i'm certainly not disappointed in it at all. in fact it has exceeded my expectations.

does that mean there still aren't things that need improvement? no. but apple has clearly taken an Evolutionary approach to updates rather than try and invent the wheel at every turn. i think this will work in their favor as time goes on, consistency is what an 'average jane' user will want and look for.

I'm thrilled to bits to be honest, iCloud sounds fabulous, and it's all automatic! Anything Apple does that means I have to worry less about management stuff and more about just doing what I want/need is too awesome!

If you want file systems and being able to micromanage every little computing detail then Apple do not make the products for you.

Some people complain about everything. Those that don't like it are the same ones that would complain if they won a free car; "Oh it's black?"

Don't like it, don't use it. Sell it, and buy something that fits your needs better...

Wanted the look of it to change somehow. Tired of looking at the same old same old. Also was hoping for a better YouTube app, the current one is embarrassing compared to the YouTube on android.

Happy that the cord is finally cut though.

Seriously?

The preview looked great. Desktops rarely change. Youtube is fine. I watched youtube on a HTC Thunderbolt. Didn't see anything jaw dropping!

If you want different buy an Android. Have fun!

My biggest disappointment is that the amazing "iPad Experience" is being restricted to only Tablets. Lion seems to be trying to integrate the best things about iOS but and pushing the many uses of gestures on OSX but but we've already seen first hand that the quickest and simplest method for OS interaction is physically touching the screen.

Anyway, here's my plusses and minuses on iOS5

+ Screen sharing to AppleTV
+ Notifications. I had an android for a bit and this is the best way to do it
+ Wireless sync We have 4 devices so this makes my iOS life so much easier.

- iCloud doesn't sync game saves? (If I'm on level 90-1 on my iPad Angry Birds then I shouldnt be on 1-1 on the iPod Touch)
- No explanation on iTunes upgrades. They need to make a way to control storage locations automatically (audio local, video on external)
- What good is making taking pictures easier if the camera makes you not want to take pictures
- Fall release. I'm dying to get an iPhone on Sprint and it looks like I have to wait until Fall in order to find out if it's even going on other carriers.

Overall I'm very happy but I do want a hardware announcement. MBA update and Time Capsule need to be addressed.

Was fairly disappointing. Felt like a maintenance release than anything.

Notifications - should've been launched original iPhone like this. Hell, my oooooold winmo phone had better notification system. This update pretty much copies android straight up.

Facelift - didn't happen. With iPad's screen real estate, so much more couldve been done.

Cutting the cord - finally. No other device was so dependent on a cord, like idevice. I am still not sure why was I supposed to connect my iPad to an Internet connected computer before I could use it.

Cloud - great idea. Again, taking cues from other manufacturers. Google music services, amazon kindles ability to wirelessly sync bookmarks, googles app downloads, etc. The free part is great.

Lack of widgets, user file system, better printing, better push email is disappointing. Feels like with iOS 4 and iOS 5, apple is playing catch-up.

So if they do something right, they get no credit because it should have been there already and/or they copied it. If they do something wrong, you complain. That about sum it up?

Very let down.

It's a good update for some looking forward to Cloud and some nice features but no flash, proper camera features more for IPhone than IPad, no proper multi tasking, many asked why Twitter integration yet not Facebook?

Tabbed browsers is already out there as apps and so is instant messaging.

A real let down a chance to see off rivals but it won't. It's still limited, not revolutionary at all...enjoy the iPad as it is and come the update a very dull update won't change how I experience IPad.

Plus no new IPhone. I was looking forward today but half expected it to be small on the updates. I just got Apple products last year and I know how the people who went from IPhone 3G to 3Gs felt just small updates every year.

I now fear Android tablets will outclass the IPad in the next year.

You should be specific about your definition of "outclass."

I would not bet against Apple's continued dominance in tablets that easily. The main advantage in Apple's favor is price. The iPad remains the cheapest tablet on the market in its class (I'm not counting uber-cheap tablets like Archos). I foresee Apple cutting the price on the iPad to head off competition. That in itself changes a lot.

Another thing is apps. There are far more apps made for the iPad than there are for Honeycomb.

.

No it's not.
Don't get me wrong.
I really like my iPad 2, hate the UI.
It's specs are pretty pathetic too, hardware wise vs price.

Really crappy camera, front and back, to start.

There was no evidence of this. You're an MR Regular. There would have been rumours.
The lack of Flash was a real deal breaker for me.

People still expect Flash? SERIOUSLY?

Proper camera features more for iPhone than iPad: the iPad is not a camera.

What is 'proper' multi tasking?

Facebook was attempted with 4.0, then Jobs and Zuckerberg had a tiff.

True, but this was in some ways more of an iPhone update than it was an iPad one.

People seriously expected a new iPhone? SERIOUSLY?

Fear? Fear is good, because it means Apple will step their game up. Sort of.

There are hundreds of themes and icons packs available for jail broken iOS. That alone should tell them there is demand for customization of the home screen.

Actually, outside of tether, cosmetic items such as iconoclasm, infinidock, shrink and themes are all I really want out of jailbreak these days.

So if Stevie could just see fit to LET ME BE AN INDIVIDUAL and have some cosmetic customization ability, I would likely (eventually) get sick of the JB hastle and stay stock.

But until then...

I complain that os got very stale. People still have iPhones show them 74 degrees.

It can be better. Cloud is interesting, but other than that, it's a catch up release.

