Fairly happy with everything announced. Was hoping on widgets, better voice commands and an upgraded maps app. I guess only other thing is we have to wait until the fall, usually we get the major update to ios in june.

...

Cloud - great idea. Again, taking cues from other manufacturers. Google music services, amazon kindles ability to wirelessly sync bookmarks, googles app downloads, etc.

Yes, Apple witnessed what Amazon and Google did a couple of weeks ago and just slapped something together for the keynote today. Nice catch.

The free part is great.

Well, sure, all Android users love free, that's why there are no good Android apps. :)

the echo chamber

Well that's the problem with all the rumour sites that chase the same small snippets of rumours, and people (including some of the sites themselves) that present a rumour as 'news' if its heard enough times. You end up being disappointed with Apple for not including a feature you heard lots of rumours about, which doesn't make sense when it was never promised in the first place.

Apple tend to keep things quiet and the only features you know about are the ones you see. And people complain. Microsoft tend to make lots of promises, public betas, whatever then cut features if they have to and people complain about that. And people complain.

I can only conclude that the problem isn't either company and their approach to publicity for new products, its the people. If you complain about things that you were never promised then you're just an ungrateful jerk, imho.

To sum up the IOS5 updates, in two words, i would say "Window Dressing"

All this stuff is window dressing and doesn't introduce anything new or doesnt address any of the weaknesses of IOS. Apple is playing catch up and still refuses to open up their model in any way and I predict this is going to kill them long term.

Notifications have finally caught up to Android, and Wifi Sync will be handy.. but will only really save me from plugging the thing into my PC.. I don't use twitter and I actually despise it yet there is forced integration in the new IOS.. for cloud, ok great, but i can just sync to itunes when i'm at home and I only use an Ipad, not an iphone itouch all at the same time (why would you thank god for my android phone being OPEN), finally they've made use of that massive amount of empty space on the lockscreen. The split keyboard is nice so .. right.. how does this change anything, again

Newspapers - I have Zinio and several subscriptions, did I just get stuck using some outdated app for another 1 year at least until subscriptions expire? Ok apple built it into the OS... great..

We still do not have
+ Central file system, DR Laden BS, no mountable storage for easy access to the hardware we paid for, this removes significant amounts of utility to please App Developers and Music/Movie industry players.
+ Flash plugins (This is going to get old at some point, new SoCs can destroy Flash easily.. and Apple will run out of excuses at some point and be forced to admit its a purely commercial reason they are excluding flash, having nothing to do with performance or battery drain). I know several people who felt duped (They dont read about tech and have other things to worry about) after buying the ipad and realizing many of the sites they visit don't work because of missing flash.
+ File attachements in Safari / Mail, Still full of Fail (Can't upload files from safari to web pages or forums = fail) at LEAST have apple apps hold the ability to share files among each other or save files in a central file system for only system apps, ANYTHING to help this
+ Real multitasking - pathetic

I knew the weaknesses buying the ipad, which is why i have a real computer (android samung galaxy S II) as my phone. So I am not short a useful tool because I can always pull my phone out and use the ipad for app store apps, and e-reading and movies.

However I am dissapointed and I predict this is the beginning of the end for Apple. Long term, maybe not next year or the year after but within 5 years this model will kill them, again.

You see that worries me (i know its paranoia) that Apple is trying too hard to hide the computer from the user. Sure it makes it all pretty and magical but thats just it. Newer generations shouldn't be growing up thinking computers are magical, they should know at least about the filesystem structure and I even think every person should have a basic knowledge of a programming language. I feel like hiding the computer from people is making them less computer literate. A majority of my friends and family don't know even HTML or how the internet works and thats a scary thought to me. Computers shouldn't be "magic".

What utter tosh. How many people know how a car works, for example? Should you have to know the principles of the engine (whether traditional or electric) to drive one? No, you need to know what consumable goes in which hole and how to operate the machine, that's it.

There's NO reason that the vast majority of people should have to learn how a computer works in order to use it. These devices have progressed to the point where they really should be just tools, the software more-or-less getting out of the way and letting the user get on with whatever it is they wish to do. The only ones saying otherwise when it comes to general users are geeks who like showing off how superior they are to everyone else.

Now there are cases where things like file system access are absolutely required and of course that functionality should remain. But the concept that the average user should have to be computer literate is outdated and belongs to a different decade (at least the 90's if not earlier).

Very let down.

It's a good update for some looking forward to Cloud and some nice features but no flash, proper camera features more for IPhone than IPad, no proper multi tasking, many asked why Twitter integration yet not Facebook?

Tabbed browsers is already out there as apps and so is instant messaging.

A real let down a chance to see off rivals but it won't. It's still limited, not revolutionary at all...enjoy the iPad as it is and come the update a very dull update won't change how I experience IPad.

