A 5830 is easily 200% faster, a 5670 is easily 150% faster.

As in, a 5830 is 3 times as fast than a 9600, and 5670 2.5 times as fast?

And, like when was the last NON silent update for Apple computer hardware? Isn't all Stevetime given to new products, like the iPhone/Macbook Air/iPad now?

-IPS display. Finally 8-bit+ color!!! It would be a major improvement over the current Mac Books' TN panel. This would be more exciting to me than a mere resolution boost, as it would make the MBP suitable for color critical work(photo editing, video color grading, etc).

Just FTP'd a 680 MB scan to a client who is printing it at 16 feet wide, no problems at all with color from my 13" Shambo-Proof MBP with twin drives and 8 GB of ram. The client said the color was dead on, invoice him...

Why feb 10th?
Is that when Income TAX comes in LOL.

I think we will get a silent update and it will come when Apple updates the store. With them expected to ship in 60 days, I bet they will update the store any time now, maybe even within the week? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they offered preorders sooner than that.

For me, I am going to buy a new one on February 10th. If there is a new one available, I will get that. Otherwise, the current models will do everything I need it to.

Why? NOT waiting, given we "should" be close to a product update, is moronic. The only reason I could see someone purchasing a new macbook today, is because they don't know any better, or because Apple is handing out discounts. (which they obviously never do)

Do you buy a new 2009 hybrid automobile at full sticker price, when you could buy the 2010 model that gets 50mpg instead of 40?

If you are going to wait for a new laptop to be released, chances are you don't need one now and you shouldn't be thinking about getting one.

If you need a laptop right now, you would have went and buy one regardless because you have a need for a computer.

Most people don't care about product updates and they just need of a computer. If you have so much time thinking about updates and waiting, chances is that a new laptop is not your highest priority right now.

The same comments apply to cars and hybrids as well. When gas were $4.00 a gallon, everyone pays sticker price for hybrids. If you drive a gas guzzler with a fuel economy of 10 mpg, would you wait a few months for something that can get you 50 mpg or get a car right now that can get you 40mpg?

I WANT a new one now. I don't pay for my own. My employer writes it off. But I'm not going to bother with an incremental upgrade of the venerable Core2 processor. It's not even worth transferring my files off my current MBP for the stuff they have out now.

Not going to happen for the bad boys for months yet as they machines are near perfection.

FACT.

Why?

Because Shambo said so. Ask him about glossy vs. matte...

On a separate note, I suspect every thread on Macrumors today will end up in a flame war about people waiting vs. buying now. We're all pissed, but can't we all just get along?

Solid point. Between now and the "60 day shipping date", Apple will want to pre-sell the heck out of the iPad. While I would not rule out a silent release between now and that time frame, it certainly would be in Apple's best interest to wait until after the device ships. If you listened to the event today, Apple truly believes that they are positioning this device as a new option - or competition in some ways - to a laptop. They'll want to show dazzling numbers to support this so the media outlets will report hundreds of thousands of these things being pre-ordered. Even though the MBP refresh is not intended to detract from this audience, it could certainly dilute the interest in the MBP refresh. My bet is sometime in early April.

For now, I'm happy with my Dec'09 purchased 13" MBP with the SSD I added. That will get me through until I can get my hands on the 32GB iPad w/ wifi - just in time for vacation!

April? You really think Apple is going to wait until April to update the MBP line? They would be the worst business decision ever made by Apple. Think of how much market share and business they would lose. If they don't update by end of February then they are in big trouble. Even the general public would start to notice that everyone else has the Arrandale chips but Apple is still selling premium priced laptops with Core 2 Duos. That is just plain idiotic.

Personaly i'm waiting, because i'm sure just like Snow Leopard requires an Intel chip Mac, somewhere down the line a new version of the OS will require something like "Arrendale CPU or better"

so i think waiting to buy means the difference between having to buy a new laptop five years from now or seven. I know i'm being generous with laptop life expectancy, but you get the point.

The event was about the iPad and nothing more. The invite said "come see our latest creation" not "come see us announce new products and updates to our computers and phone"

Use your brains people.

Hey guy - use your brain. This web site is called MacRumors. What the hell do you think we talk about here? The timing is right for a refresh. Why wouldn't they update today when Apple has always added multiple product releases in one event? We expected it. It didn't happen. Use your brain and figure out why everyone and their mother believed the refresh would happen today.

