The reality is touch ID is not going to be coming back or implemented under the display, as Face ID is Apple's future as it stands. It's not just about the iPhone anymore with Face ID, As it will expand into other products like the iPad and MacBook. So the iPhone X is just the beginning.

Given the incredible performance Face ID has exhibited thus far, it seems as if any further investment in Touch ID may be a waste of money.

Though I don’t have an X, I’d be happy to go with faceID going forward if Apple can make improvements similar to Touch ID version 1 > 2... which I’m pretty sure they will do.

Once you actually use FaceID, rather than judging it without trying it, you will never miss touch ID again.
It feels beautiful how your device actually "recognizes" you. Give it a personality.
In addition of course to not showing notifications to anyone but me, is a life saver if you have an insecure gf.

Nope. As much as I loved Touch ID.
I would rather have them focus on improving Face ID, rather then having to many stuff that do the same thing, packed in the phone.

I agree. I understand why Apple have done this, but the option to choose would be ideal. Let by default swipe up to unlock and if people want it home screen direct after face ID scan, they should be able to unable that. Perhaps that will come on a future updates.

Thats because you held the phone too close to your face during setup. Lol! It wont recognize you at odd angles if you do that.

Apple is withholding this so people will beg for it and Apple will present it like a feature at WWDC next year when iOS 12 is announced.
For me, Face ID is just so fluid. When I pick my phone up, my thumb just goes straight to the bottom of the screen to swipe up and the motion just feels so natural. Also, if Face ID does fail (which it doesn't all that often) I really do not have any gripes in entering my pass code. I entered a pass code for years before Touch ID. I had no qualms then and I have no qualms now.
Either way, having to swipe up or enter a pass code in the event of Face ID failure really does not impact me in the slightest. As long as a) my device is secure and b) can be unlocked by me when I need it, I really don't care the about the method too much.

I'm getting used to the buttonless action of the X, and its nice, but FaceID is not a consistent technology, at least for me it isn't. Just last night I had to type in my code after trying to get faceid to unlock times. Basically it took 3 attempts (two faceids and one entering the passcode) to unlock my phon, whereas TouchID would have done it immediately.
I'm hoping a future update to iOS will help improve the accuracy and consistency but for now its not a consistent technology

You don’t have to “stare then swipe”. Swipe as soon as you pick up and look at it. I also don’t need to pick up my phone for Face ID to work (but yes, obviously it needs to see my face in the vicinity). Have you tried turning off the attention required setting?

I don’t get this argument. When I swipe up with any finger it is still just one gesture or “action”. I am not trying to place any finger carefully in a spot before swiping up. It does not even have to be a very committed swipe.
I honestly wonder how some people here manage to operate a fork or spoon with how much they try and make a swiping gesture out to be soooo much more work than Touch ID.

Yeah, I am not sure why it is not working for you then. Mine does not work at extreme angles, but it does work at angles.

After a few days with the iPhone X, I don’t even think about Touch ID anymore. It truly is inferior.
Face ID is implemented so well it just works without thinking and even looking.
Just pull the phone out and swipe up, Face ID will recognize your face way before you are ready to do anything with the phone.
It’s great!

I don't see how that's possible. With Touch ID, I pick up my phone with the habitual thumb placement and it's unlocked before I even look at it. I don't have to swipe after picking it up. I know the time differences are minimal but they surely mount up in everyday use.
You can pick up and swipe at same time too. I just don’t understand why this is so hard to understand, lol. I have small hands and have no problem doing this one handed. It can be swiped before I even look at it (and whether using Touch ID or Face ID you are going to look at it).
I mean most of us using Face ID are very familiar with how Touch ID works. We used it for years. We have a pretty good comparison to work from here.
You have developed a habitual thumb placement. One can just as easily develop a habitual swipe.
Bonus for me is I do not accidentally start Siri anymore (I used to do that all the time with Touch ID for whatever reason). Now that adds time! And yes, I fully accept that was operator error 😉

Try FaceID for a day or two. I doubt you will bring up TouchID again. FaceID, in my opinion, works much more seamlessly. I barely notice it.

Exactly. Touch ID was once new and the naysayers were out in full force. Now Face ID is out and the naysayers are out in full force.
I mean, I guarantee even children would grasp the concept of Face ID quite quickly if you handed them an X and mapped their Face. I would be embarrassed as an adult to be talking about how much more work Face ID is over Touch ID.
