How can those of you that haven't touched it make judgements about it, or even about people who drink it, when you haven't ever tried it?

I guess I envy those who don't drink any alcohol at all. Just a little bit. I'm certain that it's possible to still do everything from the crazy to the relaxing without alcohol, and I think if you're somebody to whom that comes naturally then good for you, whoever you are.

I do love a drink, though. :D Oh, the fun, the hilarity, the absolute raw experience of some of the times I've had under the influence of alcohol - I just couldn't trade that. The whole fanfare of it, a heavy wine glass, a delicate champagne flute or a poised martini glass, the ice, the pouring, the sipping - there's much more to the intoxication than the alcohol itself!

This is one of the biggest reasons I made the choice to start drinking. I found myself complaining that all my friends always wanted to drink when we were out doing things. They never tried to pressure me into doing it or anything, they respected my decision not to, but I got sick of complaining about something that I didn't even understand.

To those that do not drink, good on you, as long as you understand that it is very possible to drink and have a good time, while remaining in control and responsible.

Let's see...

-Brother getting beaten to an inch of his life by some drunks after a bit of fun.
-Friend getting run over by a drunk driver.
-Living next to a pub whose patrons think it's funny to smash our windows when off their faces and litter the road.

I've seen what it can do and I'm staying so well clear.

I for one NEVER EVER EVER drink alcohol... with my breakfast. :D

All other times are fair game though. In all seriousness, I dont drink a lot but when I do, I tend to over do it a bit. Otherwise why bother?
I'll drink to that :p

Actually, I rarely drink wine or sweet mixes. They give me a headache and make me sleepy before I finish 2 sips. Martinis (Bombay gin or Tanquery10, dry, neat) is an entirely different story. I can have a couple large ones and feel a nice buzz, but still in control.

Wine is the ambrosia of the gods. But pretty much every other kind of alcohol is good, too - beer (especially Alexander Keith's, from Nova Scotia), Scotch, whiskey, tequila, vodka... it's good.

I totally agree with the stupidity of drinking to get drunk, or, indeed, drinking to the point of total oblivion at all, whether that was the original purpose or not. Which isn't to say I haven't been completely wasted a few times - I have, which is why I know from personal experience that it's really not worthwhile, or all that fun. Especially the next morning.

Myself, it's rare that a week goes by without a drink - usually, it averages out to at least a couple of times per week, with at least two drinks on those couple of times.

I had my fill, but no alcohol for me anymore. There are other things more important to me that drinking interferes with... I blame alcohol and women for me dropping out of college. Might have been the coke or the acid, tho... I dunno.

I don't bother to drink. I have better things to waste my money on, like :apple: stuff :D Plus it's awesome going to the bar for cheap food and watching the hockey game and then getting a discount (sometimes anyway) for being the D.D. Plus my bill is about $10 compared to my friends $25+.

I don't care that people drink here and there, but drunk people annoy me to no end and generally I just leave when people get drunk. They wreck stuff, throw up in my car and generally make asses of themselves. A few buddies got beat the hell up when they got drunk and lipped off some dudes a lot bigger than they are. I laughed like crazy when I saw their black eyes :p You get what you make.

I don't...I'm underage, and it doesn't really seem a a great thing to do in general(even when I legal can!)

I like Soda though

I'm sorry, but for some folks this is just not true. These people are called alcoholics, and I am one. Although I wish to drink like other men, it is not possible because I am genetically different. Moderation is not in my vocabulary after the first drink.

:)

All of that is terrible and unfortunate, and no one would fault you for not drinking (at least I certainly won't), but that doesn't mean that simply drinking is to blame.

Some people can't say no, some people can't hold what little liquor they do drink, but just like George Bush doesn't represent every American, neither does every drunk person represent a person who drinks.

I generally don't trust people who don't drink. It is ok if you have and you have a problem. I respect that. Those people see what can go wrong and can steer you clear of it, when you go to far. People who believe that the sins of alcohol need to be cut from society really scare me. People drink, people commit crimes. Not all people who drink, or are drunk, are going to beat you up, or destroy your property. (I am a pacifist and a homeowner)

For me, a nice glass of scotch as soon as I walk in the door from work tells my mind to, "Slow down and enjoy what you have earned."

