The problem with smart phones is that some people aren't. It simply isn't that hard to ignore the nag and delete the downloaded update file, and it just doesn't happen that frequently. I think my Air 2, which is running 9.3.5, has had this happen twice in the last six weeks or eight weeks.

Those videos are still anecdotal in the sense they represent a data point. Hard to believe after all these posts on this subject, back to the same fundamental hyperbole.

That video maybe anecdotal but it is one more than the number of videos I have seen showing older iphones running the latest iOS faster, which is zero videos.

...
I'm imaging a court room scene somewhere in California, a murderer on trial is arguing that the video of him killing someone is anecdotal, that there are many signed statements from family saying he didn't kill anyone.

Certainly that court case is analogous to this. however the point about "anecdotal " evidence stands, imo.

Why is this so complicated when on Android I can simply tick a setting on not to notify me EVER .Anyone who can do this convoluted process doesnt need to turn that off as they wont install the update in the first place. The average joe like my mom sees that red badge goes in settings and installs the update seeing that "1" .Why arent consumers given a warning about device performance?

It's even simpler than that for many Android phones--updates are just not available at all.

I agree, they should have an option not to notify or download OTA updates.
Maybe in a future iOS release.

It's not complicated. It's meant to alert one to an update and it does this job very well. I tell my wife and children to install every update as soon as it comes out.

Correction; They are not available for phones that cannot handle the update. For instance iPad Mini should have been abandoned on iOS 7 as it cant handle iOS 10. Its called facing reality and not gimping phones to force people to upgrade

Or maybe its meant to trap people into updating and slowing down their phones and it does its job very well. Thanks to it,Tim brags about adoption numbers at keynotes.Wish I knew how much of that chart consists of unhappy customers trapped into upgrading

They should allow me to downgrade like Google does with Pixel and with Nexus.I would have downgraded my iPad Mini on iOS 7 and kept it there. My iPhone 6 would be on iOS 8.4.1 even now.But then there are many like me who would do the same and the result would be fragmentation which ruins that glorious marketing pie chart

As in plenty of phones that don't get any updates at all, not even various security ones or anything, just nothing. That's basically how these apples and oranges comparisons are basically neither here nor there, and brining them up is rather moot.

So, that needs a "please explain."

Well I originally thought iOS 10 would ruin the iPhone 5 but I was surprised that it didn't. My mom has the 5 and she said iOS 10 has improved it software wise vs iOS 9. I tried it out myself and it's pretty nice.

I would love the option to be able to downgrade firmware.
Mostly for jb purposes.
Sadly I doubt Apple would go for it:(

I was shocked as well when I heard reports
The iPhone 5 was surviving with iOS 10. I think this a positive reflection for others who seem concerned about rather their iPhone will 'Survive' an iOS update, being it's rather evident that iPhones appear to last longer than expected in terms of software updates.

Sharing my anecdote:

My own rule of thumb is that whatever iOS version comes after the version that came in the box runs much better. So for example, if your iPhone came with iOS 4 out of the box, 5 will run much better.

After that, it's a crapshoot.

After that, don't upgrade.

I tend to agree with this, the version 1 year after your iphone release will probably be optimised for that phone.
But now a days iphone specs (like processors) have a 3-years update cycle so that will probably move the "don't upgrade" version 1 version off.

I'd guess iOS 11 will be fine on the 6s, 12 very questionable, 13 compatable but it will slow it the hell down.

"Trap" people is the ol' conspiracy theory. There are plenty of options for those who feel trapped.

If you want to know "unhappy people" who got trapped, easy-peasy, start a poll.

No there aren't . Do you want them to repurchase $4000 worth hardware for another ecosystem not to mention all the app purchases that go away with it ?

I would but once the stats inevitably skew in my favour you would cry "unscientific poll" and what not.Besides the average joe isn't on this site so the poll wouldnt be fair .

Hyperbole plain and simple. Whatever you decide to do, I can't tell you how to best manage your technology.

As far as the poll, you should just try it. You may be surprised. But you are right, MR doesn't really speak for the tens and tens of millions of other apple consumers.

I didn't ask for your help.I am telling you what a normal rational person would do.No one is gonna dump $4000 worth of ecosystem hardware for a $800 phone.

9to5 already did. 70% said the new release of iOS 9 crippled their old devices
