheels, big audio system, fancy seatbelts? and brembo breaks and for the price of a house. Yet with all that money the car still cannot drive itself. That is the biggest luxury I use everyday in an hour long country commute. I sit back and the car takes me there while I enjoy my audiobook or music. And with that I still have plenty of power to give me a thrill if I want to take over and put the accelerator down.
It is all about the unsprung weight ;) For it to be less, it costs more money. Always the case with cars in such categories.

Interesting, apart from the announcements, I've not heard anything else about it. I wonder whether they integrate software to disable it based on location. I mean I am like 15 minutes from one border, an hour and half from 2, and two and half hours away from being in 4 countries! :)

But I understand it is still supervised, so to me that is rather pointless. Now if I could switch off that would be great. This Sunday I'm driving yet again through four countries between our homes.

I see we do have this…

But you cannot just zone out and do something else entirely and not face Police action, obviously.

I still would not trust it given how poor our drivers are. Just when you think you have seen everything they find a way to surprise you (in a bad way).

Yeah here in California - the inside camera is a hawk - the moment I touch my phone or spend more than 10-15 seconds looking at something other than the road, it beeps at me and tells me to pay attention to the road. At least the jerking the steering wheel to prove I'm paying attention every 10-15 seconds is gone. It works with sunglasses too amazingly.

I drove 1100+ miles between Thursday before last and last Tuesday. FSD did 80%+ of the driving - and it did it perfectly even on sharp/curvy mountain roads. Helped a lot especially when one trip was 9pm - 1am - I look forward to the day when it is true Full Self Driving and I can do other things with those many hours of driving (read, etc).

HW5 is supposedly going to be tons better... Already HW4 is better than most humans (in my opinion). I've had the enjoyment of taking Robotaxi twice here in NorCal (way too expensive with a safety driver in it - but neither time did the safety driver have to do anything).

The amount of distracted drivers I see all over is growing - exponentially - so much so that any short trip to the grocery store and it's not uncommon to see someone get honked at cuz they're on their phone - holding up a line after the light turned green.

They all do that. Divert attention from the road and warning messages appear, alarms go off, etc.

One of the Chinese EV brands has an inbuilt assistant “Nomi” which is very abrupt with its warnings. Even if you are 1km/h over the speed limit (that’s a law thing) but even just briefly looking away for a moment brings a swift rebuke.

It’s probably funny for a few minutes but would get old quickly being told off repeatedly by the scornful electronic assistant.

And especially when such services rely on the data that isn't always accurate like speed limits. Like in Belgium and Germany its just a joke how often speed limits change on the same stretch of road.

Who would want that? I have a wife to do that for me! 😝

I think most L2 systems have switched to using camera detection of speed limit signs. They do have the mapped speed limit data, but if the sign has a different speed limit, it will work off of that sign. This really helps when there are construction zones with temporary speed limit signs.

At least I have noticed it do it in my area.

Doesnt' work well in our areas, it gets very confused when to stop, when to start, which one has priority. Combine that with timebound speed limits where there is a little white sign below the the speed limit sign that gives a restriction between certain times, or sometimes a only valid between those times. Or then when it's raining the speed limit changes. Nope I've never driven a car that is faultless at this. So you are in annoying beep heaven/hell.

It does not do well with timed speed zones here either. It just assumes that the posted speed limit is always in effect. When this happens (going the timed speed limit while not in effect) I just press the "fun" pedal to speed up. I have not had issues with other sign recognition (even temporary) due to rain. Here in the US, we do not have these beeping alerts (not required by law), so we do not get nagging (which admittedly would be annoying).

I can see how all of these would be an issue, but the purpose of the visual based approach vs. mapped is to work towards a good solution that can handle the real world.

I think it is important to remember (not speaking to you specifically), that we are working towards amazing things. We do have to start somewhere, much like looking at an early 2007 iPhone vs. a 2025 iPhone 17 Pro Max. It takes these annoying issues to get to where we strive to be.

I see my parents in their late 80's essentially trapped in their house, only leaving for medical appointments, and minimal food shopping and I think, how much better life would be for them if their vehicle could do L4. So, I do my part now, hoping that by the time I am their age, 40 years from now, we will be there. By my part, I mean using FSDs as much as possible and reporting any critical disengagements. Since the last major update at the ending of 2024, even with my older hardware 3 FSDs, I see a clear path to this. It is not perfect, but every year since I've owned my vehicles, I've seen significant progress with self-driving. I used to report critical disengagements regularly, now, I can't remember the last time I did. Disengagements now are basically because I am impatient and more of an aggressive driver in the NYC area.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Agree that future hardware/software will be much better, for Tesla and for all other manufacturers!

I think that any assisted driving is helpful when used with good judgment (sorely lacking these days). IMO these system may create EVEN MORE distracted drivers. And that can be dangerous in itself. Remember that every problem has a solution and all solutions lead to other problems. Let's just hope the assisted driving solution does not create more problems than it solves.

Love my Ford Blue Cruise for assisted driving - takes a lot wear/tear while driving long distances.

I turned off speed limit sign recognition to avoid it having to abruptly adjust speeds while travelling at high speeds.

It may, but it also may significantly reduce distracted drivers. I drive 3 hours a day commuting (26 miles each way) from Long Island NY into Brooklyn NYC. I now play a game with myself, just a bad driver, or are they on their phone when I see people not keeping up with traffic. 99% of the time, when I go past the vehicle, they are looking at their phone.

FSDs in bumper-to-bumper traffic will not hit anyone and will keep up. It does leave a little bit more room that I would like, but it will not cause an accident.

Is it just me? I'm seeing more and more distracted drivers not taking off at green lights and doing 20mph under the speed limits on the freeways full on staring down at phones while "driving" - more than ever before.

I have noticed a huge uptick since the pandemic... I also have been rear ended 2x since the pandemic. In all my years of driving, I had 1 accident (rear ended in traffic in the mid 2000's), then post pandemic 2x within one year.

People spent 2 years at home plugged in and haven't unplugged since.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with lock down. I think people are just more addicted to their phones than ever.

But then for me lockdown didn’t really change my life. I still worked all the way through and I didn’t change how much I went out.

In EV news if Mrs AFB is feeling up to it I’m taking her to look at a Renault Zoe tomorrow. Her 2012 Kia Picanto needs a new clutch so looking at some other options.

Since we here over the pond don't see Renaults - is that Zoe an EV? It sounds like from your wording - can you share some info on that model? Price, range, battery and such please

It’s about the most common one in the roads. Not made anymore. Was replaced by the Renault 5.

Range went from 80 miles for the early model to around 200 for the later ones.

But as the furthest Mrs AFB would ever drive would be around 10 miles (round trip) it would be fine for her.

Cheapest I've seen them for are £1,000, but I'd probably be looking at around £4-5k.
