Better than what is the real question in my mind.

You built all those machines??? Damn dude, you're a mod-gawd!

Awesome stuff!

LOL... I wish. :D

My point was that the Mac Pro has the best internal layout in terms of being clean and devoid of unnecessary cables running here and there amongst the internals which only impedes airflow and cooling, requiring more powerful and noisy fans to achieve a given level of cooling.

OIC... Yeah, the MP is pretty damn clean!

Why buy a mac? So then you can run any os you chose when you need to. I need or want both OS X and Windows. With a Mac I got it.

From my overall experience Macintosh computers just work. They do what I want, when I want and with very few issues if any.

It really comes down to personal preference. If you can afford a Mac and prefer it to a Windows machine then go for it. Otherwise enjoy yourself with a Windows box. Simple as that.

For a first Mac, is it better to get a MBP or MP?

I do not need it for business, as I am currently unemployed.
That is why I looked at HP, because of the cost.
However, I am thinking of dipping into my savings as a computer is a long term investment for me and I really like OSX.

I like the LED screen on the MBP, with the MP, I would have to spend under 300 dollars for a monitor.

Thanks

Does your computer need to move?

No, at home use.
I guess it would be nice to sit on the couch and read email.
But I guess the MP would give me more for the money.

I forgot to add, it would be an entry Quad at 2499.00

I think you will be happy with MBP. But for gaming, there really is no substitute for MP in Apple line up.

But you will get what you get and what you want. No point in asking mac enthusiasts on what to get.
People that put down Macs are people that can't afford them and have been brainwashed by others, or have owned a cheap model that broke down. If Mac quality went down, many users will point this out clearly as Mac enthusiasts are the hardest on Apple products.

Side note:
Why do people actually need Blu-Ray players built in to a computer? (not burners, I am sure people that can afford those do need them)

Why not by a standalone unit that attaches to your TV (I am not aware of any software that comes on Blu-Ray disc)?

I thought Blu-Ray was important for my PC because I do not have a HD TV yet. I do some gaming, so maybe I should look into the MP.

You are right that in the end we buy what we want, but it is nice to read opinions on how others chose.

Thanks

What exactly do you use your computer for? This could help us suggest which would be best for you.

I consider the Mac to be a long term investment as well. My previous Mac was a 2002 Quicksilver which still runs great. I spent the same amount of money on that computer as I did on my new Mac Pro and used it for a solid 7 years. I intend to use this new Mac for just as long or longer.

Personally I do not own a TV anymore. I only use my computers. I really can't believe Apple has not jumped on the Blu-Ray wagon yet. Since the release of Blu-Rays I can not stand to watch DVD movies. I got a cheapo Blu-Ray player for my PC and watch movies on there.

Also, the internal Blu-Ray player for the PC is wayyyy cheaper than a stand alone player that is used with a TV.

well, I just want to say. I had in this 8-9 years using Windows XP etc. always problems on a windows machine (also hardware). And I never had problems with my macintosh since I have one since 3 years... I know many people say here, mac isn't any better cause it has the same hardware in the end that doesn't even work better blablabla and other things. I'm just happy with the apple products I bought and I continue this cause I never had here bad experiences.. So that's it for me. And second,I realized AFTER buying a mac: It's a lot of fun working with it cause it looks great too and for me It is a important that I have a nice workplace :)

So I would say if you need much power , buy a Mac Pro.
If you only do a little photoshop, Mails etc., buy a iMac or even mac mini.
Or just buy what you want and can afford.

Well; for fifty bucks over-budget, you should consider the Dell 2209WA; I know, the economy is rough, but if you have a machine that the MacPro is replacing, you should sell it or summat... Use the funds to also get AppleCare, if you can.

.....

My anti-virus works fine and is hardly noticeable. With Windows, at least I have the option to search for drivers on the Internet....

Just the thought of searching for drivers makes me SOOO excited...give me a break.

I am not finding the Dell 2209WA on dell's site.
I wanted at least a 23" or 24" monitor.

Thanks

I'm sorry, I saw this thread and I just had to post in it with all the idiots in it.

