Screen wise, the iPhone 8 plus is wider but not taller. Please look at the video above to verify, but yes the normal size iPhone 8 is about the same as the iPhone X. Way bigger is subjective and I would say it is bigger but not way bigger.

Actually the difference in screen size (talking total area here so that is the parameters of my post) between an non-Plus and a X is _way_ greater than a Plus and a X.

Plus v. X display area difference = +1.2% for Plus
non-Plus v. X display area diff = +27% for the X

The X isn’t tall enough to make up for the lost width. There is also a notch area that needs to be subtracted.

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/70wpmt/calculating_the_actual_area_of_the_iphone_x/

The plus iPhones isn’t that much wider than the X. Reading the comments on there, everyone don’t seem to agree either. However I understand now that the iPhone X screen surface area is a little smaller. At less than 3% smaller isn’t significant at all.

Some people are saying plus users will not be satisfied with this phone. It couldn’t be because of the screen, it’s less than 3% less surface area. My self as a previous plus user wanted the big screen and not a bigger phone.

If you are a plus user and you are satisfied with the current screen size, you will also be satisfied with the X screen size. What people on here is implying that plus users want a bigger phone over the screens?

It is because of the screens.

Please watch this video. It is more than 3%.

This video did not calculate the total screen surface area. The only thing it proved was that the plus sizes phones are wider. Phone Arena on the other hand calculated the actual surface area because they wanted to be thorough.

To be exact, the iPhone X screen surface is 2.6% smaller than the plus iPhone models.

And a good section of that surface area is USELESS due to the notch. So PhoneArena does not take that into consideration. Subtract that area of the screen and there is a much larger difference.

Remind everyone the iPhone X was to replace the 6,7,8 users not the plus users. The iPhone 8 plus still has the larger screen and is still Apples flagship imho. Next year there maybe a X plus, which will be the one I switch too.

Before arguing saying the X screen is larger because of false numbers, watch this video.

You can keep trying to convince yourself and post this video but it doesn’t change the fact that you get a big screen in a smaller package. The difference in size between the X and the Plus is very minimal. Plus the X doesn’t have the big bezels. You can try to convince yourself all you want but the 8 is the past. The X is the future.

Because you don’t consider the area around the notch to be useful doesn’t meant it isn’t. The fact is it’s part of the screen, it displays information. You can pull down information such as notification and control center. It has function, it requires you to use your finger to activate those functions, therefore it is useful.

He’s just trying to convince himself that he made the better choice. He didn’t. After having 3 Pluses I stupidly went with the 8. When I had a chance to play with the X I realized I made a mistake. Now I have an 8 I need to sell.

The notch serves the purposes you said and if you Touch it the screen rapidly scrolls up to the top which I like.

LOL! I rather have a usable screen than one that is slim and tall. I can fit more on the 8 plus one. I don't have to scroll as much reading pages, emails, etc. And on Youtube videos I have a bigger screen on the 8 plus because that notch cuts it out. Sorry, that you refuse to see the light, but the facts are out there.

No, you keep trying to convince yourself you made the right choice with the smaller X. The X isn't here to replace the plus, it's here to replace the 6,7,8 version of the phones.

It's about the utilization of the display area too. iPhone X utilizes the display area poorly.

For example:
  • Status bar is 40 points tall instead of 20 points with previous iPhones
  • To accommodate the notch, there are safe areas all around the display, e.g. look at the iMessage app and the blank space at sides and bottom
  • Landscape mode results in letterbox for many apps

Unlike you, I don’t need public approval for my purchase. I’m not on the 8 Plus thread trying to convince every one the X is better. I had the 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus and 8. The X blows all of them away. Enjoy your old looking phone. This former Pluser loves the X. To each his own. If you love the Plus so much I don’t know why you care that some of us love the X more. Seems like your validation seeking.

Well, I am sure if you trade in your old plus and use the new X for a while you'll forget about the lack of width. However, if you hang onto that plus and constantly compare you'll drive yourself nuts.