Plus no new IPhone. I was looking forward today but half expected it to be small on the updates. I just got Apple products last year and I know how the people who went from IPhone 3G to 3Gs felt just small updates every year.

I now fear Android tablets will outclass the IPad in the next year.

Can I just ask what it is that you'd want in "proper multi tasking"?

I'm ready to stand corrected, but since iOS 4 came out I've literally not come across _any_ situation where iOS's implementation of multitasking isn't sufficient.

And in the last 12 months I've "fixed" 3 Android phone for people who've downloaded an app that's in the background making the phone run slow and running the battery down. I genuinely think Apple have multitasking spot-on for a device with limited battery life.

I do agree about Flash though. Much as I see its flaws and it makes my Macbook run like a dog, but I use my machine to watch streamed TV shows which are of a, ahem, less than official nature and these sort of sites rarely offer alternative formats and I don't see that changing in the near future.

I don't think I'd need Flash on my iPhone but it'sthe one thing that would stop me getting an iPad to replace a regular laptop.

Split keyboard, that's cute.

I have been hoping in vain for the landscape keyboard to have a 10 key keypad.

All that wasted space without dircet access to umbers keys? Meh.

And the portrait keyboard should have 5 rows (top row a number row). So e small ability to select alternate keyboards doesn't seem too much to ask?

ICloud. Finally. But I was hoping for a time capsule overhaul that would allowi to be a direct itunes server fo aTV, etc,

Newspapers - I have Zinio and several subscriptions, did I just get stuck using some outdated app for another 1 year at least until subscriptions expire? Ok apple built it into the OS... great..

It was outdated as soon as it was released. Next time don't buy into a PDF store as a digital reading solution.

All calls to update the OS because it bores you will easily be ignored by Apple. They obviously understand the point of an operating system, which doesn't overlap with the point of a video game.

What on earth are you doing on your iPad? It's not like you are running Excel on it or anything actually productive. Or are you?

And the portrait keyboard should have 5 rows (top row a number row). So e small ability to select alternate keyboards doesn't seem too much to ask?

I think the keyboard takes up enough space already?

ICloud. Finally. But I was hoping for a time capsule overhaul that would allowi to be a direct itunes server fo aTV, etc,

But this was known to be a software event. You were hoping for hardware annoucements at the software event?

As an Apple user I'm happy to suffer the pain in view of the greater cause - expunging the internet of crappy Flash. One day in the future, all internet users will be grateful for our sacrifice.

The three things I wish they would have announced as well.

1. A SPAM filter that syncs against the one on my Mac.

2. Game saves that sync between my iPhone and iPad, and aren't lost if I set up an iGadget as a new device.

3. Numbers visible on the regular keyboard; typing in a long password is annoying as hell.

To sum up the IOS5 updates, in two words, i would say "Window Dressing"

Yes I agree good description.

I can't understand why there's so many happy people about this update there's so much thus update DID NOT bring it will hold Apple back.

I don't think it will finish then off but expect other tablets to gather a bigger share as there is people who want those extra features. I will stick to IPad I like the OS and speed and design. But agree it still have a PC and won't get rid of it anytime soon.

I think the flash issue they are holding off and hope goes away and HTML5 video takes over. Wiglets I'm not keen on they seem more suited to Android devices. Bluetooth to any device should have been a must feature, I was hoping Garage Band for IPhone would come and I was wanting better camera features. A messenger service was long over due but I fear it's too late as BBM has taken over and there's a few apps that have offered that for some time now. Safari wise I'd have liked the option to change the colour of the browser like some alternative browsers. I'd have liked the settings menu to have been more accessible in smaller box. Desktop wise on the IPad I'd have liked a digital clock feature to be put on the bottom. I'd have liked a better YouTube app and Facebook intergation. Safari needs more features found on alternative browsers too still quite limited. The keyboard thing I don't like the split I'd have liked one you could pinch to size or pushed down a bit to see more of the webpage. I don't think the new IOS does this.

But yes so much is missing.

After using it for a while, it's a HUGE jump. HUGE.

If you're GENUINELY disappointed (and I don't mean an Android fanboy or some other silly label) then your expectations are severely unrealistic.

iOS5 on an iPad1 runs well and gives iOS the little things it really needed, especially compared to their competitors.

Why would expecting an update to a severly outdated UI be severely unrealistic?
And then label those who have used, or still use and have been well exposed to Android, get labeled Androd fanboys.

But you're right about one thing. IOS gives you LITTLE things it needed.
Like deep integration of a complete time waisting thing called twitter.
Sinking that much time and effort into such a POS is a bit of an insult really.

Compared to it's competitors, they're still losing ground.
It's not the UI or device itself that has made it popular, but the third party apps. And when developers start to turn to android, because of Apples dictatorial rules, then these won't be much reason to hang around.