Get over it man. It's just a computer. Drop the dime and get one. You'll enjoy it for the next three years.

Wow, you really drank the kool-aid. Why would I pay $1000 premium for a laptop that is a generation back in technology? Will the Core Duo run? Sure. And a horse and buggy can get you to work. But I'm not going to buy the horse for more money than a car costs.

I'm a long-time Mac owner, but I can't stand fanboys who tell everyone else to just take whatever Apple gives them and like it. The truth is, Apple has fallen behind the technology curve, and almost every other vendor is offering laptops with i5/i7 chips for LESS money than a MBP. If Apple wants to keep my business, they better start offering a competitive product.

Maybe.

I'm saying that it was clear that this event was for one thing only. The iPad. That's why Steve Jobs made no mention of any other product refresh or update.

It would be great to see something before April. However, I doubt anyone at Apple is losing any sleep over what a delayed refresh of the MBP line would do for their market share. While the Mac is a cult following and perhaps the sleekest laptop you can buy, they obviously aren't in it for the "market share" for volume purposes. The profit to be made from the iPad hardware is mediocre compared to what they are hoping this will do for the applications that developers will pour onto the platform. All the while, they will be brewing a silent update for the MBP line, but I just don't see them rushing it out just to include Intel's latest and greatest.

I would love to be wrong though and the counter argument here really isn't all that hard to make - these should technically be independent departments within Apple, so the MBP line should already be "refreshed" regardless of any iPad or other news. The fact that at this moment we aren't seeing the online store refreshed lends credence to the fact that they don't want anything to steal the thunder of today's news. But how long will that last?

While im disappointed as well , I dont NEED a computer.

Im ready to buy my first Mac but I can wait , no biggie

I think anyone that doesnt need a computer now , would be foolish not to wait

Personally I find it hilarious all the people claiming they are "not disappointed" that have just recently purchased a new Macbook Pro feel the need to chime in and proclaim how "not disappointed" they really are. Hysterical. If they really weren't disappointed they wouldn't feel the need to advertise the fact that they are supremely content with their purchase and denounce the people who've decided to wait for new technology instead of buying a product filled with 2+ year old hardware.

Let's get it straight then! If people are unhappy with the way Apple does business, someone else will pick it up right? So go and get the PC that offers that technology. It's not a crisis DaMan. It's a simple decision. If you need/want the MBP, get it. If the i5, or i7 is such the superior chip, get the PC. Too many people dwell on this subject. YES MY COOL-AID has sugar in it, and I love how sweet it tastes. I'll drink it for the next three years. No fanboy here. I'm just a fan of simplicity. If someone makes a better computer that is more enjoyable, then i'll jump ship for that one too. Don't get it twisted!

If you need a laptop right now, you would have went and buy one regardless because you have a need for a computer.

It is extremely rare that people NEED a new computer RIGHT NOW. It's just a process of becoming more and more difficult to get by. Even if your personal laptop dies, you can usually get by either with an older computer you've shelved, or your work computer, or whatever.

So unless there is something huge in the immediate future (exactly what would qualify I can't see) waiting two weeks is obviously the best choice, as obviously the next MBP will be vastly superior to the present.

I'm a little disappointed not to see new MBPs but neither shocked nor upset.

I'm going to soldier on with a work computer only until the new ones come out, since I'm leaving my desktop behind and my PB G4 is dead.

just want to add my 2 cents...

People who are waiting for the Macbook Pro "refresh" or "update" really are either people who have bought a mac before or who want seriously want one.

Now getting $1500 is pretty easy, but those who want to get the "high end" selections like the 15 inch to 17 inch macbook pros in which the prices range from $1800-$3500 (including upgrades). Really want something that will last them through some years.

Now don't get me wrong the line up at the moment is very nice and you can probably do many things with it. Though if you have been looking at laptops for quite a while you know that Intel has released the i5, i7 and even i9 chips for laptops, meaning that 2010 will probably hold faster laptops.

Bringing up $2000+ is not something you can do so easily, especially in these times. This quad core update is needed because people who can not spring $2000 instantly want a product that is new and faster than the old line up. So that they remain sort of in the zone, since technology after all is unpredictable ;). Especially those big programs that require a lot of GPU/CPU performance...
