It will be an adjustment but rather have a smaller screen that be stuck with a 4 year old design. It’s 2017 afterall

6/7/8 design was released in Sept 2014.

That's barely 3 years.

Far from outdated in today's tech world. If you wanna talk about outdated phone design lets talk about the 4... followed by the 5.

It’s still very outdated. It’s not a 2017 design. It has so much wasted space. The fact it’s the same size as the note 8 while being 0.8 inches smaller says it all.

It’s obviously a great phone for what it does but it’s old tech. When you compare it to the new galaxy devices and even the Chinese low budge models it looks very outdated.

I would much rather pay more to get the design I want that me stuck with the same form factor as my 7 plus. While I do enjoy my current 7 plus a change in design is needed

... and the X still has a smaller screen area than the Plus.

I just can't buy into the hype. Let's pretend for a minute I didn't like the "outdated" bezels on my 8 Plus... moving to a smaller more narrow screen (I won't even mention the hideous notch) isn't the answer for me.

I'd probably wait till next year to see if they had an X Plus.

Oh wait... that's what I am doing.

Enjoy your X. :)

Don’t get me wrong the 8 plus is still a great device and has all the features i would want apart from the OLED display and likely a slightly worse camera if rumours are true but there comes a time where i wanted a desigh change from what I’m used to.

Not like i hate the design i just wanted to see a change :) i’m Still happily using my 7 plus until the x arrives.

If it makes you feel better, you won't be the only one.

Although, I had a feeling many Plus owners (maybe not yourself) who were upset with the notch where actually more angry that they no longer had the flagship device in Apple's range.

Next year, they'll come around & accept the notch on their more screen real estate-efficient displays (as non-Plus owners are this year).....coincidence?...nah. :D

Yeah, the consumer psychology at play is fascinating. If I look deep into my own mindset, I probably prefer second gen versions of phones because of the refinement. I need to see the X in action and hear what users say about the UX. A year is long enough for 'us' and the developers to showcase the phone. I'm just not comfortable with it at the moment. But much like I scoffed at the Plus and said 'Never!', I changed my mind when I actually used it.

The X Plus variant reasoning is bang on the money though :)

Anyways, phones are personal. People shouldn't have to justify but here we are. It's all part of the fun and games.

I'm pretty sure X v.2 is gonna be a whole lot better than X v.1 and I have no problems going with a proven 3 year old design for a year in the meantime.

I have no problems embracing change... but I'm still not gonna buy a flawed 1st gen product.

Well each year a product should be improved so yes next years x plus will be better but thats part of tech. A year later things will be more outdated. I don’t see the x being a flawed product at all. It will work very well. Can there be bugs? Sure there have been with IOS 11 but thats normal.

I'm yet to see evidence of the X being a 'flawed 1st gen product'.

Evidence I have seen is of many here convince themselves that it is flawed, perhaps to justify their purchase decisions before the X has even been released.

These blind-rejectors may indeed be right, but without having seen a single review of the X, it appears justification plays a big part in their game.

But hey, enjoy your flagship phone! I'm enjoying my 8 Plus!

Not sure if you're referring to me, but I'm yet to commit to the X. I'll wait until reviews reveal negatives before I decide on that. It's the actual negatives, not perceived, that will help me decide whether the X is a worthy upgrade the my 6s.

No bezels and OLED is everything I've ever wanted. If I place aside the notch and ignore it, I guess the issue I have is...hmm...the fact it's first gen. Seems like a daft reason to side step it. Maybe I'm naive to think it will take another 6 months or so for devs to optimise for the X.

I always say this with smartphones. Post-key note, for so many years, I've been like "DAMN I WANT IT". I actually failed to have that emotive reaction this year. Wasn't even going to get an 8+ until I worked out the logistics for upgrading in 12 months again.

I'm still excited for those getting the X. Like I've also said many times, until you have the device in your hands and you're using it daily...that's when the true opinion forms.

