Well, I think that's a tad harsh - especially in a thread like this. I meant no harm to them. Also I've never been interested in the 500 post thing. The MR hierarchy is about the only thing I don't like about this board.

Yea, but you get that at any board you go to. Doesn't matter if post counts are shown or not or if there even levels.

i know this rep system from a number of other forums where i'm a member (sports, science and tech related).

I don't like it at all because it gets abused a lot.

when you look at the rep's of certain members you see immediately that they got "rated up" by their friends (9.9 come on who gets that right from the start) and other good members got downrated. probably somebody needed to "pay back" for some older discussions.

they should get rid of it.

I recall the same issue at a forum that I was an admin of for a while until we decided to shut it down. We had a rep hack installed, and it just got abused horribly.

There's a psychological experiment that does this same type of thing. It creates an arbitrary division between groups of subjects, props one group higher than the other and watches as they tear each other apart because of this "class" division (which only really exists in their own minds).

Notice it took all of two pages for someone with a low score to complain about the scoring system being unfair, then someone with a high rating tells them off.

I'm so confused... So it's just another day for me :p
People who have monetarily contributed to MacRumors are afforded certain special privileges, like access to private forums and the option of having a special title like "Demi-God(dess)" or "Contributor". They also occasionally engage in little games like this to remind the rest of us of their superiority (sic).

Pretend that you're back in junior high school and it will make a lot more sense.

Stop pretending! It's life! This sort of s*** happens all the time.

yawn, the new demi game is being a stealth and putting a reputation on the bottom of your avatar.
Except not all demis w/ reps are stealth.

I'm awaiting a mod's PM... I wonder if it's to do w/ how many of your posts have been edited or modified by a mod.

...life isn't fair....
You (not you specifically, but as a group) obviously did something wrong to get low reputations
Self-contradictory. If life isn't fair, you can get a low rep without doing anything wrong.

Frankly, I think the idea of "reps" is dumb. What, do we have the popular kids and the unpopular kids now? That is so high school.

And damn, just like high school i'm unpopular ;-p. Times two, since I'm not even hip enough to have rep.

I also wonder if it has something to do with how many times you have renewed the paid subscription to Macrumors ?

However I am only on my 2nd round, and didn't over pay, so I don't know why I have a higher rep as opposed to someone that has been a contributor longer ?

Ok, on this reputation thing, I deleted my Avatar to see if I could get rid of my unwanted reputation, however now that I have done that, the Reputation (once part of my Avatar) remains!

It is still an image, however I have selected to NOT use an avatar, and I have no way to remove it in my user CP ! The image file is titled NoAvatar 4.3.gif. I am not able to find anything about this image on Google or on vBulletin's site! This must be something that is being done by the forum software, and I have no control over it.

What I don't get however, after I did this change my reputation went up from a 4.2 to a 4.3 !?!?!? Is this some kind of warning level, meaning that the higher number is worse ?

It doesn't take as long as you think. But there is some suspense when you get close and you just want to reach 500.

Hehee.. It took me 3 years, 3 months (ish) to get to 500 posts... but then the Evil Master of Time-Suckage, Forum Spy appeared :D

As for these reputation numbers, I can't help but think they're a bad idea. I've been browsing with images disabled for a few days (I do most of my MacRumoring from work, and I've been trying to keep bandwidth usage down) so hadn't seen the new reputation thing. Seems a bit random, but is it really worth getting annoyed about? I mean, surely people who read posts judge them by the content of he message not some apparently arbitrary 'score'?

*shrug*... but I suppose I could just be saying that because I apparently have a low rep :D

On the next episode of "As The MacRumors Turns" we learn that this is all a secret plot to rip us all apart.:p