You see that worries me (i know its paranoia) that Apple is trying too hard to hide the computer from the user. Sure it makes it all pretty and magical but thats just it. Newer generations shouldn't be growing up thinking computers are magical, they should know at least about the filesystem structure and I even think every person should have a basic knowledge of a programming language. I feel like hiding the computer from people is making them less computer literate. A majority of my friends and family don't know even HTML or how the internet works and thats a scary thought to me. Computers shouldn't be "magic".

jack of all trades, master of none. it surely does help you appreciate something more i'll give you that. however, reverse evolution that'll thankfully not happen.

that said, i'm dissapointed in the aspect that they do not have a modernized "file system". right now, we'll have duplicate files whenever we use the "open in" feature to edit a file in various apps and as someone mentioned, its hardly elegant.

i wish apple would integrate something like when you want to load a photo in Pages, you can view the photoalbums on your device etc. do that with other apps as well. allow other apps to load any other documents or what not you have stored in the iDevice that are compatible to the app via a popover box (have a documents.app as well) and then allow for you to save back to that sandbox.

After using it for a while, it's a HUGE jump. HUGE.

If you're GENUINELY disappointed (and I don't mean an Android fanboy or some other silly label) then your expectations are severely unrealistic.

iOS5 on an iPad1 runs well and gives iOS the little things it really needed, especially compared to their competitors.

Majorly disappointed these are all the new features. Doesn't warrant the 5 title, 4.5 maybe. I expect INNOVATION from Apple basically at every keynote address.

I was expecting Nuance's voice recognition + Siri's AI + OSX mini Automator marriage, accompanied by a Bluetooth earpiece/mic accessory.

Imagine commanding an iPhone like in Star Trek. You hit a button on the Bluetooth earpiece and command your iOS device.

"Computer, look up wikipedia for ________."
One of nuance's voices tell you its completed the search, and an entry added in Notification Center. Basically you can keep adding commands and when its ready, it'll be in Notification Center.

So the next time take out your phone, you just slide on your commands in Notification Center and voila. Safari opens with the page you asked for, preloaded.

Really

I really wanted to see some kind of swype integration. I have used it on androids and it is awesome.

Proper camera features more for iPhone than iPad: the iPad is not a camera.
The iPad has a camera.
The iPad has 3rd party photo editing apps
The iPad has 1st party photo editing apps with iOS 5.

Im curious why you feel that the iPad ISN'T a camera?

People seriously expected a new iPhone? SERIOUSLY?
Whats wrong with that? Apple's iPhone announcements have been the MOST consistant thing for the last 5 years so why is it so shocking that people would have their fingers crossed that it would happen again?

Apple is always full of surprises and many times do the opposite of what they say so the hopes of carrier announcement or a mention of new hardware wasnt crazy.

Because it's a camera attached to a ten inch touch screen.

This is MacRumors. There would have been some kind of leak if a new iPhone were coming out today.

All of you that say you're disappointed are just crazy or looking for something to "beach" about...they only gave us 10/200 updates they've included, and I'd be willing to bet 90% of us here haven't even played with the dev preview...this was only an introduction to iOS, icloud, and lion...let it breathe a little before you denounce the incredibly gifted staff that Apple employs and depends on. Things can still change, and have plenty of time to...but as it sits now I'm still going to be a happy camper. It's posts like this that remind me why I've posted all of 2 times in the past 3 months...geez, either get a grip or put the same effort into telling Apple why you should be their newest developer.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

iOS 5:

New notifications > stolen from a JB app
Over the air sync > JB app
Dictionary pluging > JB app
Volume up to take a photo > JB app
Interactive homescreen > JB app

I could go on and on and on.

Nothing new, have had most of this on my iPhone for a year or more.

Was hoping for a proper tablet interface.

There could be more around the corner that they are holding back as selling points for the next iPhone model. (new voice commands?)

My impressions

The Good:

I really like what's coming in iOS 5. I expected notifications and cloud stuff. But was blown away by the "cutting the cord" and iMessage. Plenty of smaller touches to get excited about: camera button, reminders, tone store etc etc.

The free iCloud stuff is also really nice. Photos automatically syncing from my phone to my iPad= killer tweak.

iMessage is going to be huge for me. My entire family uses iOS 5 capable iPhones so I am going to love seamlessly setting down my iPhone and texting from my iPad.

Multitasking gestures finally hitting the prime time. This was a game changing addition to my iPad. With the smart cover+multitasking gestures my home button is getting dusty.

Split keyboard, that's cute.

Twitter integration, ehh.......it will be really awesome for some people but fairly useless for me. I am a follower, not a tweeter, and all the twitter goodies are for authoring tweets rather than consuming them. Would have much rather had deep Facebook integration.

The Bad (but really not that bad):

I wish we would see apple leverage Siri. Give us some "Wow" functions

I would have liked to see more widget options and perhaps a different implementation. I feel like the swipe to right of home screen (spotlight search) is a bit of a waste. Great place to put some widgets. Perhaps they would be a power drain?

I would have liked to see Apple overhaul the iPad UI just a bit. It's such a large screen. There is soo much space there on the home screen.

Would have liked to see better multitasking support for chat applications.

Summary: pretty happy :)

So everything you've listed is "greater than" a jailbreak app?...I agree!

Perhaps, but only because I don't have to jailbreak it and muck around with it ;).

Also iMessage is pretty much the same as whatsapp, but then only for iOS and not also for Android.
