I really wish they would update the iPad Air, waiting to see if updates are coming soon (guessing tho the Air will get the M2 when the iPad Pro gets the M3, which isn't happening this year apparently).

I also fiddled too long to get a Mac Mini M2 Pro this year, now I'm just going to wait until the M3 Pro is launched (whenever that happens).

On the parents' side, I told them to hold off from buying an iMac, the M1 in there is sufficient but they may as well just get the latest when it comes out to last longer (given Apple is on a 5-year support rule now).

I personally think the rest of 2023 will be relatively quiet. There may be a press release with a spec bump for some products. Who knows.

I'm really looking forward to the rumored OLED M3 iPad Pro next year!

Rather than introducing an M2 iMac this fall, it makes much more sense to wait until the base M3 chip is introduced and to release a bunch of M3 Macs together - think the 13" Macbook Airs (and maybe 15") and the Mac Mini. An M2 iMac released in October would just delay the M3 iMac.

Since apple are into gaming now , maybe an m1 powered Apple TV ?

If only …
Wouldn’t they use an A17Pro for an Apple TV?
In terms of performance, it’s pretty close to the M1, but with the new RT capabilities in the GPU.
Makes a lot more sense to me, especially since an Apple TV wouldn’t need the extra features of an M1 like thunderbolt controllers.
Plus, the A17Pro has hardware AV1 support, which is going to become pretty important for the future of streaming video, the main purpose of the Apple TV.
And if your response is “then just use an M3”, that product will exist and it’s called the Mac Mini.

Isn’t that what people want? Apple dominate a saturated market, even though they ALWAYS have the most popular phone and tablet and watch. But when they don’t come up with multiple revolutionary products every year, they say they boring or going through the motions. I find these people rather predictable and boring tbh.
To this point I would much rather a 2-year cycle for OS & Phone updates. The yearly improvements have become very minor YOY, and there seems to be zero interest in streamlining/perfecting the thing last released because they're already focusing on "next year". I would much rather have a faster, more stable and more bug-free OS than this 365 day mad stampede to the next "insert Northern California nature name here".

a 2 year cycle would also extend the hardware life to some extent. Rendering all this amazing equipment "legacy" after just 5 years is becoming a problem. Especially when it's so difficult to upgrade parts yourself.

I love my Apple products. They're all insanely good. I'd just like them to shift strategy a bit here. There's no pleasing some people, but I think a less harried release cycle, for most products, would solve a lot of these complaints.

The iMacs definitely need to be updated. They are almost 1,000 days old now. I’m waiting to buy a new one but not the one that’s currently being sold in stores. Way too outdated now.

As they usually start their upgrades with MacBook Air, I expect those will be 1st out with M3 too.
If it comes this year, ok, I might buy one this year.
If not, ok, I might wait to 2024 anyway.
My 2018 is holding up pretty ok for its tasks, and that is a good position - wanting a new Mac but not desperately need it.

You can do your own Pro Motion type setup. I have a 240Hz monitor connected to my Mac Studio.

You can, but not at 5k resolutions.

I guess I should have said I am looking for a Mac Studio that can do 5k/6k at 120Hz. May have to wait for Thunderbolt 5 on that one though.

Just waiting to see what the M3 mac studio brings, or if I'll have to stick with a PC for 3d work. I'll compromise some performance for quietness and less heat... but only so much.

A 1 year cycle year on year is minor to be sure. But people aren’t replacing them year on year. And they shouldn’t do that regardless imo (subjective choice). I don’t need a new phone every year, because they are so good. I am replacing my iPhone 12 Pro with the 15 Pro. I think it’s a big upgrade.

Maybe we are all just coming to terms with the reality that Apple products are meeting their zenith.
It's not just Apple.

The computing industry is now mature. It has gone through its birth, adolescence, and puberty in the 20th century, and here in the 21st century it is an adult.

Which means the computing industry is on a long plateau with fewer changes than when it was young.

The modern computer industry which you could say started with the Apple I 1976 and IBM PC (1981), 47 and 42. Those are still relatively young. But technically, the modern commercial computer industry started with the IBM 701 (1952) or ENIAC 1945 or TRIDAC from 1954 which was the first to have transistor. But I would say our traditional modern idea of computing with touch, point/click input method has reached its zenith.

And thus the Vision Pro is born.

What more can you do really?
Fix all the things they've neglected for years in their obsessive focus to deliver more 'features' as opposed to making any of those features functional, let alone good?

Also, bring back TouchID. Apple is so far behind on so many things in the phone world. Underscreen TouchID for instance. And FaceID is godawful on iPhones. It's just not a suitable technology for a phone, IMO.

Other than Siri, what do they need to fix? Blanket statements mean nothing.

FaceID works perfectly on my iPhone. Maybe it’s the user? TouchID on the iPad? Sure, but not on the iPhone.

I'm waiting for a new iMac, not because I think the M3 will be revolutionary (it will not be), but instead for Apple to accept that their base configurations and prices for upgrades are out of line with the current expectations.
Good luck, although I think you might have a longer wait for Apple to reconsider their pricing strategy. If Apple intended to do that they wouldn’t have to coordinate it with a processor update.

If you gave iPhone (2007) to someone in 1984, they would say everything has been resolved. Your requests while nice, are just icing on the cake at this point.

I guess that depends on what Apple’s internal roadmap is/was. If their goal is to release a new MacBook Air every 12-18 months and it takes them 24 months, they would probably consider that a failure themselves.
Most people that work at Apple aren’t privy to their roadmap, but you know? Got proof?

If I gave a gun (1914) to someone in the Neolithic era, they would say everything inadequate about the spear had been fixed. Fire rate and accuracy are just bodies on the pile at this point.

Really, Apple? You see drop in numbers from Mac sales? Gee, I wonder why. Could it be that you only have one AIO in your lineup with insides from 2021? No updates for 885 days. This is even worse delay than when they had Intel CPUs. It is the worst delay ever for an iMac. And you promised that with your own CPU architecture, the updates will come out much quicker.

They should've released an M2 iMac immediately after relasing other Macs with the same CPU.

They seem to have abandoned the iMac after the most recent (disappointing) iteration. Why did it have to be a desktop iPad, in base form? No fan and no Ethernet unless you spec up is a bad joke for a desktop. When you force schools to upgrade you know you under-specced it...
