Apple is literally destroying it's credibility by following this asinine path, the MBP was once universally praised, now we see professional's and long term users dropping the platform, for what to impress the shallow. This iteration of the MBP has to be the worst and most problematic since it's inception in 2006.

Apple's apology is little more than a shallow sales and marketing tactic to mask the extent if the issue. As said we don't want apologies, we want action. Something Apple and the Mac has been devoid of for a very long time...

Frankly as long as Apple meets it's production and revenue targets for the Mac it clearly could care less as that's the only logical way to explain the current mess.

Q-6

People like me, that have lived their lives in the DOS/Windows world and are now looking at Macs due to them having a *nix shell and very good reputation, some of us are now turned away - instead looking at Linux on Lenovo as an option.

Amazing.

People don't want apologies, people don't want to think about whether their keyboard will fail

I echo the sentiment from D2D, instead of offering an apology, and sticking with a failed and flawed design apple needs to do something

if you finish reading my post, you will realise that my sentiments echo yours. maybe i should have been clearer. btw i advised my gf to get a lenovo

Unfortunately my fear is their spin will be “people only want iPads” and just let the Mac line wither.

That may well be the case. Apple’s biggest segment is iPhones and iPad by far, they don’t exactly make much selling full fledged personal computers these days. (Or so I read).

Yeah, that's my thinking as well. I've largely given up on a Mac, and I'm largely a windows only household. I still have an iMac but that's now being used by my kids for their homework and videos and what not.

I think what’s most disheartening is that these machines are fine (for me at least) on paper. They literally just need to reasonably reliably do what they advertise and I’d be fine.

It’s just so absurd that computers have gotten so powerful but hamstrung by things like “the keyboard works” and “it doesn’t crash constantly”

If they can fix most problems and get rid of the TB, then I might get a new MBP. It would be easier with two backup systems.

Most people I know would buy a mac instantly if Apple dumped the butterfly keyboard (at least for some models) and went back to GREAT keyboards, as well as dumped the TB. That would possible make it able for them to lower the price to reasonable levels. Knowing Apple, I fear any redesigned keyboard (which I am not expecting, to be honest) will be made even more expensive.

I just want an Air/Pro with a great keyboard, dammit. MacOS, superior screen, great keyboard and QUALITY,

I would use an external keyboard if Apple didn't fix the keyboard. It would be a bit of a pain to carry around but I need reliability. I just need to know that the issues that could cause potential failure are resolved.

Well, I have been using and deploying Windows in enterprise settings for a long, long, long time. The issue of "reliability" is usually not there for enterprise use when selecting proper HW. Still cheaper than mac, as reliable etc.

But it is Windows 10, and I would really like to be able to skip W10. Not enough to carry around a portable keyboard for my portable computer, however.

Our 2015 Macs at work are bulletproof. So are the Lenovos. I really do not like W10 though I could live with it. I have a personal W10 i7 at the office and one at home. I am planning on bringing the desktop home and I've already stopped using the one at home and am thinking of selling them, giving them away or sticking them in a corner in the basement. I find that one MacBook Pro can easily replace the desktops and I like macOS a lot more. Some of that is because I use iPads and iPhones but some of it is because Unix is native.

I don't carry a portable keyboard around with me today because I don't need to. I would, though, if I had a MBP with Touchbar and and unreliable keyboard. I use emacs a lot and need a physical escape key. I'd guess that Apple developers would do the same thing. I suppose I could look while I type but I'd rather not and it would slow me down.

I would actually ignore most of my Windows machines if I had a 2015 Macbook Pro. However, getting one at this tiem for a premium price just feels so off to me.

I'm really considering a new computer soon (my MacBook Pro is more than 5 years old) but I'm very weary of spending this much money on something so unreliable. I have had issues with my current MacBook Pro and the one before as well. Both had swollen batteries and other issues, some which Apple fixed, some which it didn't. Repairs are always very, very expensive and hardly ever worth it, so usually if it breaks, it's best to just buy a new one. But I can't afford to buy a new MacBook Pro every 3 years as it takes that much time to save up for one – but they get more expensive with every release. So there's an extra year or two when I'm not covered (can't afford a MBP yet but no more AppleCare either).

