I was thinking about it until I saw a few things:

1. USB2 lightning port - this severely limits future use cases involving external storage. It makes me really sad that Apple shafted this new iPad "pro" in this way.
2. Protruding camera - why...I have used the rear camera on my many different iPad's a total of zero times. And now it will never sit flat on a table.
3. No resolution increase. Not the biggest deal, but would be nice if there was a slightly larger display in the same form factor. iPad Air still has pretty significant bezels.

For fun I looked to see how much people were selling their iPPs for on a local website... they are all like 800 bucks for 128GB and there are a TON of them, (50-70.) Soooo.... yeah it isn't worth losing $500 dollars to get a machine that is smaller, slightly slower, and only has 2 actual new features (and even then they are meh.) "True Tone display" is absolutely the most pointless feature i've ever heard of. What artist would ever use that? The camera is nice, but I have my iPhone for doing 4k video. I would look like a complete weirdo walking around with a laptop size tablet shooting videos. lol

*Oh I forgot about the "most advanced display ever" that boosts brightness and gives more accurate color, (that's a feature I actually like) though I feel the Pro already is like that, didn't they do an RGB test and it was what like 98-99% on the perfect scale. I will wait to see just what this new display actually looks like in comparison. If it is wayyy good, that just gives me a real actual reason to upgrade my iPP next time. I imagine the prices will drop a bit too, just like the 5K imac did.

Kal.

I've been debating this myself. Picked up the Pro12.9 on the 15th and have been testing it out. Just picked up the pencil today and I am torn.

For me I really don't use the iPad for more than playing games, checking emails, browsing forums, and occasional basic photo editing.

The smaller IPP looks like an impressive machine. However, I just my large IPP (the original) at work for meetings and PDF documents. I think the larger size makes it the ultimate PDF reader and note taker, especially with the Apple Pencil.

I think the smaller IPP will be enjoyable for other people, though. Good luck to all!

Yeah, True Tone display does sound like it would be counterproductive for art work, but it'd be great for reading and writing text. I think Apple adding that feature to the smaller iPad Pro shows that Apple doesn't think of the Pro line as being only for artwork. It's also meant to be a great device for consumption, and for text based work.

I pulled the trigger and just bought an IPP 12.9 from Best Buy for $699. I have been holding out for the updated iPad 9.7 to replace my Air, but with it starting at $599 and the sale of the 12.9 only $100 more it was a no brainer. When the 12.9 came out I was on the fence, but just could not drop $799.

I'm one of people who bought 12.9" with Apple Pencil instantly right after when online reservation started. Honestly I was hesitating until very last minute, because of its high setting price and the size. And my first impression on my iPad Pro was exactly like "Oh M-G, it's huge!".
After I've been using iPad Pro for my digital drawing/painting(hobby) and watch movies and videos, now I am loving this size. Additionally once I understood the benefit of "split screen" thing, 12.9" is like two iPad mini side by side. Even if I open one side to use something else, still I can work on drawing on other side without super irritating. When I draw things on 12.9", that's just right size.
Today I just dropped by one of Apple Stores, just make sure I really don't like 9.7" better. Since I never had either iPad or iPad Air, I wanted to make sure what I think was right to me. The size, I can't compromise, at least at this point after I compared specks both 9.7" and 12.9". I was also one of people who wished if there was any smaller size of iPad Pro. But this time, it's just not good enough.

But if you use it only for game and reading emails/browsing online, you may feel comfortable with 9.7" better, just because of the size.
I don't take pictures or shoot video on my iPad Pro(even not on my iPad mini). I honestly don't care much about USB2 and USB3 different, but 12.9" has faster one, then can't complain lol
Resolution is much better on 12.9", and I don't need true tone display since it just bother me when I draw digitally on my iPad, I know it has mode which you can turn it off, but then why I have to pay for something I don't need/want?

I'll wait iPad mini 5 with Apple Pencil support, or next iPad Pro 12.9" major update.

Like you I think the display is absolutely beautiful on the device. Only thing for me is I am not much of an artist and if I'm home I'm watching movies and stuff on my Apple TV or on my laptop anyways which is a late 13' MBP-R.

With that I would be using the iPad for basic stuff like email browsing, game playing, and occasional web surfing when I'm to lazy to pull out the laptop.

With all that while the bigger screen is really nice I won't be utilizing it for "business" or "artistic" type of things. Saving the $200 between the two allows me to pick up the keyboard case and the pencil for about the same price.

That's just how I look at it.

Early reviews say that the 9.7" pro is too big to wobble, unlike the phone, even with the camera bump. And since the true tone feature is toggle-able, that means that the only difference between the two (for the purposes of illustration) are the size of the screen.

I may reconsider getting one, then!

Hey, if it will work for you, then it is the perfect solution! :)

I think I am actually going to pick up the 12.9" instead with the sales going on. Staples having the 128 gb for $799 $50 more for twice the memory alone seems like a no brainer. Having a discussion on another thread plus reading some of the comments from owners here that are happy with theirs has also kinda made me reconsider the larger size. I have been wanting to check out the pencil for some time to start doing some digital drawing/painting myself also. :)

That's what I have. Same kind of deal. I couldn't resist with the bargains going on. Just have my desktop, iPad Pro, and iPhone 6 Plus. The iPad Pro 12.9" didn't replace my desktop, but it sure replaced my laptop.

I pulled the trigger on an IPP 128gb model and pencil for $978 and change incl. tax since BB matched Staples sale. :D

I'm kind of torn, but given that I already bought the 12.9 a few months ago, I'm not going to take the loss and sell it. The main reasons I went for the Pro instead of the Air at the time was the increased speed and the awesome speakers. I own a music production company and I'm now able to play music at decent quality on an iPad.

While the smaller size does seem nice and would be more convenient when carrying the iPad and using it while holding it, when at a desk or table I sure do appreciate the larger screen size. Also, I have to wonder if the speakers on the 9.7 Pro are going to be as good as the 12.9 Pro. Something tells me they will be smaller speakers to fit the smaller size body, and therefore won't be as loud or as good quality.

Either way, the 12.9 is what I got and I will stick with it. Maybe next time I will go with the smaller size. Who knows....

Once you get everything and start drawing, there's another thread under iPad threads, "share your drawings with Apple Pencil"(something like that), I've been checking that thread for fun, there are some incredible art works and creative people.
I'm not the one who started that thread, but I know people there are welcome to anyone. Join us and check it if you'd like :)

Very cool! I didn't know about that thread. Thanks! :)

Ive been using my surface pro for jotting down some ideas on room layouts recently and I think the larger screen helps to give a decent ratio of tools:canvas.

I wonder if a 9.7" with pencil support would have too small a drawing area, as disproportionately more space would be taken up with icons and toolbars etc

I think it depends upon your writing/drawing style. I regularly use a variety of styli (capacitive and powered) on my Air 2 and find the size to be just fine. Obviously the 9.7 Pro would do even better.

Today I purchased a second iPad Pro as sold my iPad Air 2. My iPhone 6s plus does all I require out and about.

Now my partner and I have nice large screens to watch HD movies on planes and holiday trips.

If you require a smaller screen keep the Pro and update to a Plus iPhone.

With airlines cramming more seats and leaving little room in between, are there any issues viewing the larger IPP?

Thank you
