Just to correct myself, earlier I stated that I get the error message of "you're not connected to the Internet" but when it drops out it actually says "safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".

Not sure if that makes a difference. I still have full signal when that error pops up

Having issues here too

3.2.2 upgrade to 4.2GM. Definitely having intermittent wifi issues. No pattern. Tried with and without location services enabled. Failed both ways. 16gb wifi only iPad. Purchased in August.
Router is mixed 2.4ghz channel 1 actiontec gt704-wg wpa encryption
Never should've tested 4.2 but figured it couldn't have been THAT widespread of a problem.

So it really seems an issue about the "power" of the signal.
Anyway, the internet connection stops working even if my iPad has 3 WiFi bars — but I'm not close to the router.

I would add that for me this issue:
A) Is definitely tied to distance. When I am sitting in my office, where wi-fi strength is great, it works and keeps working. When I am in my living room, where signal is weaker, it always drops after a short interval, and does not work until I turn off wi-fi and turn it back on on my iPad.

B) Once it stops working, it does not work, until I do the wi-fi on/off reset -- even if I move into an area with stronger connectivity.

The signal bars don't appear correlated, as I will show decent connectivity in terms of the bars, and the network settings show a connection, but it does not work. The tell is that when I tell it to renew the lease, it can't, and router, DNS and search domains go blank.

I am connecting via 2Wire box, and was 3.2 before jumping to GM. I had no interim installs.

Distance from Router

I'm not sure I can agree about distance. We used the iPad on the couch for a few hours today. It worked flawlessly for about 45 minutes, then suddenly while watching YouTube, I had to reset wifi 3 times in ten minutes. Seemed random and not related to distance from router. IMO. Had other crashes earlier in the day after the upgrade (4 in 20 minutes or so), then wife had one crash in an hour of usage. Really odd.

You know, I do appear to have reduced 5gHz range. No dropouts, but in my 'spot' on my stairwell to the back yard I can no longer see my 5ghz network, where I could with 3.2.1.

What type of fios router do u have? My actiontec can only my do G/B

Not sure. Its Actiontec. According to the posters over at dslreports.com, Verizon started rolling these out in July. Which is when I had my FiOS service set up. Does 802.11n. It's not dual band though, so any other devices will kick the entire network down to 802.11g. It's a big tall hideous thing. I'd rather use my own router, but then I'd have to go buy a super long ethernet cable and drill another hole in the wall from the outside to hook it up.

No problems fresh install of 4.2GM. Although, there is an 802.xx network that I could connect to last week on 3.2.2 and now will not work on 4.2GM. I believe this is a distance thing as I have a classroom with the router in sight and have no problems 802.xx.

Is anyone using WPA2 having wifi problems with 4.2 or is it just those using WPA?

Trying WPA2 now, no drop outs yet but I'm in the lounge at the moment which is closer to the modem.

Edit: no different, still getting drops outs.

I'm done with it. Downgraded to 3.2.2 this morning. I prefer Wifi over folders and multitasking.

Will keep an eye on this thread though, hoping for a solution.

This is probably a dumb question but how did so many people get 4.02 before the release date ? is GM a beta?

You can always find the beta's by using Google. However, all beta's do require your device UDID to be registered as a developer at apple, obviously decreasing the group that can use such beta's.

The GM does not require that registration and therefore everyone that knows how to use google is able to install it.

Thanks that cleared things up

Gold Master

Redshift, the reason some of us installed the GM is because typically (not always) the GM release of firmware/software is the same as the General Release that is pushed via Itunes. It's usually safe to do this, because the betas have been released to developers and testers to sniff out the bugs. In this case, there is a big bug that hasn't been squashed yet.

Possible Solution?

Like everyone else, I have had issues with 4.2 and wireless stability.

Yesterday, I decided to play with my wireless network settings to see if I could narrow things down a bit.

I have a D-Link DIR-825 router. This router has dual band and includes a guest mode. Initially I had the router setup to support both WPA and WPA2 encryption (the wireless device actually can chose with encryption, the router will accept either).

I changed that setting to just WPA, and the issues with my IPad went away. Changed then to WPA2, and I still was able to use my IPad without issue. Could it be an issue with the IPad not being able to handle an either/or encryption scenario?

Not saying this is a fix, but could be something for everyone to check into on their wireless router....

Mine's wet to WPA only and I have issues. I've tried everything under the sun to no avail. I had wifi issues originally on the iPad so Ive been experienced with ins and outs of getting it to work. Unfortunately the only fix will be from Apple. Lets hope they know about it and are fixing it now. If we dont see the official 4.2 release this week, then I'd bet they are waiting to get the wifi fixed.

I restored to 4.2gm and didn't use a backup and my wifi is working great and the iPad is a ton snappier everything is working great. No more wifi issues.

Wrong. Anyone could install the iPad iOS 4.2 BETAs.

I have a feeling Apple will be pushing out 4.2 tomorrow with no acknowledgment of these problems.

There is no excuse for this getting past their supposedly rigorous testing processes.

I'm having issues too.

16GB Wifi model. Airport express (the old one with G, not N). Had a few days now with no issues, even though I used it a lot. But the first 2 days after update, and now, I get no internet after 1-2 minutes.

But the problem is only with my own wifi, not the school wifi....

Fresh restore to iOS 4.2 from 3.2.1. No wifi issues over WPA2.

How do you do a fresh restore vs doing an update? I did an update.

EDIT: figured it out, trying it out again.
