With WWDC Five Months Away, What Do You Want to See in iOS 16?

"And with iPadOS 16 we have added a super advanced AI Safari sidebar that remembers your bookmark positions. It's the best sidebar we've ever created, and we think you're gonna love it!"

•iphone unified notification center so one page displays both notifications and widgets

•iphone ios 5 theme with original icons for preinstalled apps and metal notification center

A couple of things for me.

In photos I'd like the ability to have only selected albums (like my favourites) downloaded to device. Sometimes when you're trying to show someone a picture and it taking forever to download.. then they've lost interest!

On Android Messenger and a few apps can show 'bubbles' or 'chat heads', where you can minimise the conversation, drag it anywhere on the screen and then quickly open it when needed.

Number row on the keyboard! Why this isn't an option now I don't know. And the ability to resize the keyboard.

Allow some apps to continue working in the background. Spotify for example, stops downloading songs after a few mins. Google Photos stops uploading pictures etc.

Better customisation of the lock screen, control centre and notifications.

Samsung has a cool feature called Edge Lighting where the screen edges flash up in different colours depending on your notifications. It saves waking the whole phone screen up all the time. Don't know if it's possible or not with the iPhone.

100% time to unlock the app grid. Allow us to resize app icons etc. Maybe even rename, some of my apps have their name like 'LampUX...'

Also Moom and BetterSnapTool
Much prefer BetterSnapTool to Magnet. That said, having used Win 11 now there are elements that make it attractive, especially when disconnecting/ reconnecting from external screens. The quick placment of windows is good, not perfect, but something id like native to macos rather than an add-on via these utilities.

Always On Display… I can't believe that it's hard to do nor a battery concern especially given the mega-performance on the Pro Max. It should be a consumer choice and not what makes, or doesn't make, Apple look good.
How would they sell Apple Watches if you could check the time on your phone easily? ?

Agree with countless others on this thread that the mantra of iOS 16 should be:

‘Fix & optimise what’s already there’

No doubt AVR will be the exciting thing about WWDC so that clears the space for iOS 16 to be a little boring.

Having said that… I’m sure that there’s room for countless QoL fixes.

And by that, I mean simple things such as being able to specify how long timer alarms should sound for etc.

If there are any features in iOS I’d like that more to be in in iPadOS (the Mini’s scaling issues, lack of proper monitor support) and making the Mac work more like iOS/IPadOS.

At this point just stability in the software and a huge focus on performance and bug fixes. My wife is starting to grumble about removing the Hue bulbs and HomePods 'cause Siri fails so many times since iOS15. Just focus on "it just works" for a year.

I wanna also add: a proper ‘stability’ track/version that people can stay on and have their phones work well but still be secure etc.

14.8 was meant to have bug fixes but consumers were pushed to 15 nonetheless - when it clearly has stability / bug issues.

Or maybe Apple could just prioritise software stability over features, but I’m not sure if there’s that culture in Silicon Valley.

Each year it gets harder and harder, because most things I wanted are now in iOS (like widgets on Home Screen or screen sharing in FaceTime).

I guess split screen multitasking on iPhone and third party buttons for Control Centre would have been nice. And Playgrounds on iPhone. And the ability to select photos from Files and not from iCloud Photos.

Beside the strong focus on quality control and such, I would love to see the native iPadOS versions of Apple Calculator and Weather apps. I am so sick and fed up with the incessant advertisement banners found on the third-party weather and calculator apps. I don't even want to pay for them if Apple has free ones on iOS and macOS. Now, Jony Ives is gone from Apple, Inc., let's focus on what the consumers truly need rather than force us to accept his aesthetic concepts.

At first, I thought Apple finally bowed in and provided the native iPadOS version in the current iPadOS 15 when I saw the weather report in the home screen. Clicking it only leads to The Weather Channel website in Safari. Grr!

Another thing is the language switch for Apple Pencil to be set by the user rather than revert back to first language on the list after I relaunch the PDF documents. I often write in English due to lot of medical journals, and it's really frustrating when I have to tap on tiny dialogue box to select the language to English EVERY TIME!

•LTS version of iOS for stability and compatibility for older devices.
•Emoji changes not linked to new iOS versions but separate module update for older devices.
•RCS Messaging options for iMessage.
•Allow other phone apps.
•Ability to receive notifications from local Intranet services, ie local offline mode.
•IOS lite versions for older devices.
•Bring back downloadable apps to desktop.
•Desktop sync complete rewrite for faster backups speeds.
•Allow other iCloud alternatives as well as local intranet cloud solutions.
•More home page icon resize options than just zoomed and standard but also width and height adjustments.
•Be able to disable under app text like bottom launcher.
•Disable red counter number bubble on Setting app and App Store constant nagging.
•Ability to lock an app from updating and hide future App Store updates until unlocked.
•Seri conversation mode to ask second questions based on first question asked. ie always listening mode, passenger mode.
•Delete individual US Calendar holidays without having to make your own calendars.
•Cellular device to cellular device offline local private group communication and texting mode.

