My pipe dream is that Leopard is going to be a totally 3d gui riding on quartz and core animation tech.

Apple has been working with Sun microsystems to get ZFS into 10.5.. sun did a sweet demo of a 3d GUI a few years ago so I can hope that maybe ZFS isn't it for collaboration. I'm really hoping the GUI is significantly different not just a new brushed brass metal skin. Though at the end of the day ZFS and full 64bit is enough to satisfy me.

Also hoping the Mac Pro gets some love. I'm one of those ppl that dosent count the 8-core as an update.

So if Steve gets on stage, puts his hands together, and performs twinkle twinkle little star on a comb with wax paper on it. But His hands together once more, and walks off stage you won't be disappointed. :p

To be very honest... that would be alot better then some watered down feature set and more dam iphone news... in fact, would be quite fun:D

My $0.02

Two things I find encouraging for the WWDC are: Apple has recently updated (slightly) the Mac Pro's to 8 core, Apple has updated the Mac Book Pro. It seems unlikely that Apple would update the MBPs this week.

What does that mean? It means Apple usually has some announcements at the WWDC, usually more pro focused. If those were the ONLY announcements that Apple had available to make they would probably have held them off.

One therefore wonders what Apple has in store for everyone this year?
* Further Mac Pro announcements? This is most likely in my book based on history and the current state of the Mac Pro's. To me the last update doesn't qualify as an Mac Pro update, more of a stop-gap, easily added option.
* Is it Leopard? Doubtful that it would be a Leopard shipping announcement since Apple just said it was delayed.
* Leopard features? Sure they'll be discussed and devs will get DVDs, but without something truly amazing it won't be the full focus. Perhaps they are amazing, but I don't think that is enough of an announcement to be the main focus, "wow" factor. If the features ARE amazing enough, great, but that seems less likely...unless there is nothing else left to fall back on. And the fact that MBPs were updated last week when they could've been part of a bigger presentation makes me think they had a lot on their plate already.
* ZFS? Doubtful.Lol. Something else with Sun? Perhaps.
* iPods - doubtful since history is against it. It could be iPhone-family related (e.g. extending the line or moving features into other iPod type products. That is more likely to me.)
* iPhone related? Doubtful since that was covered in January and it will be coming for real in a few weeks.
* iPhone dev kit? For devs, great. For the "wow" factor, a non-event.While nice, it isn't something that Steve would say "one more thing" about.
* iMac? Perhaps. History is against it based on previous timing, but as the non-focal point, perhaps some updates, but after the MBPs last week kind of ho-hum.
* Mac Books? Possibly, but I think they would have timed it with MBs announced before the WWDC and MB Pros at it unless there are seriously amazing upgrades which I doubt. Usually WWDC is more pro oriented and if the upgrades were equivalent or close I think the reverse or concurrent release would be most likely.
* Displays? Probably will announce in the next 6 months, perhaps at WWDC, but are they a 'big enough' announcment? Maybe if they have built-in iSight, multi-touch and/or LED (not likely). A multi-touch display that can be vertical or horizontal would be a wow factor. E.g. a display that can rotate to be flat on your desk for multi-touch use or upright.
* A touch based tablet? Wild card.
* Boot camp/Windows related. Doubtful. I really don't think that integrating Windows APIs so that you can run Windows apps in the Mac OS itself is something that would be good for Apple. Yes, in the short run it would be good, I think Apple would have to worry about people relying on that instead of direct development. I could be wrong though!
* xserves. Likely given the lack of the dual quad core option there. (Mac Pro's currently have available only 1/2 the memory of xserves, so that is another reason the MPs are due).
* iLife: likely.

What is the big announcment then? Will there be one? We'll know soon enough. :)

Yes! How about new ACD that uses multi-touch??? Plus built-in iSight that can zoom or pan without moving the display.

Right on! I will definitely like to see multi-touch. Nice features in future macs. may be they can start with ACD and iMacs and then later bring to notebooks too. Later on (may be Macworld 2008) bring out ultraportable multitouch too (by then multi-touch leopard will be out; they would have gauged usage of multi-touch iPhone). Hope it is not wishful thinking!:)

Damn that phone

Ugh. Agreed!
Don't get me wrong: I am excited about the iPhone and interested to see how it will evolve & mature. My VZW contract is up Aug 5, and I'll know a LOT more about the iPhone by then. Waiting to hear the "real world" reviews, AT&T plans/contracts, etc.

But dag, yo... I am much more in need of new hardware. Both my G4/500 and iBook/500 are really showing their age. Meaning, as the OS has evolved/expanded, these Macs are now less and less able to handle even basic/everyday tasks. And at this stage of the game, I'm not buying new hardware until Leopard is bundled. Fort whatever reason, I feel that holding off on Leopard means I'll get more mileage out of my hardware (tho, unsure the relevance of that logic) when I do make the plunge (a MacBook, MacBook Pro & Airport Extreme).

