the only thing in this list that sounds impressive to me is the x5 optical zoom...and that wasn't a 16pm feature, it was a 15pm feature, and it didn't get better at all with the 16.. it's supposed to be 8x with the 17
Yeah but now you might lose your x5 zoom, there should be a fourth camera on the iPhone for like x5 and x15

Personally I am interested in capture competence rather than in counting lenses. Asking for "a fourth camera on the iPhone for like x5 and x15" IMO is just silly.

The number of lenses is already IMO very impressive for a small smartphone device that fits in my pocket. Walk into a camera shop and look at tele lenses; check out sizes and prices.

Sure if you are on an old iPhone, upgrade can be cool BUT again unless you want a Pro, you should consider iPhone 16 Pro even if you don’t want a year old phone because it should be much better… The iPhone 17 only seams to import some pro things and have an A19 chip… Tho iPhone 16 Pro will be better like the cam !
Sorry but that is a nonsensical statement. I explore new iPhone Pros with care, and IMO each iPhone Pro generation improves. Some folks may not like certain new features, but unequivocally each generation improves. Suggesting "Tho iPhone 16 Pro will be better" without having even touched a 17 pro makes no sense.

Ok we will talk about it in 5 days

Potentially may upgrade from 15 Pro to 17 Pro.

Battery health is degrading fast, been weighing up whether to get battery replaced for £100 or use that towards new phone

Improved thermals, anti reflective screen, improved cameras (5x zoom), ram increase etc all sound nice upgrades too.

The iPhone 17 looks like a pretty small upgrade to me, the iPhone air looks to me like a bad deal because of the camera and battery... So why the 17 ??? Many of us have the iPhone 14 Pro, if you don't really care about AI (and I don't understand why you would), then I don't feel it's worth to upgrade. There is no revolution here...

You don't know what the upgrade is going to be though, nothing has been released just speculation.

I went from a X Max to a 15 Pro when they came out, mostly because of the camera upgrade, I don't tend to upgrade my phone very often unless there is a compelling reason and year to year there really isn't much that changes enough. I suspect a lot of people feel the same way. My next phone upgrade will probably be iPhone 20 Pro or who knows,...

  • faster CPU
  • faster GPU
  • faster NN/NPU
  • better cameras
  • (rumored) anti-glare screen
Those first four are why I upgrade every year anyway. Anything else is just bonus.

Well it's the only way most can enjoy of the good performances of the computer... So yeah what are you going to do with all this power on your phone? 12gb of ram is cool but can you run two apps at the same time?

You asked why people were upgrading.

I answered that question, which has been the same answer I've given for every upgrade I've made since 2008 when I upgraded my original iPhone to the 3G.

I will pre-order a 17 Pro Max (or whatever it's called this year) on September 12th and look forward to unboxing it on September 19th, and will absolutely appreciate my new device for the year I have it.

It sounds like you're more interested in trying to convince people they don't enjoy the things they enjoy, which is a fool's errand. I upgrade for the reasons stated because those things are of value to me. They won't be of value to everyone, and that's fine, but they are to me (and many others, apparently), ergo I upgrade.
