I think people who are hoping for a complete redesign of iOS are going to be severely disappointed, because I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.
People forget that iOS is an operating system used by millions and millions, if not at this point billions of people, and the vast majority of those people expect to turn on their phones and have them work just as they did the previous day every single time.
It’s not just people making fan concepts and such using these devices, it’s also children, school districts, grandmothers and grandpas, great grandparents, etc Who rely on their phones to work just as they would expect.
iOS 6 to 7 was one thing, the iPhone was still growing, there were still tons and tons of first time smart phone purchasers, it made sense for the device to try to look more modern and up with the times. Not to mention, the iPad wasn’t even three years old, a lot of people had them but they weren’t universal like they are now. not to mention, in 2012 there was a complete leader ship change at Apple, so it made sense for them to go in a little bit of a different direction.
Now? In 2022? It makes absolutely no sense for them to do any such thing.
The only result is tons of complaints from unhappy customers who wake up one morning with their phone looking completely different.
Now, I can see them tweaking small parts of the operating system, just like they do every other year. A new icon here, A new toggle there, a deeper shade of blue used here, The controls rearranged here, slightly less transparency there, but as for a complete redesign? No.
I think 2022 is going to be all about the glasses, and I completely expect all of the other operating systems to take a major backseat to the glasses.
Just like when the original iPhone launched in 2007, and Apple moved tons of its resources from the Mac and iPod to make sure the iPhone launch was absolutely perfect.
It’s clear that Apple thinks that AR is the future, and that’s going to be the major, major focus of wwdc this year
