Add me to the list, i cant cope with vista anymore. I'll be getting 15" 2.4, with logic studio, i get a higher education discount too so hopefully if something better comes out later on in the year i'll get a relatively decent return. One question though, is the 7200 rpm hard-drive worth the money (£115) for music production and photography? I do have a 7200rpm 320gb external hard drive. Really wish i'd bought when the 2.6 BTO came into play now, ah well. Rich.

I have a 7200 rpm in one of our MBP 17" -- it is noticeably faster than our 15" MBP with 5400 RPM drive.

If you are storing data on your external and connecting view Firewire or USB you should be fine: If you plan on using the Laptop drive for Data, OS and Apps, the 7200 RPM drive will make a noticeable difference.

Just my opinion. Any others?

Ditto. People keep saying "wait, wait!". Guess what? Jan. 15th came, and you're still waiting. How long will you wait for a 5% increase in processor speed?

Im more concerned about the magnetic latch and trackpad that could be implemented. The speed bump would be nice too.

This is the right answer. My 12" Powerbook G4 died Monday January 7th. I waited until today for Macworld to see if there would be an upgrade, but no dice. I cannot wait any longer. I'm a student and I absolutely need to have a computer. I also broke my hand skiing last week so I can't even take notes with a pencil and paper.

Waiting any longer than today is just plain lunacy. Even if Apple DOES silent upgrade the Macbook Pros a week from now, you can pay the 10% restocking fee to bring yours back if you absolutely MUST have that processor / graphics bump.

I plan on picking up my new Macbook Pro from the Des Moines Apple store tonight, and I could not be happier with my decision.

Necessity > Potential 200 mhz upgrade. Apple loves the waiting game, but I don't need to play it anymore.

If I was in the market for a MacBook Pro, I'd wait until next Tuesday to see if Apple doesn't launch a refreshed model then.

I believe they announced the Mac Pro a week before MWSF to keep the focus on the MacBook Air, AppleTV2, and Time Capsule. As such, they very well might have wanted to do the same with the MBP upgrade and as such schedule it for next week.

My question is, why wouldn't they have updated the Macbook Pro along with the Mac Pro? It would have been drowned out by the Macbook Air anyway.

At least the way I see it, the Macbook Air is competing with the Macbook, not the Macbook Pro.

Just my two cents.

Just ordered a 2.4Ghz w/ 200GB 7200RPM drive. Was toying with the idea of the stock HDD, but I've kicked myself enough over the last couple of months and went with bigger and faster HDD.

I'll order the RAM in a little bit so I get 4GB.

The Macbook Air isn't really competing with the Macbook, it is priced out of that market. It however will probably have to contend with the Macbook Pro for sales due to cosomonauts who want a "cool" laptop.

People who buy the Pro for real reasons are not in the Macbook Air market anyway.

My question is though do you think that there will be a macbook Pro update before fall? I'm a senior this year in High school, and looking to get a laptop for college.. and like many places now, its about split half and half for PCs vs Mac used in the school I'm going to, so I want to get a Macbook Pro since I can run windows on it as well

But I don't want to buy a Macbook Pro now, when the update could be happening within a few months, even if its before the end of the year would be fine

What do you think? I think it has to be updated at the next conference

I would say it will definitely be updated by year's end. It may be several weeks or even moths, which is why I didn't wait any longer, but definitely at least another processor bump by the end of the year.

I think the question goes out to die hard mac people...

Is there any precedent set for an update like this to happen weeks or months after Macworld?

Has it happened before, and if so -- did it happen in a way that would indicate there is any reasonable percent change it would happen to the MBP?

I really need a new computer, but there is no way the multi-touch and latch won't be integrated into the next MBP.

Also, when is the next big Mac event?

Thanks for the help - MD

waitin' for the bump..........

.......till then, my Pbook 1.33 is just fine thank you....

just waitin' for the bump
....and pen processor......
.........and touchpad...........

..........................yea...................give it 6 wweeks max.........

here's something, albeit shaky: apple debuted aluminum 15" in september 2003 (from buyers guide), then launched (arguable) total refresh of the machine with macbook pro in january 2006. that is a ~28 month lifespan.

jan 2006 (mbp debut) + 28 months = may 2008

admittedly, it's only one data point, the numbers are rough, etc. but it does give a sense of how long they expect these models to last. hey, if the last lifespan is any indication at all, there's a big update coming. if you're not desperate for a machine, i'd wait a little while to see what happens.

(i bought my maxed-out mac in august 2003. i won't make the same mistake twice)

I was waiting, however, I will be ordering a MBP either tonight or tomorrow. the Macbook Air just doesn't over enough for me.

I honestly don't think speedbumping the MBP with the minimal increase in Penryn processor speeds would have taken any of the fire away from the MBA. The size of the MBA and the "oooh factor" is the main reason why people will be purchasing this.

The multi touch keyboard and magnetic latch would have been common upgrades for both machines so there is no competetion between them there. People who want sheer power would have bought the updated MBP, the others who are in it to look cool will buy the MBA.

I honestly can't see the bump happening within a week or so to Penryn as I would have assumed it would have been announced today.

Mine is prepared for shipment! Weeeee!

I hope it comes by saturday, I don't think I can wait until tuesday :(

Then comes the fun task of transferring everything from my MP to external drives and the MBP, and first installing Leopard if they still come with drop-ins.

I've been waiting since September for a new MBP and I'll be damned if I get one now. I'm really disappointed with Apple's lack of announcements but I waited this long, I can hold off another few months.

God damnit Apple, GET TO IT!
