I can't speak for anyone else, but I think what is really bothering me is that I really am wanting to get a new multi-core phone... but if the new iPhone is just a spec bump and nothing else, I will be very hesitant to buy knowing that the next iPhone which could come as soon as 6 months later, will be the redesign, with the bigger screen and new profile and all of the other features I want, maybe even A6, AND may even feature LTE.

I can forgive not having LTE... That's a feature I can live without, but I don't want to drop a bunch of cash and burn my upgrade for the same basic phone to have the redesign I want come out 6 months later.

Here is something else I wanted to point out. I think whether the next the iPhone is either a 4S or a 5, its going to be generally a great phone and not suck. I wouldn't recommend holding out on this upcoming model because it doesn't have the features you want but you know the next one probably will. The next iPhone is always going to be better than the last and you could end up waiting forever. But to each there own...

I noticed a trend recently in the forums. A lot of people seem like they would be really pissed if there is no redesigned iPhone 5 announced at the media event. My question is why? A new iPhone is a new iPhone. I would understand if no new iPhone was announced AT ALL. But whats wrong with a 4S? I thought the iPhone 4 was great. The iPhone 4S is simply a better version of an already great phone. Seriously whats with some of these people saying they are going to go to Android or something if there is no iPhone 5? Relax!

I think many people have become spoiled with Apple's innovation. Everyone expects a "life-changer" at every keynote event. When it's not a "life-changer" and just another solid product update, people get pissed because it was lower than their expectations.

I am surprised though, that, if it's only a 4S, that it's taken this long. They refresh their computers every 6 months with better internals, Thunderbolt, etc., and the Macs are not even the best-selling product.

Yet their best-selling product, the iPhone, has a routine spec-bump (4S) after 1 year 3 months? Doesn't make sense to me. Unless it's what someone in another thread posted, which is that the software took a lot of time to fine-tune.

EDIT: actually, now that I think about it, it's only been delayed about 3 months, because they usually update their iPods/iPhone once a year. So the iPhone has only been delayed 3 months and the iPods have barely been delayed a month based on their usual refresh time.

But still, to have such a minimal update after we've waited so long on the BEST-SELLING product, I am surprised they are not doing an "iPad 2" on us and redesigning it.

People who are "pissed" about the lack of one feature or another in a ****ing cell phone need to reevaluate life in general. If their biggest issue in life is Apple's decision not to provide one feature in a phone then I envy them.

Sure the new iPhone may have been delayed for some kind of production issue but my theory is that they wanted to move the iPhone product cycle closer to the holidays particularly since some of the iPod product lines will be discontinued soon. But also I think they are trying to make WWDC more mac centric again. The past few years its really almost completely been about the iPhone.

Life is hard, eh?

I guess some of it has to do with the commonality of the iPhone. Most of us here have one and care about it to a degree. It's less so for things like car payments, rent, children, work woes, etc. Partly due to the lower age of part of the MR community.

In the end, it seems like people are focusing on iPhone features WAY too much here, but the devil's advocate point of view is that we're on an Apple rumors site and have signed up to discuss such things here, so we do.

I spend most of my time discussing other things with co-workers at work or my girlfriend at home, my parents over the phone. All of those things not even closely related to tech; But when I'm at work I love to talk iPhone and things like that on here. It's almost like a hobby.

I agree with your side though. As much as I can play devil's advocate, I happen to disagree with most of these kids (sorry, but the majority of you who get that passionate about this are kids) who freak out like this or have these wild points of view.

If any of you are familiar with Opie & Anthony, you'll appreciate this: Every time I read someone ranting and being ridiculous with some sort of "THE NEXT PHONE IS GONNA HAVE LTE OR ELSE IM GOING ANDROID!!!!1" I hear 'lil Jimmy Norton's character, Ted, screaming it the way he does lol

Point is, calm down kiddies. It's a phone. I know we all hate hearing that because the truth of it is, it's more than just a phone to a lot of us. Just keep in mind that while we all can and should be passionate about our hobbies and interests, there's a point where some of our opinions and passions cross into unreason. If only we could keep things pithy and pointed. If only.

I think the word you're looking for is "immaturity".

I don't even think it's immaturity. The same thing happens a lot in regard to PRSI. People just get very emotional about things sometimes. It's not always due to maturity or lack thereof, but rather the human way our emotions get the best of us and cause us to sometimes act in ways that we otherwise would have used better judgement.

I think it's also time. If the 4S is the only phone, then not only are we getting a phone that looks exactly the same as a phone released 16 months ago, but we have to wait an additional 12 months for a phone that looks different.

