I think the point is that the technology for push email has been around a long time and if you want to use it you should be able to have it.

BTW I played with a Storm for a few hours (friend has one) and it is nice, not iPhone nice, but getting there, BB is catching up!

i just went to a VZW on my lunch, there was no one there buying the STORM but i guess this store claimed 20 people bought it at 10am and they have another 10 on hold. no more available until next week. not even a display model. so i didn't get to play with one.

I did say, VZW.com and not a brick and mortar store. In any case, I highly doubt you'll even see a line for the Storm, and I never made a claim that this would happen. However, the Storm is a highly anticipated product for BB fans as well as provide a device that will stave off any borderline VZW users that were contemplating the iPhone. The Storm will keep them in VZW's hands.

Please note, that I am an iPhone 3G user (happy one at that), but I do work for VZW's marketing. I know the hard #s, and right now they are very good for the Storm. Will they achieve iPhone type #s? Doubtful, but it will be enough to keep people that were thinking about the iPhone and switching in VZW's and RIM's hands. Additionally, they'll probably pick up any stragglers that are anti-iPhone, but aren't interested in Android.

Features vs. Good Design

the iphone could use mms, text forwarding, copy and paste, but i would still argue that it's ahead of the competition as a complete package. it would take a lot for any competitor to match/exceed the iphone os and safari capabilities.

I totally agree with this. In order for iPhone to match the "features" of other phones, it's just a software patch. In order for other phones to catch-up with iPhones slick OS and web browser, they'll basically need a complete rethink and rewrite of the their OS.

Exactly. I see the Storm as retaining market share as opposed to gaining market share.

just got word a co-worker got his this morn (well sorta). he said he had to go to a mall an hour away that got in 75 STORMs and waited in line with at least 50 people before they opened. So I guess there were long lines...

He mainly complained about the sales reps at this store who had NO CLUE what to do. They just kept running into the back room for no reason. The "VZW system" went down so everyone had to wait about 1hr before they could start processing. After it took another hour to process his stuff he left the store with his new STORM only to find out he could not make any calls nor get online. So he went back into the store and had to wait another 1/2hr before being helped.

At this time he is at home with no device. He is waiting for a return call from VZW store (which is one hour away mind u) letting him know when his STORM will be availabe to pick up. They promised him by 5pm today.

That's the only info i got but i am not understanding this story... why would he have to wait?? I saw a girl in the building playing with her new STORM, tempted to ask her about it but i did not...

Why is this (and any other need) so hard for people to understand? Or rather, why do you need to understand it? :)

If you're a stockbroker and you're sent a message to sell now, but you don't get it for 15 minutes, that could be a fortune lost.

If you're someone who maintains equipment, and a massive server farm goes down, 15 minutes is a lot of unhappy people and even lost money in an enterprise environment.

But basically, if everyone had to wait at least 15 minutes during the day, it piles up into very significant delays, especially over tens of thousands of workers. Instant gratification is the word of the day for managers nowadays. Most large companies require a form of IM now.

Is it why all phones have MESSAGING? it's almost instant. If I need my broker it needs to be instant then send him a message and expect an instant reply. Why would I sent him an email to execute a trade that I want done right away???

e-MAIL....there is a MAIL part to it. so it was never suppose to be INSTANTANEOUS.

If it's that urgent wouldn't a phone call be a better option? Even if you send an email to someone who has push on their phone that doesn't guarantee that they have their phone on them, or that they will notice it right away. I just don't think that I would ever rely on text messaging or email if it really was urgent. A phone call seems so much more reliable.

Remember when VZW customers went crazy like this for the Voyager? No one even talks about it anymore. The same will probably happen here. It's not wishful thinking, but just the pattern I've observed with these so called 'killers'. Like the previous poster said, this is primarily to retain customers thinking about jumping ship for the iPhone.

copy and paste
PUSH email
screen rotates in sms and mail without the need for a stupid app.
bluetooth stereo

The iPhone has push email, besides copy and paste your requests are trivial and depend on the preference of the user. I'll give you copy and paste though, and I think it's important enough to be an end-all point. You should have just said "copy and paste."

Excellent points. People always ask this question.

That's assuming you can get through.

Believe me, I don't defend the idea of instant comms. I was just about the last contractor for a company of 60,000+ that even turned on IM. I can't get work done if everyone and their brother is calling or IM'ing.