Unfortunately Apple does not offer alternatives. If you need a decently powerful laptop, they only have one option, and if you want to future-proof it (32 GB of RAM) then you need to spend a lot more money. 16GB of RAM probably won't be enough for professional use in 2024.

I feel like there is a huge risk in buying these machines, despite Apple being a big name, I still don't feel like I can trust them or rely on them fixing their own mistakes.

I really, really don't want to go back to Windows. So I feel kind of stuck. I will use my current machine for as long as I possibly can, and then I don't know what will happen. It's sad that there is no competition, no other brands or operating systems appearing on the market, allowing Apple to just continue raising their prices and lowering their quality, knowing that even if people are no longer happy with their products, they will still buy them anyway.

There were a number of them for reasonable prices in the recent past but the shops have bought them up and are charging ridiculous prices for them now. If Apple does fix the issues in 2019, expect the 2015 prices to drop sharply.

No. I'll buy a MacBook pro 2015 in June once the new machines are out, and wait a year to two years for version two of the new laptops, once they fix the display cable issues and the keyboard. The ports aren't a problem for me, or how thin they are. The keyboard is. If they fixed the keyboard, the new machines are great, but the keyboard is too big of an issue for me to buy or recommend buying

What will you do if there are no new machines in June?

I had a 15" 2015 MacBook Pro and it was very nice, however it's 22nm cpu did heat up quite dramatically under load. That being said it is still very capable.

I'm very fustrated with my 2018 Macbook Pro compared to my 2015.

The 2018 surfs much slower when connected to the internet via iPhone tethering which is how I connect 90% of the time.

The color accuracy of the screen of my 2018 is much worse which means it's impossible to adjust the colors and white balance of my photos and videos properly.

The lack of an SD card slot and USB ports are daily fustrations because I am constantly misplacing /losing the required "dongles" and the dongle connections themselves wear out from constant connecting and disconnecting.

If the 2015's were still available for sale I'd buy them.

You probably know this but just to make sure: have you disabled True Tone before adjusting your photos? Basically all reviews are saying, that the color accuracy of the 2016-2018 MBPs is among the best in class.

You have the nTB Pro right? That has a 2x2 antenna setup vs the 3x3 in the other Pros (including 2015s). The wifi is 66% of the speed of the speed of your 2015.

I'll buy a 2015 13 inch either way in June, and then just wait it out. My main machine is an iMac, so either way it doesn't as much. If they keep making terrible laptops because of their keyboards, I may end up doing something drastic in a few years, like getting a MacBook air base model with the bad keyboard, and then a thinkpad x1 carbon for my away from home work. I'd do all the writing and work work (photoshop) on the x1, and then transfer over to the bad MacBook for the final steps that are mac only based. It's funny too, this iMac that i'm writing this on is my favorite apple device I've ever used as a main computer. It's a 2015 and it's still fast as hell and I love it for work :) just wish they'd fix the damn keyboards for the laptops.

I have to ask because of all the garbage I’m reading on MR about the ‘18 MBPs like keyboard issues, thermal issues, screen flickering, flexgate etc. etc. The list is a little alarming to say the least. So would you feel comfortable buying a new MBP today?

Yes I am a bit concerned. I've been debating upgrading my late 2013 13" rMBP which is still running fine to a 15" refurb on the apple site.

BUT

I've heard a lot of things and am concerned. The last thing I want is the tool I use so much to give me trouble...

"Ain't nobody got time for that!" lol

I wouldn’t buy a new one, but have in the last couple of weeks had to buy a MBP for a specific project for a client. I considered a refurb 2018 15”, but in the end picked up a used 2017, 15” model instead. I had no qualms about doing that as the values have settled now and with the extended keyboard repair programme it seems fairly low risk.

I would find it hard to recommend buying a new MBP though, especially with rumours about a redesign this year.

You’re independently wealthy (at least you imply that with every thread you post in PRSI); so I wouldn’t stress. If it breaks, I’m sure you can afford to just replace it.

Make sure you have good backups of all your files and put all that cash to good use!
[doublepost=1554140554][/doublepost]Can I just say that I’m absolutely in love with my 2018 15”; I know that’s no secret, but it’s been a few months, still zero issues. I dabble in video as a hobby and bought the machine for that. I just finished cutting my first video over the weekend, this machine and FCPX is a joy to use for that!

No regrets, hopefully it stays that way.