I think as well there's the assumption that iPhone and iOS must compete directly with Android. I'm sure that's not Apple's view. I daresay they might increase screen size at some point but that will be in their own time. If sales of larger screened phones grow/continue to grow at a higher rate than for the iPhone then maybe that will be accelerated.

After the problems last year - real and perceived - they won't want to risk problems and are likely to be playing safe this time around.

Knowing Apple, they'll be trying different screen sizes to find out the optimum shape. Personally, I'd rather they did that than rush out a new phone that turns out to be a mistake.

I think the increased competition from Android based phones, which are starting to not only catch up to the iPhone, but offer things the iPhone can't do or don't have (yet?), is what's making people who want to stay within the Apple ecosystem a little nervous and desirous of more in their next iPhone. Just a guess.

Look on the bright side though: It'll probably be much easier to pick up an iPhone 4S on day one.

And Apple has reasons for everything. :apple:

money and profits, if apple think they can make the most money buy only releasing a minor spec update and waiting for a 'revamp' model till next year, you can bet they will do it.

remember apple really only cares about the 95% of 'ordinary' users the 5% vocal techhead minority doesn't really matter to apple as that's not where the money comes from.

Which is presumably why Apple will continue to innovate in other areas. ICloud is one and I'm sure they have more planned.

A serious question here.. What has Android brought to the show since it was first released? What innovations have Google brought out? I don't doubt there are some. Just curious.

People are so damn entitled these days. Expecting to receive a 4+" display and total redesign just because they want it.

Go ahead and hop ship to Android after Tuesday. No one here will miss you. Apple will still sell millions of phones and break records. And you will most likely regret your decision to rely on the bucket of crap that is Android.

Edit: Ha, I guess that came off angry, but from the opposite side. Whatever. Sick of the complaining.

Actually I think the real risk here for Apple is share price!!

If the iPhone 5 actually turns out to be a 4GS - then I don't then think the issue is a mass migration to Android/Samsung etc- I think the real issue will simply become ambivalence - i.e that a LOT of people (me and every iPhone 4 user that I know) will simply go .."MEH".....and won't upgrade their 4 to a 4S - they will wait for the 5/6 !!!

This will devastate Apples upward trajectory of sales and market penetration......they will lose ground and appear weakened from an innovation and market penetration/market share perspective.....

....there quarterly sales numbers (whilst still stellar) will appear poor in a like-for-like comparison against last years iPhone 4 introduction...and questions will start to be asked......

the "analysts" will say "the glory days of Apple are over....its all because Jobs has left" etc etc.......and the share price will fall..........

...the risk then is that this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.......so I actually think Apple are on VERY dangerous ground here......

.....here's hoping for a 5 !!!

Spot on. Its already happening to some extent. for the previous 4 iPhones, apple stock has gained significant value in the weeks prior to the device being announced, however, since last week when the invites were sent out Apple stock has gone from somewhere around $405-$410 down to its current price of $378. Yes, the entire market has been in decline, but apple stock has dropped a greater % than the market average.

Seems like people are already worried about a simple speed/storage upgrade.

Because android phones are getting sleeker and more capable. The screen size is outdated, and lacks hardware that many androids have.

100% correct.

If Apple just comes out with a phone that looks similar to the current iPhone4, but dual core hardware and the iOS5 changes, that is just not enough in today's market, and is a let down. Especially after waiting extra long this time, the 5th gen iPhone taking an additional four months to come out, would make one think a super duper highly revised version should be on it's way, not just a minor spec bump.

I want to see at least a 4" screen size...LED notification light...Widgets...razor thin and lightweight...best in class battery life...better screen colors than Super AMOLED+...

Whatever happens, it's the way Apple intended. And Apple has reasons for everything. :apple:

This type of blind fanhood is sickening. People with this stance are the reason why :apple: can afford to pump out simple speed/storage bumps after 1.5 years, and still sell more phones than every other company.

You're giving the company a God complex, and following them like a religious extremist. Humans have the ability to ask questions, and create independent thought, dont abandon that.

People come to MacRumors and go nuts discussing all of the possible Apple announcements and iPhone features.

Then Apple announces any subset of those products or features and people go nuts because some of the possibilities didn't come to pass!

They complain and yet they still upgrade as well.

I hate people who rationalize not moving forward towards a better design just because the 4 was "good enough." So since the 4 is "good enough," we need to continue selling it, and then release another phone on top of that which looks exactly the same? Wow, how innovative.
