Of course they do..its called marketing. You cant blame them for that.
No, but you cannot argue that most of Apple's customers don't care about new features or gimmicks when Apple itself markets new features and gimmicks to their customers.

Unless Apple is wrong?

It's an OLED screen and the phone will be jailbroken. That's good enough for me.

I hope iOS 11.0 is sloppy as heck in terms of exploits with all the new APIs and stuff, and gets a jailbreak around the bend

I think that would secure a sale from me,

I am not out to bash the iPhone here, no. I think the iPhone X will be an amazing piece of new technology, just a great smartphone.

But...I just would have liked iOS 11 to have more revisions or a new UI with the introduction of an all new groundbreaking design in the X. But it seems I fall into a very small minority.

And then the price, starting at $1,000 !!! wow. That's a hell of a lot of money for a smartphone. And I agree Samsung charging what $900+ for the Note 8, that too is crazy.

I remember when flagship phones launched at the $650 - $700 price range for years, only until recently did they start going higher.

When talking about the price, keep in mind:
  • The iPhone 7 was class-leading when it was released, and still benchmarks better than the best Samsung model.
  • The 7s or 8 or whatever it's called (the non-X version to be announced tomorrow) will improve upon the 7, and it will most likely be priced the same as the 7 was. There would be absolutely nothing wrong with choosing that phone if budget is an issue.
  • The X is a new "Ferrari" model. I know it is hard for us enthusiasts to not feel entitled to whatever top-end model comes out at the price we are used to, but the reality is Apple will offer a range of phones at a range of prices which are all great phones. They are just adding a fancy one to the top of the list at a couple hundred dollar premium. And despite the waves of griping that will ensue, they will sell tons of them.

Curious on the 8 line, how will the home button work ? I know a lot of people would like it to be more like the newer HTC phones and OnePlus thumbprint were more like the touch pad the HTC 10/11 and OnePlus 3/3T/5.

Benchmarks are nice for headlines.
My 7+ and roommates S8 both run smooth and fast. If one is better than the other in "speed" terms, I would give it to the S8 as you can turn off animations. Speed is subjective.
Both great devices. ;)

The biggest ever change to IOS but I guess since it doesn't include what you want or think you need it is the same old. It is a very different OS that IOS 10 and IOS 9 etc.

Amazing how this thread turns up all the time and has no baring to the truth.

Most stale argument that we have to hear year in and year out, and yet Apple will still sell well over 100M new iPhones over the course of the next year, because the new phones provide more than enough changes in hardware and software to warrant an upgrade.

The question of "why don't they include options that have been available in jailbreaks for years" is easy to answer. Because only .01% of the population cares about dark mode or being able to move an icon or folder into a random spot. Pretty much nobody cares, literally.

AND, all leaks so far indicate significant improvements in both hardware and software...sorry if you can't move your folder onto the bottom of a blank page.

I'd disagree with your statement. With the huge amount of "what's on my iPhone" and iPhone organization videos and blog posts and that cocoppa is still highly used I would say more about 60% of iPhone users care about customization. Even when you ask current iPhone users that switched from Android what was the thing they missed most most times it will be customization.

The title of this thread is awful. It's like someone could make the most amazing enhancements (in-display TouchID, week-long or month-long battery life, etc.) and someone is saying "Why so excited about iPhone xxx? it's the same smartphone running the same OS..." that is a gross understatement...

60% is an absurd number. Maybe 1%, but that's probably a stretch.

I'm sticking with my trusty 6s for the time being. After trying both an android and windows phone in the past I made my way back to my iPhone. Boring it might be to some but it does what I need so I'm not fussed about how the phone or the ui look.

I'm sticking with 40-60%, 1% is an understatement, a huge understatement.
Not only is your estimation way to high, but that amount of people don't even know about the customization available in jailbreaks. If they did, either iPhone wouldn't be the most popular phone in the world or Apple would add customization features.

iPhone is only the most popular in the states, Android still has majority of phone worldwide by a lot (proving people do want customization).People have been asking for customization for years, what rock have you been under?

It's all about personal preference and the brand & products you trust; I get value for my hard earned ££££s and certainly don't get coaxed into whipping out my wallet.

Tbh any other smartphone brand in comparison to the iPhone just looks sub-standard in terms of the build quality & usability

The iPhone runs the same UI aesthetics since iOS 7 with very few app logo changes and a few additions here and there. The notification system is still clunky as hell on the iPhone. Excluding the iPhone X, the iPhone 6 design is showing up for a 4th straight generation. The 7/7+ charges using the same cheap proprietary junk known as "lightning," an iPhone 5 feature. Let's see, no LTE until the iPhone 5? No 4k camera until the 6S? 1gb RAM until the iPhone 6s/6s+? No software to take advantage of the 5.5" display?