But I can stand a ping letting me know there's a new email ... I can just look at the title and move on or look at its attachments and take care of it. (Note that the iPhone doesn't have MMS so no attachments to SMS.)

Just went and checked a storm out. It awful. Why would anyone want to click a touch screen, it just makes the whole process more complicated? I am fine with the iphone touch screen.

My iphone does push email with mobileme brilliantly. Not only my emails but my contacts and calendar get updated right away. My biggest complaint about my iphone vs my old Verizon phone is the GSM Chatter from nearby speakers. ITS AWFUL.

ok call me slow but some of these arguements to me are just plain whiny and irritating.

I work in IT. My iphone is no where near a replacement for my laptop it's just a convenience but not a necessity. I don't get this constant rambling for push email and copy and paste and mms. I swear we live in a world of instant gratification. If someone send u a mms and you can't view it now check it on ur laptop later or whatever. If you are awaiting an important email check it. I don't need my iphone to be an all everything. It's fine for me. It even got better with the addition of the app store. Only phone i think i ever wanna own. It's a fantastic device. I just get tired of reading the constant whining.

Just read this. So glad I didn't upgrade.

http://digg.com/apple/Why_the_BlackBerry_Storm_is_no_iPhone_killer

Except:
"The BlackBerry Storm is here at last. But why is it not the iPhone killer as Verizon, Vodafone and Research In Motion tout it to be?"

Why are people even considering this phone over the Bold, if any?

You say "upgrade," but you really mean cancel your AT&T plan, pay an early termination fee, get a Verizon plan and buy the phone. There is no upgrade. The Bold is on AT&T and I have to say, first-hand, it is absolutely stellar.

Dont even try to say that iPhone has real push, it doesnt. Its a huge battery hog the way they have it. It constantly pings the server looking for new email. Thats NOT push, thats a constant request. True push is patented by RIM, and your phone doesnt have to keep asking for mail.

Don't you need to deploy a BlackBerry server and license it from RIM to use "true push"?

Jeesus .... what is it with internet forums lately .... is everyone so insecure about their chosen device that they feel its a personal attack

This forum, along with many others are just becoming grounds for either complaints about MMS/CopyPaste for iphone ... or about how this phone is the other phones "killer"

Its getting really boring and i feel its getting to the point where i might have to say "bye bye" to so many forums because its just full of the same posts.

i never thought i'd be "boo'ed" at for having an iPhone.

I just left a VZW store and tried out a Storm. Its not bad. Its pretty cool actually. I am issued a Bold for work (just got it a few weeks ago) and the Storm is a lot better. But heaven forbid I whip out an iPhone inside a VZW store. I actually had 5 guys BOO at me giving me thumbs down. How immature is this? The sales kid said, "Dude, its like buying your dinner at Burger King and then walking into a Wendy's to eat it"

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!?!?!?!??!

posted from my iPhone

I'll probably be getting a Storm as soon as I can get an unlocked GSM one to run on AT&T. I'll gladly sell my iPhone. Yeah as others say, it's not perfect but neither is the iPhone but it is a BlackBerry and has all the features of a BlackBerry and more.

Had Research In Motion used WebKit to power their browser instead of their in-house rendering system, these issues might have been resolved.

Does the author even know what he's talking about?

The Storm's browser does use Webkit.

Bad reviews? Most reviews have been positive, just not the end-all be all phone.

Just an FYI, the VerizonWireless.com site is being pounded right now. Early #s show a HUGE number of orders the 1st day that it's on sale. Granted, it is the 1st day, but anyone claiming that the Storm won't do well needs to get their head checked.

Positive eh:

Positive indeed and this is not even half of them. :p

Call me crazy, but I actually WISH the Storm would be an iPhone "killer." This would be good competition for Apple and they would realize that they need to fix some of the easily-fixable flaws in the iPhone to stay competitive.

The consumers always win in a fiercely competitive business environment. I personally don't have either the iPhone or the Storm, but will get one of the two before Christmas. I'm current on Verizon, so the Storm seems like an obvious upgrade. On the other hand, I've been dying to get an iPhone.

How is Apple going to respond to the consumers like me? Hopefully by fixing some of the missing features in the iPhone and providing me with enough incentive to choose the iPhone over the Storm (or any other similar device that comes out in the future).

So here's to all of you iPhone fans out there who hope that someone will come along and compete with the iPhone to force Apple to implement some of these features that everyone seems to complain about...

Yes we are all hoping someone comes and competes but is it our fault if they are complacent? :p
