Nobody is forcing these people to buy it this way. If you want one then get them when they are available.
Of course. However, even if people don't buy from the scalpers, they are being inconvenienced by the scalpers in that they are being forced to wait a bit longer. It doesn't matter whether the product is critical or not, arguing about that is an effort to justify this behavior and get around the fact that the scalpers have negatively impacted others.

And I'm not being inconvenienced by any of my efforts? Research. Timing. Out of pocket cost. And risk.
If somebody wants something show a little effort and get it before you have to resort in other methods.

Sure, you're being inconvenienced, but what are you providing to the people buying from you?

A manufacturer is inconvenienced because they have to front the cost for materials and labor to build the product.

A retailer is inconvenienced because they have to build a supply chain and create some sort of space where customers can view and buy the products.

What value have you added to the process? You went to the store (in this case, the website) and went through the exact same process that any other customer could have. You want to sell on eBay, or Craigslist? With the exception of international buyers living in countries where the iPad has not yet been made available, anyone who would buy from you could have done exactly what you did.

You're trying to say that you were so inconvenienced that you deserve to make a profit, but you haven't actually created anything. The only thing that scalpers create (or attempt to create) is scarcity. That is their product; it is what enables them to dictate the price and make a profit. Nobody likes scarcity, so why are you surprised that you're receiving a negative response?

Considering it was a weird launch. They didn't give a date just "later in November" when every launch since has been given an exact date in advance, I'm sure a lot of people who aren't up to date on tech news don't know it's released yet. Asked two of my friends if they picked one up and both said "it's out?"

Why I haven't gotten one yet is that I can't afford one as of now haha. Being financially responsible and will eventually get on probably first quarter next year. Or when the referbs make it to the app store. Whichever comes first.

Of course, there is always the possibility that Apple marketing was accurate on their forecast for this one and just made enough of them . . .

Did the same thing, ordered a 16gb space gray for resale. Was going to return it next week since they didn't sell out but since I have till January 7 Ill just hold onto it and see what happens. I also bought a bunch of 1st gen iPads on ebay and traded them into target, the target mobile guy said he was trying to do the exact same thing but couldn't find a large lot. I preordered 2 PS4 and 2 Xbox Ones.

Be careful you might be deemed a "worthless" individual by many forum members here

The tone I get from the OP is that he's angry that now that he's got his, he's upset that Apple hasn't sold out so he can peddle his wares at increased prices for a tidy profit.

I don't see a problem. I guess they under promised "Later November" and most everyone assumed it would be after the 15th at least.

Reading comprehension. :)

If you recall their website said "Later in Novermber" not "in late November."

Why would I be angry? I have until January 7th to return it... No sweat off my back if stock stays high...

I'll bet you if Apple had sold out if every single iPad launch weekend they would have issued a press release regarding sales so please don't say Apple was never going to announce. If it benefitted Apple they'd have said something. But from the already price slashing sales are probably on the average side right now, somewhere between OK & meh.

No, they probably wouldn't have said anything. They don't break out sales within product categories, ever. They don't break out sales by iPhone model (4s, 5c, 5s) and never have, and since the mini launched they have never broken out sales separately. Announcing that "we sold X million" iPad Air on launch weekend would give analysts and competitors a bit more information about Apple's sales mix than they apparently want to give.

It isn't unique to Apple. Samsung breaks out even less information than Apple, and doesn't announce total unit sales except some occasional cherry picked data.

Fair enough... But now Apple has no excuse with the Mini out. I can't remember Apple not announcing iPad sales early on after launch.

because i bought an extra one for resale for christmas...

double thinking it now.

And please nobody tell me how it isn't moral blah blah blah...

If you don't want to hear that scalping is immoral, why do you post here? It's immoral. Scalpers are leeches. They are parasites. They should be publicly flogged. I suppose you didn't want to hear that, did you?

I sincerely hope that just when you want to return that iPad someone runs into you and smashes your iPad. That would be the kind of inconveniencing that a scalper deserves.

It has been out all of 3 days, and not yet on a weekend. I actually doubt they will say anything now since a mid-week essentially online-only launch suggests that they are managing demand to fit supply. If they had unconstrained supplies of both on sale at launch they might have made an announcement, but the low-key launch indicates to me that sales are limited by supply and it isn't in Apple's interest to publicize what might be lower absolute sales of the mini. They might not have had enough to handle a big weekend rush, and I think Apple is beyond the point where they want or need huge lines around the block for the iPad. I'm sure the situation with the Air is better since the screen was easier to produce.

To the OP's question, many models are actually "sold out" at stores. With 4 carriers and 4 sizes, and wi-fi vs. cellular, there are essentiallly 32 different models. Just because a store happens to have a handful of 1-2, or even 5-6 configurations doesn't mean it isn't selling well or that demand isn't what Apple expected.