But anyways I digress because Apple is truly innovative and always putting in maximum effort to get us all the best of the best. I mean iOS 7 to iOS 11's UI is so incredible and ground breaking. Maybe I should ask Elmo to design pure Android's UI to match iOS' ingenious aesthetics?

Tell me which Android phone has continuity? The same app ecosystem? The Apple ecosystem?

....

None. This is why us that are invested into Apple are really excited about the X. We finally get an up to date phone looks wise and we get to keep our wonderful ecosystem.

You just proves the topic creator's point. You listed a bunch of iOS features that people have already now. Nothing new.

I love what they brought up. Continuity? Push Bullet, What's App, FB Messenger, Hangouts all make iMessage interchangeable. "What about answering calls on your laptop or from a tablet?" I am going to spend that much more $ to get something like that and sacrifice a ton? That stuff might be nice, but not $1000 nice. Apple ecosystem? Overrated as hell. I could use many of the same apps to mimic the ecosystem. Plus, Apple makes it more intrusive with iTunes and more processes to get files onto a phone. At least with Android, a proper file system appeared for many years.

This is one of the main things that bothers me.

Up until iOS 8 I could cover for that by using Netatalk to mount my iPhone/iPad filesystem as a share on my desktop. Unfortunately, Netatalk broke with iOS 9 and the SMB alternatives don't really work.

Even with Windows you can mount at least the camera part of the file system with an iDevice. You cannot mount anything stock with a Mac.

It's irritating. It's 2017 and we are all still using iTunes to interact with our iDevices.

People will point out Dropbox and Google as ways to get files to and from an iDevice, but that's limited. I'd like to interact with the actual file system without having to be jailbroken and using iFile.

I am totally confused the major hype for the new iPhone X, I just don't get it. It's nothing new at all to really be excited about. And I am super smartphone nerd, total gadget geek.

Because it's running the same old boring iOS, sure the iPhone 8 will be all new tech, catching up to the looks and bezel less display Android phones have had for a year already. But at the end of the day, the fancy new phone wears off quickly, and your left with the OS you use day in, and day out 24/7, and iOS 11 is just like lame boring, locked down iOS 10, which was just like old iOS 9, which was like lame iOS 8, and the Fischer Price toy iOS 7 which started it all.

Who gives two ****s about the new design of the iPhone X, when it's running the same iOS still from iOS 7 basically ? I'd be way more excited and pumped if the new phone was just the iPhone 8 Plus, but with a totally revamped major revision to iOS. That would be breaking news and truly jaw dropping. But right now, this X is basically a Galaxy S8 running iOS. Yawn :( Once the shiny new toy feeling wears off, it will feel just like the iPhone 7, and iPhone 6S, and iPhone 6, etc...Nothing new at all really here.

To be honest, I fail to see the big excitement for the iPhone X, What's the big deal here ? My point being the OS in it, is the same thing we've seen for years, nothing new here, just old iOS, nothing new. Sure the phone itself is better FINALLY, but that's it.

Thing is I LOVE the iPhone, a Jailbreaked 7 Plus is the best smartphone IMO right now. But only JB iPhone's do it for me, otherwise Nexus / Pixel all the way.

Start your own phone company than. Or get a job at Apple and make a new iOS to your liking. No one is stopping you.
If you don't like it...don't buy it. Problem solved.

And the sad part is that people happily accept this wall-garden as if its the best OS possible. Sure, iOS has a ton of good features, but it is far from where it should be at this point. A file system would save me the headache of using iTunes to make ringtones from my library.

Can you not install your own ringtone from just downloading the from the app store on an iPhone ? really i do not know. With Android you grab any sound file, or ring tone app, and install the ones you like. No computer hookup or anything else needed, can do it all on the fly.

Or this, a lot of times I use my nexus 6P or Pixel XL as a portable harddrive, I have a big PDF I downloaded on my PC, I just plug my phone into the PC, and grab the file and throw it onto the phone, within seconds, unplug the phone, and the PDF is there on the phone for me. Easy, no big deal. Can this new file system in iOS 11 do the same now ?

Default app settings, let's say I prefer a different keyboard, or different Maps app, or different browser. I want the option to set defaults, not just be Safari only, or Apple maps, etc... I want the simple option to have specific apps set to default, and with my iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 10, that was not an option, which I found extremely frustrating. Did iOS 11 finally change that, allowing user default setting options ?
