what do you mean the screen doesn't rotate??
what a lame thing is that? and WHY?
are you sure about that?
what's the reason?
I think reporters playing with the iPhone X on event day noted it doesn’t rotate the home screen like the plus models do.

I don’t use it personally, but I know many people who do while docking the phone, laying down, etc.

I rarely use my 7 Plus that way, and most apps don’t even support it. Its not a big deal.

Yep... the X is more for non-Plus owners.

The only X I'd be interested in would be next year's X Plus... that is rid of that hideous notch.
If the Plus-Notch design is released next year, the notch may be less obtrusive.

Whether it is or not, I think you'll still buy it, as will many Plus owners who were bagging out the notch this year.

I feel the notch isn't the issue, it's the smaller usable screen Plus owners don't appreciate, especially in Landscape mode, a mode they bought the Plus for.

are we sure it doesn’t rotate to landscape

The screen is taller than a plus. But narrower. So to say its smaller all around is not looking at the whole picture. Pun intended. I can say with certainty most people use their phone in portrait. So we won't be losing much.

They’re both an issue and why I went with the 8 Plus.

The first step for me to be interested in a future X will have to be a Plus screen. That trumps everything for me.

I’m so used to the display size (not the whole phone size) of iPhone 7 Plus, and even though I only had the Plus for couple of months,I just cannot stand small screen size of standard iPhones anymore.

So I’m thinking about pre-ordering an iPhone X,I believed the numbers and thought it’s gonna be same screen size but smaller form factor.(perfect)

But now everyone is talking about iPhone X display size being more similar to standard iPhones rather than Plus due to screen ratio, notch etc

Are there other iPhone Plus owners worried about iPhone X display size?

This is pretty much my only worry.
Gonna have to order one but at the moment I’m 50/50 as to wether I’ll be keeping it or returning/scalping it (coming from a non-scalper).

This is what I am referring to, bars on all sides:
iphone-x-video-modes.gif

To me that looks like a 2.35:1 movie playing. It would have bars at the top and bottom on any iPhone. And the physical bezels would act as black bars on the sides of the picture. I expect something 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 will extend the top and bottom of the picture to the edges. Just like they fill widescreen TVs.

I would disable landscape on my Plus If I could. I never use it.

It's true. I never use landscape on my iPhone 7 Plus either. And one of the reasons I actually thought I would like the iPhone Plus model, was landscape. But it requires me to use two hands and I find that to be more uncomfortable. I would say for those who are gaming on their iPhone Plus, it be more of an advantage.

I could see me watching similar videos with 2.39:1 aspect ratio in full screen. Losing a bit on the sides and corners is not a deal breaker for me. Even TV channels do it regularly when they are showing movies since the most important information in a movie is usually closer to the centre.

Having said that, TV shows will not be nice in full screen since they are 16:9 and that means losing a lot of information on the top, bottom and centre. Maybe some YouTube 16:9 clips will work in full screen but other than that you would want to stick to the original 16:9.

For the Plus users out there, hopefully this will give you a better idea of what the X will feel like.

An iPhone X screen protector is laid on top of an iPhone 7 Plus. The bottom of the iPhone X protector is flush with the bottom of the 7 Plus display.

The X is significantly narrower but also has a taller display. Unfortunately, the X loses about 6mm on top (ears) and 6mm on bottom (gesture area).

The X has a taller display, but how much of that is usable? Not much in my opinion.

The form factor is good. I’m usd to a larger phone now that they have released plus models. I went to a note 8 after having the note 7 shortly between years of iPhones. I sit here with the note 8 now and loving it.. and I think if they had a larger version of the x I may have gotten it. I’ll wait a year and see what they do. I know this is off the topic a bit but just my 2 cents .

many thanks. really helps visualize this.
i am mostly worried about losing so much width.
of course once we will test it live we'll know exactly what to choose (or skip)

I will probably get the X Plus if they make one. However, I'd be a hypocrite for doing so. I just can't love the notch. Having to learn to love it is a ridiculous position for a consumer to embrace.

This forum is going to explode on release day from all the Plus users complaining that Apple told them the X had a bigger screen...

LOL

If it makes you feel better, you won't be the only one.

Although, I had a feeling many Plus owners (maybe not yourself) who were upset with the notch were actually more angry that they no longer had the flagship device in Apple's range.

Next year, they'll come around & accept the notch on their more screen real estate-efficient displays (as non-Plus owners are this year).....coincidence?...nah. :D

I've never given a rat's about having the "flagship device" because it boils down to 1 thing... nobody cares what phone I have... and I don't care what phone anyone else has.

I guess it's a status symbol in today's world though? "ZOMG he's got an iPhone X! I wanna be as cool as him."

Really? Well, that ain't me. If you wanna know what I think... here... I'll summarize.

I've got an iPhone 8 Plus that is an amazing phone. The screen size is perfect... the phone is fast, speakers sound great, battery life is stellar, touch ID works great, and it's got 256gb of storage with the A11 bionic chip... ironically the same storage and processor as the "flagship" iPhone X with a narrower screen that I don't want... Face ID that is unproven and I also don't care about, dual IOS that makes no difference to me as well as having a notch that my eyes are immediately drawn to and would annoy me to no end.

But hey, enjoy your flagship phone! I'm enjoying my 8 Plus!

It will be an adjustment but rather have a smaller screen that be stuck with a 4 year old design. It’s 2017 afterall
