Summer-Fall 2008
*Pipe dreams*
Like a lot of other people I logged in to Macrumors at 5pm on Tuesday (UK time) hoping for news on a new MB or MBP.
I am now quite dishearted, am going to give it to the end of Feb and then buy a base MBP with 250GB drive or perhaps may be go for a Dell. I am a new MAC user with a mini looking for a replacement for my ageing XP laptop.
apple would rather capitalise on sales of the air for 2 weeks before giving the mbp a quick refresh.
This is the right answer. My 12" Powerbook G4 died Monday January 7th. I waited until today for Macworld to see if there would be an upgrade, but no dice. I cannot wait any longer. I'm a student and I absolutely need to have a computer. I also broke my hand skiing last week so I can't even take notes with a pencil and paper.
Waiting any longer than today is just plain lunacy. Even if Apple DOES silent upgrade the Macbook Pros a week from now, you can pay the 10% restocking fee to bring yours back if you absolutely MUST have that processor / graphics bump.
I plan on picking up my new Macbook Pro from the Des Moines Apple store tonight, and I could not be happier with my decision.
Necessity > Potential 200 mhz upgrade. Apple loves the waiting game, but I don't need to play it anymore.
I am most likely going to buy a the current MBP within the next couple of days. Gonna go for a 15" 2.6ghz 200GB 7200RPM HDD and 4GB of RAM (thrid party of course). It should be blazing fast.
i wanted to like the mba, but without firewire (imovie??), without ethernet, with only one usb port, etc., i just can't justify it.
i will wait. i've been waiting for maybe a year. i'm using a 2003 TiBook, and it sucks. but i can't buy now, knowing well that there's a significant update on its way.
at a minimum penryn, at a maximum who knows (multitouch, case-redesign)...it's worth waiting, even if i delude myself for months.
it's just frustrating...
I was waiting, however, I will be ordering a MBP either tonight or tomorrow. the Macbook Air just doesn't offer enough for me.
I'm not getting one now, you'd be an idiot to do so. There is no chance in hell that apple won't update the mbps in the next month. currently they're not cutting edge as other microsoft based laptops have started including penryn which won't do apple any favours.
due to the release of an all new ground breaking laptop. apple would rather capitalise on sales of the air for 2 weeks before giving the mbp a quick refresh.
Just ordered a MBP 2.4 17" Hi-Def 160GB 7200 RPM 4GB RAM (3rd party) last night. Should have it by tomorrow or Monday at the latest.
just a quick question! Is it possible to buy a MBP now and return it, to receive an updated lap only at a 10% extra cost? If an update should arrive within weeks.

Nope. I decided not to invest in a non updated MBP. Instead I bought a Dell XPS M1530 Red Crimson which has same and better specs than the MBP.
But it costs 1.059,35
Weight: 2.62 kg.
Compared to the MBP 15 inch, which costs 2399,- u bet I save money now and come back when the MPB is updated!
I am not gonna spend a dirty 1400 euros + to have the privilege to run OSX. I think I ll dual boot with Ubuntu which appearently seems to run nice on it.
Now try say that Apple aint at least twice as expensive....
Nice machine, but no thanks: I'll take my MBP. I paid more, but I have superior specs and I like the MBP case over the Dell's.
No offense, but just my thoughts.
I respect MBP's very much but...
For a fact the XPS has superior specs. The only thing is the processor which is 2.4 on the MBP, but that will only differ 130 euros to make it likewise on the Dell. However the XPS 1530 has for example more memory, bigger harddisk and a cardreader...
And btw the MPB case looks is very outdated and old. The new Dell XPS M1530 however has a pretty modern and slick looking design.
Where I live, a souped-up XPS M1530 of my choice only costs about 900USD less than a similarly souped-up MBP, and that is at the lousy 1280x800 resolution (the big resolution models are not here yet) so the actual premium could be even less.
Well I am not here to promote Dell, but I Googled a bit on discount coupons and collected a 10% + 5% discount. And yes 1280x800 is not my choice either, however I do run 1280x1024 now on my main system with a dual 22 inch IIyama monitor setup. So I wonder if I can handle the 1440x900 specs I ordered on a 15.4 inch screen (u can also get a 1680x1050 which is not even possible for a MBP 15 inch).