The UI still sucks, and the tech specs are underwhelming.

And I own a 64gig iPad 2, so as an apple user i have a right to criticize.

You sir are the fanboy.

You predict the beginning of the end for Apple ?... Wow Remember me to never ever ask you for advice or predictions (are you in league with that christian guy who predicted the end of the world the other week ??)

Go back playing with your wounderfull open Android phone because it has Flash (Jezus Marie Joseph, grime a break with flash).

Heres a fun fact for you, the world does not revolve around YOU. Some people actually like the upgrades for iOS5.

I'm quite interested in the "Mirror iPad 2 to television wirelessly" bit of news. Does that mean stream the whole interface including apps?

Yes, and it is awesome.

Everyone always seems to complain about changing the look. If there is one thing that I would change about the homescreen in iOS it would be support for live icons.

Not every app would need them, but for Apps like weather it would be great. Actually, I just wish the weather icon would update to the current weather conditions and I would be good :D

Actually yes, I think people should have a rutamentary knowledge of how everything they use works be it even that combustion occurs in the engine and drives pistons or that electric currents are being manipulated by transistors in cpus.

Disagree. Your understanding of "engine" for example is increasingly (if slowly) becoming out moded. Does that mean you shouldn't drive a car?

I'm starting to come around to Apple's way of thinking. I'd be hard pressed to find any reason to have a file system other than it being nice to see all my files together in one place. I mean there are already file systems in iOS, you want to see your picture files go to the pictures app, you want to see your documents go to pages, pdfs goodreader, etc etc. I'd ask the question why in particular do you need a central file system? If the OS runs well and doesn't need any tweaking from the user, if you can easily find whatever file you are trying to open, and if with today's announcement they are making your files ubiquitous in that they will be automatically synced with all of your devices, well with these things I'm starting to see why there isn't a need for a central file system anymore.

I've fought against the death of the file system, but I think with icloud Apple is going to convince a lot of users. I'm starting to see these things as appliances such as a TV, you don't have a central file system on a TV, but you can still access what you need whether it's a menu, or a netflix movie.

You know I've been thinking about this file system thing today and I've realized I've already been doing a paradigm shift and not even realizing it. The old way is to access a central file system and find the file you are looking for. The new way is to open the application that handles the particular file you are going to use and then access the file from there. They really are not that different as they seem, it's more of numerous file systems tied to apps than a central file system tied to nothing, although on a computer your files are tied to "something" that is they are tied to whatever program you have set to open them. Really iOS is just reversing that where if you want to edit a picture your first move would be to open the pictures app and not the picture itself.

I've really scoured my brain and cannot fathom a situation where I would need to access a central file system. I think some of us will miss accessing and tweaking registry files, system files, stuff like that, but if there is no need to do that then there is no need to see those files. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I went from being a hard core tinkerer with WM to just being happy that everything works out of the box with iOS. I'd still LOVE to tinker with things like my desktop, icons, and other visual stuff like that, but I suppose it becomes less and less important to me.

Here's a reason: "Hey would you please send me all the files on project XYZ?"

Inevitably, project XYZ has some word files, spreadsheets, a PDF or two, maybe some photos, etc. etc. etc. Setting aside for the moment iOS inability to do proper mail attachments (you know, from within mail), you can't do to this if all your files are scattered in different, app focused boxes.

A centralized file system allows you to not only store, but access and share information as we generally conceive of it, which is clustered around ideas rather than computer applications.

Of all the things we only know a little bit about at this point, I am most interested in learning about the Documents app in iCloud. What is it? What can it or can't it do? If it's a single app that all other apps work with, then there is some hope.

Look at the storage system in the latest iwork apps. There are now folders. Will all apps now see the same folders in Documents? Or only their own folders? Hmmm...

I agree basic computer skills such as writing basic code and filesystems should be taught in high school or college as a required class not just word and powerpoint. After that people will know how the "magic" works and we wouldnt have the MacDefender issue or nearly as many phishing problems etc. I know people who still run IE6 because they think a virus wont go after an older computer etc.

haha ok dude

Yes, I predict that at some point these agreements apple has made with music/movie industry will limit the platform and come back to bite them.

Everyone's entitled to their own predictions and FYI: There have been several times when i have had to load the same site on my Android because my Ipad can't display it correctly.

So keep praying to Jezus for me that we will get a break!

I have never, anywhere I've worked, encountered or encouraged this kind of workflow.
1) People rarely need 'all' the files for a project - they need something actionable, so you either give them the info or the specific file
2) Files shared across people should be centrally-located; like a network or a reasonably-secure web interface, so you would never have to round them up and e-mail them. This would cause a mess with keeping track of revisions and iterations of files and could spiral out of control quickly
4) If a project requires multiple formats stored across locations, I don't see how such a project would be handled on an iPad to begin with. The solution isn't putting a traditional filesystem on an iPad (and the huge negative externalities that go with it), but by streamlining workspace interfaces - which you rightly speculate on at the end of your post.

