Haven't seen sales in the states for a while - what you do find are great sales on games. There may be a console sale soon but it will be a wait and see.

Sounds like the WiiU is worth it....
I just got a 3DSXL and selling the Vita and PS3. Nintendo just seems to be fun. Anyone know of any deals on a wiiU?

I would not expect any sales until the competing XBone and PS4 consoles are released...so, that would be at about the November (??) timeframe.

Newsflash: Nintendo sold a mere 160,000 WiiU units this quarter, taking the total to 3.61 million. It also appears the WiiU is having a bad effect on Nintendo's profits - presumably stock that is sitting on shelves unsold.

Bad news for the Wii U really. Not sure how they can pull this one round - even the Gamecube sold over 21m.

Same thing they did with the 3DS - consoles don't sell until the games are released.

Nintendo is set to release a major new awesome game once a month for the foreseeable future starting with Pikmin 3 on Sunday.

Historically the first year of any console is sold to the die hards - normals don't jump aboard until that library has filled out.

Games sell Consoles

Whilst I agree with the sentiment that games sell consoles, the only other consoles that have had a launch this bad are the Dreamcast, 3DO and the other consoles that utterly flopped. Other consoles, even if it is just the 'hardcore' buying sell far more than the WiiU is managing.

As for a new title every month, really? The only titles I see on the horizon are Pikmin 3 and at some point in the future, a new Zelda game. What else is there?

A price drop in the fall and low cost games that have been out for a while plus new games for the holiday 2013 should do it.

You can get a XB360 basic unit for $199 and a PS3 bundle for $269, so it doesn't really make a $299 Wii U basic unit look very affordable...

Dropping the Wii U Basic to $249 plus whatever free game deals this holiday should pick things up for it for those that can't afford the new Next-Gen's...

I'm only in it for the first party titles and so do a lot of people, so I can totally understand why it only sold that many.

I don't think the 3DS having the same story bears any relation to the Wii U. The handheld and console markets are two very different arenas. What will be interesting is how the PS4 and Xbox One do. Is the market just fed up with consoles?

A price drop would definitely help some, but even a £200 WiiU Premium unit wouldn't really make me buy one - as you say, there's still the PS3 and 360 for less. A price of less than £200 would demolish Nintendo's bottom line even further.

Plus what games that are currently out will sell systems, even if cheaper? I can pick up ZombiU for less than £20 off Amazon today...

Agreed, handheld and home consoles behave totally differently - handheld units sell in larger numbers to kids (or rather, parents of), I see a lot of 3DS units out and about being used by the under 12s. This in turn means a lot more of a sensitivity to unit price, as evidenced by the upsurge in 3DS sales after the price cut.

I can understand people only being in it for the first party games, but equally can't see how that is going to turn the WiiU in to anything but a total flop. You need a vibrant third party publisher base to really push sales over time, not just first party.

August: Pikmin 3, New Super Luigi U (Disc Version), Ducktales Remastered, Disney Infinity, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Pokemon Rumble U

September: Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101

October: Just Dance 2014, Sonic Lost World, Batman: Arkham Origins, Wii Party U, Zelda Wind Waker HD

November: Call of Duty Ghosts, Watch Dogs, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

December: Super Mario 3D World, Wii Fit U

Early 2014 - Mario Kart 8

Late 2014 - Super Smash Bros. U

Those are some of the big ones - some great first party releases and 3rd party titles too.

Games do sell systems - in 5 years it will be cool to see how things turned out - until then its all speculation. Comparing the price to last gen systems isn't fair. It is fighting PS4 and X1. A Wii U can be bought for $100 less than the PS4 - it is a nice gap, but sure more would be better as most consumers want to pay less :)

So you have maybe 3-4 months with 1st party games that aren't muti-plat and likely going to sell better for Sony or MS.

Then you have this
the concern for the company must be the new low Wii U shipments dropped to. The console only shifted 160,000 units across the three months, less than half the figure of the previous quarter, leaving it at 3.61 million shipped to date.

The WiiU is a sinking ship, while Nintendo might have more money than Sega did to keep the boat afloat its only a matter of time before they start taking in way more water than they can push out.

I've owned a WiiU since launch, and short of 3 games its sat and collected dust. Basically it was a $450 game (NSMBU).. Sonic Racing was fun till it got overly repetitive, I played through most all of Lego City, and then it like its predecessor collected dust. I'm looking forward to Pikmin 3, as well as the other 1st party games but I'll buy anything multi-plat on my PS3 or PS4.

