I've had mine 5 days. There are times when I notice the difference in sizes. But 95% of the time, I don't even notice. If an X Plus comes next year, I might be interested. I'd want to see the size first. While I have large hands very well suited for the Plus line, I do like how the X fits better in a pocket.
FYI, while I do occasionally notice the difference in screen size, the other benefits still outweigh that small downside for me. Also, when I go back to my Plus, it now feels a little on the big side. Finally, I have an iPad, so watching media on my phone isn't a factor in my decisions. I
might feel different if that wasn't the case.

I would return if I were you, but I adjusted in a few minutes to the small difference in width. Everyone is different though.
I didn't even need that. Maybe it's because I switch between keyboard sizes all day (phone, iPad, laptop, full-sized keyboard at work). Whatever the reason, I needed no adjustment time. I just started using it. I'm not really surprised. I find myself needing to reply to a message from time to time on my girlfriend's S8, and I've never had problems there either.
As you say, everyone is different.