No first gen is flawed (well 'gates' aside) but I think some are happy for the second generation to roll in after everyone else has beta tested the prototype :)

Seriously though, justification and rationalising is what we all do. It's how we all find our groove and decide on a device - which let's face it - is now part and parcel of every day life.

This is what I am referring to, bars on all sides:

Ah okay, got ya. I don't mind so much, but I see your point. I actually don't mind how it looks full screen though so who am I to say haha.

Nicely put, spooky.

I'm just havin a dig at the few here with extreme opinions on a product they (& the rest of us) don't know much about at this point in time. :D

This forum is going to explode on release day from all the Plus users complaining that Apple told them the X had a bigger screen...

LOL

I'd imagine people on this forum especially know what they are buying. It's a small reduction in screen size but without bezels, chin, and a home button, it will feel like it's larger. Apple trickery at it's best. Works for me.

Better stop calling the notch hideous. It's here to stay and once Apple discontinues the LCD lineup all models will have it.

Again, consumer psychology is so deep here. I want Apple and Samsung and Google etc to retain a sense of competition because that breeds innovation (or at least it should). What drives this competition is us - the buyers. 'We' get over protective with the manufacturers. It turns into football tribalism. You see it with PS4 and the Xbone (lol, just jesting). It's quite alright to be critical of something you love or support.

Re: Android. I quite like the look of the Pixel Plus (bezels and all) but again much like the X...something is missing for me. It's not quite fully cooked for my taste. Not yet. I like that there are options.

I love competition too mate. If it wasn't for all these players, we wouldn't be seeing the quality & range of products we're spoilt for choice of these days.

It keeps them all on their toes & fast-tracks their progression/innovation as you say.

If it was just Apple, we'd see a slow trickle of features in each phone update that wouldn't be near advanced what we see today.

I see myself as a hybrid Apple user - love their phones/ecosystem, but use Google Apps primarily for my day to day needs.

Taller? Sure. Similar to the 4 going to the 5.

Larger?

Sorry... I just wouldn't use that adjective. Instead I'd use "narrower."

Maybe it's just me but I most certainly can see the 6.5mm difference in width in this X screen protector placed over a Plus.

I doubt he/she has a source, but it should be logic at this point. Do you expect them to introduce a new generation iPhone and then all of a sudden drop the notch? I'd expect it to be here at least through 2020.

That picture you posted is helpful also. I am waiting for my case, but that size should be really nice to hold. Thanks! You have to remember also, a large portion of that Plus is bezel and chin, being filled with all screen will be much nicer.

It's simple. The notch was created because without the ntoch it looks like any other Galaxy or an LG phone. It's the unique identifier for the iPhone. You can even spot it in the design outline they made for the X series.

Then what's the difference between this and a 4.7 iPhone. Both are easier to hold and have similar viewable area.

All they have to do is drop the ears and make it straight all the way across and a lot of people (I know I would) would be fine with it. ZOMG but that would be called a bezel! We can't have that! It's 2017!

As for the screen... X area is still smaller than the Plus area... using simple math. Bezels or no bezels.

Can't help but wonder who was behind that horrible design decision.

Nothing wrong with being unique... but surely they could have come up with something better than that.

I like that it goes to the corners so I prefer the method Apple chose moving forward. Yea, I know it's a little smaller (12.79 for the X vs 12.85 for the Plus), but being all screen, OLED, higher resolution, and no chins makes it an easy trade off for me.

It's actually more like 12.3 when you discount the gesture/notch "safe area for app developers" using the above pic.

Either way... it was an easy pass for me, because the 8 Plus has the same storage and processor and all I'm missing out on are things I don't care about at the present time.. Face ID, OLED, Notch, narrow screen, dual OIS... etc... etc... etc...

12.79 is including the unusable space in the notch. The viewable area is 12.3.

Speaking from experience I can tell you the 8 Plus is a worth upgrade over the 6s (Plus). The battery life alone made it worth it for me not to mention the speed and other improvements. Waiting last year paid off this year.

As for justifying my decision to pass on the X... my mind was made up about 14 seconds after watching the keynote and I didn't even include the Face ID demonstration where I went "huh?" in my decision.

LOL