Nintendo released the WiiU too soon, they were plagued with software delay after delay. They should have waited a bit and released later, maybe with some better tech in the box, or with a more solid online plan cause lets face it Nintendo sucks when it comes to online play. The WiiU being better performance wise than the PS3 or 360 is great and all, welcome to 2006 Nintendo!!

Ooo I completely forgot that Sonic Lost World existed. I hope it's not a let down like most Sonic games, it looks genuinely brilliant.

Not sure if I'll pick up Windwaker. The Zelda remake I'm holding out for is Majora's Mask on 3DS :).

I'm almost done with Majora's Mask - playing it on my N64 for the very first time - planning on finishing it up right before The Wind Waker comes to the Wii U - that'll be my first experience with that game too.

For whatever reason I missed out on the Zelda games when I was younger.

Let's not forget that Japan/Nintendo severely suffered under the hurricane. Sony as well but wasn't just about to introduce a brandnew console. No excuse, but explains some things, too. My bet is Ninty starts big advertisements when more games are out. But personally, I don't follow much of this N-trashing / doom&gloom stuff (not happing on this site) as long as the Wii U continues to entertain me perfectly as it does.

re Zelda: Think I'll skip WW. Somehow all this floating on the sea doesn't attract me - I also hope they use a different art style for the next real Zelda (real as in not a remake); it sure does look beautiful, though. Last one was OoT for me and as much as I loved riding around with that pony, I think I get tired of it nowadays way to fast.
Btw, graphics on WW looking so gorgeous that I hope one could off-load all the screen infos except health bar onto the gamepad (just like the first Link games on the NES for example). Screen would be way too crowded as is right now imho.

Dang it, now you guys are tempting me to pick up New Super Luigi U! I have a $30 eShop credit from picking up Shin Megami Tensei IV burning in my eWallet...but I was leaning on picking up Mario & Luigi: Dream Team with it. But first I must beat Earthbound and finish reaching 100% on New Super Mario Bros. U!

Oh yeah...buy Earthbound.

Yea Earthbound is amazing - playing it for the first time - 24 hours into gameplay and have found a new favorite game.

As for Luigi vs Dream Team - that is a hard one - I'll be picking up some disc copies when it comes out as it is limited edition for this year only and should fetch some good money in the years to come. Got the DLC and had a blast playing it.

Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game. I HIGHLY recommend it! It just seems very well balanced. Combat is fun, exploring the ocean and isles scattered throughout the map was a blast, and the animation is truly beautiful. The only Zelda game I started a second playthrough of the second it was over.

Yeah, this is my first playthrough of it as well. I played it for like 5 minutes as a kid - my friends owned it and raved about it. So happy I have the chance to play it now - it's even better than I expected!

Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game. ...

Yea, I know. Never played it before but it looks great indeed. Guess it's just that there are WAY TOO MANY awesome games coming out these next months...:D

And still, cruising around the ocean for hours..I dunno...:p :D
I did spent my fair share of time fishing in the pond in Ocarina of Time, though...probably developing a short attention span while getting older (makes perfectly sense, though. Sad but true...lol)

Cloudberry Kingdom and Harvest Moon (SNES VC) come out today! - not too shabby plus Pikmin 3 on Sunday :)

Haha yes that is there too - got the Kirby VC bundle for Wii U and have plenty of Kirby now to keep me busy :)

Exactly my problem. I don't have the time or money for them all! Have to be picky, for sure.

Ha, I did too. I have Kirby everywhere. Just seems like I've been waiting forever on Dream Land 2.

Anyone gettin fm Pikmin? Where's the best place to pick it up? Wish I could get the uk deal for the wonderful 101.

I'll be going to Target at 8AM on Sunday to pick it up. I have a gift card that I can put to good use. I would normally go to BestBuy, but 11AM is just a bit too late ...

Walmart is another option if you want it first thing - 6AM for the stores around me, but then again it is Walmart :( ...

eShop release will release it at midnight if you want to start playing it right away.

I prefer the disc versions - as I like building up physical collections of games. If you got the deluxe Wii U you'll have the 10% back digital promotion that'll save you some money ...

Lots of options - bummer we don't have that 30% off 101 promo though