Okay, first of all.

Only morons or little kids get viruses on their computer. Seriously. Even if your a moron, Windows Security updates, combined with an anti-virus and mozilla firefox have caused even my 6 year old sister to NEVER get a virus. Before when I didn't have an anti-virus, I only got a virus ONCE at the age of 8. You know what I did? I did system Restore, and my computer was fine. Stop calling it a LOL VIRUS MAGNENT!! If you are a mac fanboy simply because you didn't know how to remove viruses, fine then, that's okay. But don't go going around saying "HUR DUR WINDOWS HAVE VIRUSES ROFL!!!!." Macs are for people who don't know how to use computers well.

Secondly, Macs are overpriced, period. The Mac Pro is also useless, because I assume you want to use it to host servers, because the processor can't be used to play any games, not to mention the graphics card sucks. And, folks, please don't use any Windows or Mac OS's to host a server. Any decent server admin would use linux.

Thirdly, your OS isn't revolutionary. At all. It runs on a UNIX system. That's why it's more stable, because it runs slower then Windows. Apple computers couldn't even multitask until they hybrid'd someone else's OS, which is Unix.

"So what ARE Macs good for then, Belleraphone?"
Macs themselves are over priced, like I said, I can find a more powerful one for a cheaper price. But the OS X.....

The OS X's main advantages would be "multimedia" kind of things, since Windows is better at Work and Play, OS X is also better in security, but only because not as many people are writing viruses for Macs. (Google Mac Virus.) OS X DOES crash less then Windwos Vista, but Vista runs faster then OS X, (Assuming both computers have equal specs.) Windows 7 doesn't crash at all, I've been using the BETA of it for about 6 months, the only time it crashed was when I tried to code a program, and it was resolved in under 15 seconds. I didn't have to restart my computer or anything.

Overall, in terms of the OS, it's really a matter of opinion. OS X is for less tech-savvy people. You can also install OS X on a PC, just sayin'.

If you buy a mac because it's "thin" and "Sleek." HP also make thin, powerful laptops. That's all I have to say.

Great, let's just call all of the poor victims names, blame the victim. Fact is that Windows is very late in getting around to security with constant new threats.

The Mac Pro is not useless. There are many thousands of us who use it professionally for graphic arts, video, audio, etc. It is not intended to be server, you are off the mark in that regard.

Just because it is not the best gaming machine available does not affect me in the least.

Unix is cool, OSX, Linux, whatever. Whats your point. Windows sure ain't Unix.

IMO Apple provides a good solid value for the money. No muss, no fuss, it just works.

Listen Alex,

I am sorry you saw this post too. Ignorant comment like this clearly points out that you know nothing about computers or you believe that your limited knowledge on products out there makes you think you are an expert.

There are companies getting attacked by viruses too as they are big targets. "only morons and kids get viruses" is just another ignorant comment.

I am not even sure where to begin correcting your statement. All I have to say is that you need to pay someone to teach you some stuff. Whatever you are doing......isn't working.

I don't even know why you bothered to join today. Go continue to infect WoW community with your ignorance.

I wonder what Belleraphone's face looks like? I mean, it must be beaten and scared right? Certainly he's the type of bold, truth-telling, righteous individual that would just walk into any room and call almost everyone in it an idiot and a moron. Right? So I assume he gets knocked about a bit. No?

:D

Give him a break

Give him a break. He's obviously just a kid who has lot to learn about how to interact with people, make a convincing argument & clearly convey his point in a manner that other people will actually listen to, and about computers themselves, how people use them and why they make the choices of OS or manufacturer they do.
BTW, this is the first time I've ever waded in to any sort of ridiculous thread like this. I don't mean the whole thread is ridiculous necessarily, only the appearance of Belleraphone.
There are more weird outbursts and flame wars on mac rumors forums than any other forum I've ever used, which range across many subjects, although this is the only computer forum I've ever used.
The only thing maybe close to this I've joined in before was something to do with when Sly Stone appeared at the grammies... there were flame wars then, and threats of legal action etc.