I am still deciding what to upgrade to from my 6+. Its either the X or the Samsung Galaxy s8. Comparing my 6 plus to the X, yes you'll notice the width difference and the slightly warmer tone of the X OLED display (even with true tone off). However, I will be trading in my 6+, so I won't have it laying around to compare/contrast.

Again there is functionality up there. I don’t expect you to understand or accept it because you don’t own an iPhone X m. I get that you would prefer more icons in the space below the keyboard in iMessage or move the entire keyboard down, I like it the way it is. It is easier to type in the current position. I have tried simulating typing and continuously tapping space and enter as if it were down at the bottom, it was very uncomfortable. Apps that are letterboxed arent updated, most of the apps I use are updated for the iPhone X, and the ones that aren’t will receive an update in the near future.

You guys are making a fatal error in judgement. You don’t realize that it is us plus users who are enjoying the iPhone X phone and screen size. We aren’t complaining about the screen size. It’s you, the people who don’t have it are complaining about the screen size. Oh and just so you’re aware, since you want to talk about fitting more on the screen.

The iPhone X can fit more on its screen since it has a higher resolution. However stay on your plus phone that is 2.6% larger screen surface area and boast how it is way superior when in reality it isn’t. Do you have an HD TV or an old box tv?

We are the plus users and we love the iPhone X.

What iPhones should get is the PiP feature like the iPads got since iOS9. I used PiP on my 3.7" Nexus One using MoboPlayer app. Also, unfortunate iPhone X can't have the homescreen in landscape mode like the Plus models. No split-screen apps like you can do on Android since Nougat. Really wasted real estate.

Right, anyone who complains about the X doesn't own it. o_O

It's pretty clear you have zero understanding of the UI system of the iPhone.

iPhone graphical elements are displayed based on points, not resolution. The X has a higher resolution than the non-Plus but the content displayed is the same because both are 375 points wide.

Apple Human Interface Guidelines: "In portrait orientation, the width of the display on iPhone X matches the width of the 4.7" displays of iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8."

Had one since day one, BTW.

As of this moment, the X is smaller, simply because few apps are taking advantage of the new screen resolution. Most apps are still made for the older resolution, which means 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch above and below is wasted. Once apps stretch out to the full resolution of the phone, the X will be as big, or close to it.

But the pace of app updates to th X resolution is disappointedly slow.

Totally wrong, but if you want to believe it, that's fine.

iPhone graphical elements are not based on resolution. iPhone uses a point system to determine what fits on the screen. The X has a slightly smaller canvas than the Plus.

You should really educate yourself first, then come back for discussion.

first i was skeptical i thought the pluses size are bigger then i compare my 7 plus with X at the apple store and tried measuring it and the pluses are wider but the X is significally longer, side by side by side the X is bigger though,on the otherhand the X is a little wider than the regular iphone

Not true. I’ve been a Plus user since the 6 and love the X. You quickly adapt to the different size.
So it's fair to say you now place form factor ahead of screen size then?
[doublepost=1510452148][/doublepost]
I disagree. If you’ve been using iPhone plus sizes, this is easily the right phone for you since the screen is a little bigger.

Could you explain why this would not be ideal for plus sizes users?

The usable screen area is actually smaller. Main benefit of X is height when in Portrait mode, but then the smaller width may not be to Plus sized users liking. Landscape mode reveals the difference even more, as the height is then to the Plus' advantage.

Really depends on which mode Plus users favour - Portrait or Landscape. The former; not much difference, latter; more obvious difference.

I am going to get the X in March as my work phone will be due. And I will have best of both worlds. 8 plus and X. :p

Have you used both X and Plus? The “usable” area is substantially different. I had X for 4 days before I returned it and now waiting for 8 Plus. Apps are not updated for X layout so you waste a lot of space, the notch, gap under the keyboard.. all take away from usable space.

X is a nice idea that was executed poorly. Hopefully next year they have X Plus.