When Leopard got bumped to October, my head dropped. It threw a little kink in my plan.
And it was such a good plan... on paper - get my Macs all updated now (and with Leopard) and then add an iPhone in the fall. Oh well...

Still looking forward to learning more about Leopard tomorrow.
While the potential is there to "wow," I kind of get the feeling it will be underwhelming.
But I have been wrong in the past... like, almost every single time. :p

Err, no it's not.

Aqua does need a makeover/replacing though, won't find m/any dissenters on that.

Well, iTunes 7 is a step into a new GUI. I just want all the apps to have the iTunes 7 scrollbar and unified look. Illuminous GUI will be awsome to see and I believe it's true, Apple will replace Aqua with Illuminous in Leopard. I also believe that Leopard will have some universe elements to it, something from Time Machine. That would be very awsome.

I think Leopard will be announced to have Mulit-Touch compatibility.

Steve himself said that the iPhone "is running the full Mac OS X", which we know is Leopard. He just took out every "sound file, desktop wallpaper, etc". So, although we have known it for quite some time, it could officially be announced at WWDC.

This dude has way too much time on his hands...:p

Call me a pessimist, but does anyone else feel like this won't be a very exciting WWDC? Especially the "secret features." I'm still skeptical about that one.

Something tells me that there is still work to be done on Leopard. Apple is barely making its deadlines on iPhone.... OR, Leopard is as done is it will be, and it will be ready to go tomorrow.

After all, if they are ready to show the full features of Leopard, why can't they release it? If there is more debugging to do, then there is a chance that the feature will not be ready for October. So Apple has to either release Leopard tomorrow (early), or hold back on some features that they haven't finished implementing or debugging, for fear that they won't be ready to go in October.

Therefore my prediction is that Steve will not give away all the "secret features" saving some for October, since he is unsure they will be ready for release. Or Steve will say, Leopard is available today.

iWork and iLife

Where is the love for these 2 items. These are things I am very interested in, that are way over due, and that I use everyday. Not to mention they stopped shipping iWork a few days ago. I'm hoping for some MAJOR updates to iWork, that would get me very excited, especially if they were drunk enough to include it with Leopard.

Top Secrets:
It looks like ZFS was definitely one of them (but now the cat is out of the bag).

Nope... ZFS was know to be available (not in a finished form mind you) since one of the first or second developer releases of 10.5... As for the speculation that ZFS has become the 'default' filesystem for OS X ... Do yourself a favor and don't believe the hype... Nobody and I mean NOBODY in their right mind would ever make a switch as important as the default FS with a filesystem that has absolutely NO track record to speak of... On any OS.

Look at how long HFS has been around and then look how long it was till HFS+ came out... trust me, moving to a new FS is not something that happens overnight... ZFS would have to have a track record of a year (years) of reliable service before the default FS crown is removed from the head of HFS+.

Not that I'm an HFS+ fan (is anyone?) but I'm just being realistic... :)

After all, if they are ready to show the full features of Leopard, why can't they release it?
Because Leopard hasn't gone through the usual cycle of developer seeds through to release candidate and gold master. This takes a few months. IIRc there's not been a developer seed (beta release) of Leopard for ages.

All features, secret or otherwise, will need to be beta tested. And Apple can't beta test a secret feature and keep it secret. And for an October release, beta testing needs to kick off pronto in anger. Therefore, my guess is that we'll hear about all of Leopard's features tomorrow, secret or otherwise.

Imagine the egg on Apple's face if Leopard's secret features didn't actually work properly come October! Steve must make sure that everything is Beta'd carefully.

Things that don't add up

No hardware announcements? So Steve is going to spend 3 hours talking about Leopard? The imacs and mini's are well past there refresh cycle despite the hardware to update them are available, the imacs have always been on par with the MBPs and the mini's MBs. Steve is going to present Leopard on old hardware imacs(or exculsively MPs/MBPs)? If there isn't any hardware anouncements would be wait until Sept/Nov(whenever Leopard is announced) for updates, why would he wait after the Dev conference to announce speedbumps that he could anounce now and use during the conference?

Things arn't adding up to me, so there has to be hardware announcements 2marrow just my 2c. Now I know this is suppose to be a Developers conference, but is there really any other time close that Apple could use to demostrate new macs?

well for one...the keynote isn't 3 hours...its 1 1/2 hours. and i dont know about new macs...the macbook and macbook pro were just updated so those are out. but maybe new iMacs. im hoping for new macs :)

New iMacs a-comin'

New iMac design will be announced and shown at WWDC, but not available for immediate shipping.

New iMac is gonna be "One more thing..."

You nay-sayers just wait and see. Years ago TS was the bomb, then they bombed big time, and now they got the goods again.