As for iOS 5, it's insane, it's incorporated things people have been clamoring for (notifications and PC free are only two of the big ones), and coupled with iCloud can really make using Apple devices even better.

Complaints that they've just ripped off the competition are stupid (the competition that hopped on the tablet bandwagon that Apple started?), there's only so many ways to do notification handling. Complaints that this stuff should have been in iOS 4 or earlier are stupid because there's no way to satisfy that criterion. As for complaints that the UI hasn't been changed - there's no point to change interaction design arbitrarily, I have no idea what's wrong with the interface. If 'UI' means the look of it, who puts that kind of importance on the colours or animations or whatever - it's just a novelty effect that disappears quickly.

Wanted the look of it to change somehow. Tired of looking at the same old same old. Also was hoping for a better YouTube app, the current one is embarrassing compared to the YouTube on android.

Happy that the cord is finally cut though.

-28 on your orginal post!

You sound like a guy who enjoys change. Unfortunatly you won't get that on iOS as its more about perfecting what you've got not change it willy nilly.

Android sounds perfect for you or you could jailbreak. I assume you won't be happy either way.

, I have no idea what's wrong with the interface. If 'UI' means the look of it, who puts that kind of importance on the colours or animations or whatever - it's just a novelty effect that disappears quickly.

Really?
No idea?
How about not having 200 icons puked on your desktop.
Would you accept that on your computer? Every app dumped on your desktop for you to scroll through pages of desktops to find he app you need?

Widgets are not a novelty.
You obviousy have no real world experience with them.
Being able to lift the smart cover, and see in an instant my daily calendar, todo list, incoming messages, without having to do anything, not even touch the screen, is in fact a big deal.

And that's just a few small examples.

So stop making excuses for something that is severely lacking.

I know the minute widgets are integrated in the official iOS, the fanboys will suddenly proclaim what a genius idea it is, and how wonderful they are .
That's modus operandi for them.

Try uploading a picture to this forum using your iPad.
Good luck with that.

I'm disappointed that there isn't deeper Twitter integration.
iOS 5: we have to go deeper
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

iOS 5:

New notifications > stolen from a JB app
Over the air sync > JB app
Dictionary pluging > JB app
Volume up to take a photo > JB app
Interactive homescreen > JB app

I could go on and on and on.

Nothing new, have had most of this on my iPhone for a year or more.

Was hoping for a proper tablet interface.

So everything you've listed is "greater than" a jailbreak app?...I agree!
You knew what he meant. That being said, I would LOVE to hear what a 'proper tablet interface' is. People keep mentioning all these features they want/believe are lacking, but never elaborate on the changes they want to see.

1. Use Gmail
2. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of setting it up as a new device?
3. True.

I have been using Android device for over 1 year now and recently I started using iOS on iPad 2. I was actually very tense about iOS as it does not have flash and it's closed source and no USB and stuff like that, which you can ask any android fan and he will give u a list of it. Anyway, I'm not a fan of anyone but myself. Android has an edge for sure by having few more features and being open source it always helps everybody. But Android is not like iOS and by that I mean, when you say iOS.. It's flawless. It's smooth and rich UI makes a thing lot easier. Then you have ways to capitalize on USB, flash and stuff. The point it, it does not lag at all. Now I know, this may sound like whatever still Android has more features but hold on, what you going to do with it if it lags 20% of the time. And face it guys, Android gets really hard on you when you get hard on it, heavy storage just kills the fun. It lags even more after that. This thing doesn't end. Don't tell me my Android phone does not lag, I know it does and its annoying.

Coming back to iOS 5, I think they got lot of things which were needed and am very glad that now I can use my iPad 2 the way I expect it to be.

Both Android and iOS are good. Both needs to work together and build the best OS for mobile and tablets. My advice to both, please get me an end task as I don't want to load my RAM and think about advancing the browsers like how we got on Windows and OS X. Full fledge browser supporting java and flash and everything it's got.

Really?
No idea?
How about not having 200 icons puked on your desktop.
Would you accept that on your computer? Every app dumped on your desktop for you to scroll through pages of desktops to find he app you need?

Yes, I totally plan to get Lion. What's a better way to present your applications, the running of which being the entire point of engaging with my computer? What's the argument for retaining the old giant waste of space desktop model?

Widgets are not a novelty.
You obviousy have no real world experience with them.
Being able to lift the smart cover, and see in an instant my daily calendar, todo list, incoming messages, without having to do anything, not even touch the screen, is in fact a big deal.

 Lockscreen notifications are one of the premier features touted about being introduced to iOS...

I will say that my sense of self is on shaky ground without an ability to make the color of my browser different from other people's.