It is ok if you don't drink. Just don't think anyone lesser for it. That level of condescension is what makes me not want to hang out alot with my religious friends that I just geek out with.

P.S.

(I have had wonderful contests on ibook g3 disection blindfolded on a friday nite.) I can disect one, replace the hard drive and boot it up just fine in less than 5 minutes, 3 sheets to the wind! ......... Lord I miss my girlfriend!

i dont, i just take soft drugs cannabis and LSD

I saw this one twice but let it go at first. Cannabis is fine and probably better than alcohol in the short run and probably the long run. (Have fun going Corporate) But LSD: Watch yourself, you must be young and haven't seen the long term effects. A few times in your youth you will be OK. But, have you ever known a long term (< 1year) LSD dealer? There is a reason for that. It really changes you after a while. I have had really smart friends loose their intelligence and entire personality from over exposure! I don't want to hijack the thread but just don't think of that on the same level as drinking!

I've tried red wine a few times (yeah yeah I'm underage, but it's not like I drink all the time; or often, for that matter) And it does have a nice taste to it.

When I'm legally allowed, I may enjoy a glass every now and then, and try not to overdo it.

Add me to the list of people who don't drink.

For the folks who don't drink any at all - what do you do to take the edge off 'one of those days'?

Listen to relaxing music, daydream about impossible achievements (my form of meditation), and sing.

To all those people who said they don't drink because alcohol tastes horrible: TRY IT! I used to say the same, then I said it just about beer (I'm a mixed drinks type) but then I lived in Europe and I'm game for all.

I'm one of those who's studied and worked and so drinking was never part of the picture. But seriously, you're missing out on part of the college experience by not drinking. It's not about being wasted. It's just about loosening up when you're tense or just relaxing on the water/river/beach.

As the son of an Italian immigrant, I assure you that I've tried alcohol -- various wines, beers and sips of mixed drinks over the years. Didn't find anything that appealed to my taste buds.

And I didn't miss out on my college experience by not drinking. I don't need alcohol to loosen me up when I'm tense, or allow me to relax on a beach.

How can those of you that haven't touched it make judgements about it, or even about people who drink it, when you haven't ever tried it?

By observing the actions of people that they've known, and seeing how it affected theirs and others lives.

To those that do not drink, good on you, as long as you understand that it is very possible to drink and have a good time, while remaining in control and responsible.

To those that do drink, and think about pressuring your friends into drinking, realize that it is very possible to not drink, and still have a good time.

So you want those of us who don't drink to not think badly of those who do, but you have no problem thinking badly of those of us who choose not to drink? Maybe you should practice what you preach, and not think lesser of us simply because we choose not to drink.

How can those of you that haven't touched it make judgements about it, or even about people who drink it, when you haven't ever tried it?

I don't think they can. I think using observations of how other people act whilst drunk as a reason not to drink shows very low self confidence and total lack of self control.

If you really think you'll act like the worst lager lout then you really don't think much of yourself.

I have never and will never drink alcohol. Ever.

Alcoholism runs in my family, and I have seen and felt first-hand how devastating alcohol can be to you and your family.

If I'm even in the same room with alcohol I will leave. I don't want to be around it or anyone that is drinking it. I have seen too much damage done to have any tolerance for it, and I have very little respect for those that do drink, especially those that think getting smashed is "fun".

Alcohol is the one thing in my life that I have absolutely zero tolerance for.

I'd claim the same thing but the demi community know it not to be true.

~giggles at old photoset~

fyi, I started drinking at 14, like in pubs at stuff, to be honest I did have my stomach pumped at 16 or 17 I can't quite remember though that was due to real life issues now since mostly resolved. since then I get merrily drunk every now and again but when I get way too drunk I just get dopey and fall asleep on someone who generally carrys me off to bed. It's just not in me to go beat up some toddlers or whatever, those situation occur when you're a jerk and you drink far too much with other jerks. I've been beaten to a pulp by a stone sober mob many a time, drunk people I've never had a problem with.

You could have at least used a decent beer.

It's not ~that~ bad.

You know you've definitely got a problem when you start having vodka on your corn flakes.:)

Now you've given me an idea for next time.......