In decreasing order of desirability, this are my wishes for iOS 16.
Spoiler: no, I don't need a UI redesign.

1. Software improvements to Face ID algorithms to be able to unlock the devices with face masks on.
2. Always-on notifications on Lock Screen in OLED displays.
3. A special focus on system wide stability improvements and bug fixes.
4. Being able to change icons easily without having to use shortcuts.
5. Being able to select different video quality/resolution an other settings for Screen Recording.
6. True, interactive widgets, with different buttons and stuff.

I currently use Iphone 12 PRO with IOS 15.2

1.-More stability in AppleMusic like Spotify.
2.-More speed in IOS, it is very slow compared to Android
3.-Manual Airpods Updater - Airtag.

1-Privacy . Since Apple software only runs on apple hardware, why not make it open source? Maybe the code can be taken and altered to work on other hardware?

2- change the iOS altogether. Its crazy, but this Palm and Blackberry competitor OS has been modified enough to be turned in a frankenstein OS. A new refresh is needed like OS 9 -> OS X and Win 3.1 -> Win95. But Apple now will never change anything of their gold laying goose now, milk it to death. Gone are the days of Jobs where he builds something that makes it even better for the user than think how much EVEN MORE money we can make.

No new features. Fix the bugs and for the love of god put jiggle mode in the cold cold ground where it belongs.

And let me just put icons where I want them! Stop this everything at the top snapped to grid nonsense!

A “pro” mode that allows extensive customizations, macro scripting like tasker, and side loading of apps.

Also, a tablet version of MacOS for the iPad Pro. It’s ridiculous how limited iPadOS is.

Some of us actually want to put our devices to work and not simply watch videos on TikTok all day.

A complete rebuild from the ground up. iOS 15 is just iOS 7 stretched over a larger area. 7 wasn't meant for 6"+ screens and many of its interactions and features are a fudge on modern phones. To this end:

1. All user interaction with the main OS confined to the bottom 40% of the display.
2. A screen-edge 'back' swipe replacing the current shortcut which is at the opposite end of the screen to your thumb (like Android)
3. A redesigned 'wallet' screen featuring control centre on the bottom half and cards at the top
4. Subtle bottom-up 'toast' notifications when the screen is unlocked in a similar vein to webOS
5. The notification screen itself redesigned to sit to the left of the homescreen, an area of no use since we got go-anywhere widgets.
6. The ability to put icons and widgets anywhere on the homescreen instead of having them float to the top, away from your thumbs
7. An 'icon' widget where I can keep 2 rows of app shortcuts at the bottom of my screen but swipe through stacks of them like a widget stack, eliminating the need for multiple homescreens and keeping all apps within reach of my thumb.
8. The ability to customise double-tap and hold abilities of the power button thus opening iOS up to the use of Google Assistant or Alexa in place of Siri if you wished.
9. Complete control of all default apps
10. 100% support for game streaming apps without the need for a crappy web browser interface or Apple's insistence that the game testing that goes on at Xbox et al is somehow not up to scratch
11. NFC interactions opened up so I can scan tags and trigger different things
12. On-device photogrammetry API without needing a web connection
13. Full manual controls over the camera. This has been a sticking point for iOS for too long, particularly as alleged 'Pro' devices do not actually give the user professional controls. Paying an expensive subscription to a developer like Halide is not a solution.
14. An always-on screen for OLED devices
15. Gesture controls for FaceID devices. Useful when your phone is sat on a desk or a charging stand. Apple brought the company that made Kinect for FaceID so it should be possible. Gesture control API for developers.
16. A redesign of all internal apps for the bottom 40% interaction area. All search areas etc at the bottom of screens.
17. Spotlight commands on the lockscreen: swipe down to start typing and see a list of things to do (send tweet, message person x etc) justy like webOS 'just type'.
18. Siri API for developers so they can program back in shortcuts "Hey Siri, order me an Uber" etc
19. Quick settings to appear as a dock on the app switcher screen. This would be customisable. Swipe left on the dock to make this appear on the homescreen
20. British motorway junction numbers on Apple Maps. Without this simple addition its pretty useless for driving in the UK
