Has any iOS update NOT slowed down older devices?
There are those who see iOS 10 as preforming better than iOS 9. It can also depend on what versions are being compared, meaning within the major version itself since comparing an initial/earlier version of a major version to the final/later version of a previous one would be one comparison, while comparing that earlier version to another earlier version would be another (one that isn't made by most).

I have probably been working in corporate environments too long. I'll say I'm officially 50/50 on this, can see both sides - but some of those exploits on older iOS versions are so bad that if I were making the call at Apple I'd rather lose the customer than have a policy that allowed people to move back to old versions in unlimited numbers.

I know that there is old hardware out there that never upgrades, and I'm not saying those people should be involuntarily upgraded. To me, it's striking a balance. I sympathize with being able to go backwards if things don't work out (beyond the very limited windows that Apple currently provides), but I understand why Apple does this, too. No great answers here for me, but YMMV.

Yep, Im with you on that.
Its a tough call and fine line between the two sides.
The best thing about it to me would be to be able to go down to jailbreakable firmware without having to jump through 100 hoops and manipulate shsh blobs and replay saved apt tickets:D

Oh come on now. If a Youtube video is to be accepted so should a post on MR
No it can't be accepted unless you show it to me a video.I trust my eyes over random claims which are easy to fabricate .Seeing is believing

. You are splitting hairs along with moving goalposts by bringing in geekbench.
We are right on topic on this one.If YouTube videos are anecdotes, all PC benchmark videos, all benchmark scores , all phone torture tests are fake. So pick a side.Either it's all fake or it's all real

he question at hand is:"would iOS 11 slow down a 6s". The correct answer is it yet remains to be seen.
iOS 11 will slow it down because all iPhones haven't performed as good as they used to on the version they shipped with. There is no reason to expect the 6s to be an exception. And for those saying 7 and 6s will be obsolete at the same time ,the 7 plus has 3 gigs of ram which will be the standard on next gen iPhone 8 so the 6s is the only phone for the chopping block next year

The 6s and the 7 has the same amount of RAM. So, when Apple stop to support the 6s, the year after the 7 will be dropped from iOS support

iOS 9 was a horrible release. It's easy to surpass trash. Now if it surpasses the last versions of iOS 8 we are onto something

iOS 8 was easily the worst release.

If anecdotal is to be accepted, then all forms are accepted...including forum posts. I trust forum posts as much as videos as videos can be manipulated and they are as much a one-off as a post. Take away from that what you will.

iOS 10 did not slow down my 5s or 6s, I suspect iOS 11 won't either.

It wasnt because iOS 9 never reached the performance of iOS 8.3+

YouTube is full of videos demonstrating what I am talking about and there arent any videos or proofs to back up your claims so what you are stating are anecdotes while what I am stating are demonstrations of tests in controlled scenarios. YouTube videos have been held as evidence in courts so your wild claims seem disingenuous

You have yet to prove to me how all videos on YouTube have seemingly been manipulated to count as anecdotes.I could call every YouTube video even the ones with benchmarks as manipulated by oveclocking hardware without any proof

iOS 10 fixed the rubbish that iOS 9 was and even yet still cant match iOS 8. iOS 9 was a worse release than Android Lollipop and thats saying something .Horrible battery life and random stutters everywhere

This isnt the fault of iOS 10 though which performs superbly on the iPhone 7 but based on my limited experience with the 6s on iOS 10 I could easily see stutters when using 3DT and in the app switcher

iOS 9 is faster than iOS 8. Its been "proven" beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's all over the Internet. You can search the benchmarks yourself.

So basically a newer version of iOS performs better than a previous one then. And right away we are back to moving the goalposts. Quelle surprise.

Still nowhere near iOS 8.4.1 on older devices

Where is it proven. All the videos show iOS 8 destroying iOS 9 in performance. That Metal API was complete crap .Your gospel Anandtech even had half a page dedicated to stutters in their review
I hated iOS 9. But I didn't know I hated it until I got iOS 10.
Personally I think that the reason I feel iOS 10 is smoother than iOS 9 is because they simply sped up the animations so I don't see any stutter. If they slowed it down it would probably be lagcity all over again. From what Anandtech said, the smoothest phone experience on the planet ever is on an iPhone 5 with iOS 6 .Not surprising considering who was in charge back then

Look at the benchmarks. The Safari engine was rewritten in iOS 9 making that component faster than iOS 8.

Interesting the iPhones 1, 2, 3,4,4s weeny smooth given you know who was in charge. Besides iPhone 5 came out in 2012 and you know who was in charge then.

I agree my iPhone 5 was BUTTER

IOS 8 is where the 4S started to get slow.IOS 9 made it worse. The IPhone 5 is very usuable with iOS 10. Of course, sometimes it have some delays , but this is completely understandable for a 4 year old device.

I want to see how IOS 11 will perform on iPad Air 1 and IPhone 5S.

Sharing my anecdote:

My own rule of thumb is that whatever iOS version comes after the version that came in the box runs much better. So for example, if your iPhone came with iOS 4 out of the box, 5 will run much better.

After that, it's a crapshoot.

After that, don't upgrade.

Many find that it's typically the version that the phone came with that is better as far as performance at least compared to subsequent versions. It's certainly not always the case necessarily, and might not be something everyone feels the same way about, but that's typically the more general rule.
