I never lose Wifi signal in that the Wifi Icon is always visible and showing bars. I simply lose throughput of data.

I have tried with 3G enabled and disabled and it doesn't make any difference.

I have synced but haven't tried a full clean restore with restoring a back up but judging from comments here it won't help so I'd rather not go through that grief.

I did a complete restore and set up a new iPad — not from backup.
No luck.

Could you - or someone - try this tedious procedure:

  • Restore to 3.2 clean
  • Test that wifi is functioning in those conditions
  • Upgrade from functioning, clean 3.2 to 4.2 GM

My upgrade from current 3.2 to GM - no betas - caused no wifi problems.

I did a downgrade to 3.2.2. WiFi worked perfectly.
Once I installed the 4.2 GM, here again the WiFi issue.

WIFI Problem iPad 4.2GM

Same problem here, never had issues and I'm now using wifi with my MacBook but my iPad isn't working.

the 4.2 gm has a new modem firmware "5.15.04". Probably this is the issue.
Apple:apple: will probably  release the corrected version of firmware with the final release of iOS 4.2.

Thoroughly incorrect.

iPad 4.2 GM has 7.10.00 as modem firmware. And absolutely no Wifi problems here. Went straight to 4.2 GM and skipped betas. :)

It is definitely a bit random and I wonder if it is related to interference or channel choice. I haven't had time to try to find a more specific root cause but I did notice after tweaking my router yesterday, changing the channel, turning on the 5ghz network and applying wide channels that I was maintaining the connection to my iPad.

If I get the chance I will go back and try to recreate the problem and then make one change at a time until I can narrow it down.

This is exactly what I did. No wifi problems on 3.2 and no wifi problems on 4.2 GM. If anything, I think 4.2 GM has held a connection better for me. I never used any of the 4.2 betas.

Did you ever encounter any problems, or was this your first and only routine?

Has anyone who's had problems later tried this routine and fixed 'em?

I have problem too so I ask my friend who works on wifi at Apple. I sent him this link as well. He just tells me just now to wait and try again with final release. I guess they find the solution. Can't wait!! :)

Same problem here. Went from 3.2 to 4.2, no betas. Internet drops after a few minutes of use, sometimes im lucky and get a few hours. 64gb 3G iPad. This happens on different routers too. Hopefully fixed before final release as it's pretty annoying!

Yahh.. actually 5.15.04 is the new firmware for iphone 3G. The idea was to bring this to notice that the updated firmware could be the real issue. But there are different experiences every where. There are people with similar device and functioning wifi.
i tried to look up similar problems on google with search string as "WiFi problems with 4.2 GM?"
The result showed a thread from apple which i was not permitted to access even after login.
it said "Error: you do not have permission to view the requested forum or category."

check out the link

"LOL". Where? Forgive me, but I don't see a firmware version on the 'about' screen.

I have a wifi iPad. Is this modem the 3G modem? (In which case, I guess it's not relevant?)

I was replying to Chinmay about ipad 3G modem's firmware.

Is the WIFI issue associated with ipad Wifi models only ?

Re: people saying that they went straight to the GM (skipping the betas) and had no problems...

This problem doesn't happen with every router set-up.

If I lived at my friend's house instead of where I do, perhaps I'd think I didn't have a problem, because the iPad works fine there... But I don't. And it doesn't.

You can always find the beta's by using Google. However, all beta's do require your device UDID to be registered as a developer at apple, obviously decreasing the group that can use such beta's.

The GM does not require that registration and therefore everyone that knows how to use google is able to install it.

Not if you alt-click upgrade rather than restore. I've not got a registered UDID and I've never had a problem installing betas.

p.s. has anyone tried using an iphone in airplane mode but with the wifi radio switched on? Any problems there?

Well ...

... after reading all the posts and after having suffered this issue on my Wifi-only iPad since I had upgraded straight from 3.2.2 to 4.2 GM two weeks ago, I have come to the conclusion that this issue is certainly software related (I never had a connectivity issue with 3.2.2 or older firmware versions). However, since it seems to randomly affect only some iPads out there, there must be an hardware implication as well.

I look forward to trying out the official release ... and if the issue is still there, the Geniuses will have to replace my iPad under warranty for free :D
