Sigh.
Yet another example of embracing something over another despite the “something” is not superior in nearly every way, albeit in a lower degree. Touch ID, as a form of biometric data source, does not expose privacy as Face ID does. Can be used in complete darkness (Face ID with infrared light can also do that) and blind (just touch the button with registered finger and done). Unique.
The demo phone tryout tells me Face ID does not reach its prime time. Unable to unlock in more angle. Can not unlock device without user looking at it. Does not work in landscape (which could be fixed through software update). Overall slower. Apple is likely rushing out Face ID for the sake of this anniversary phone.
I will patiently wait another year and see how Apple will improve Face ID.

They choose to not go back, not that they cannot. And, they might eventually go back if People are not happy with their decision. But judging by their current position, I agree with your comment.
And able to use it blind (not staring at the phone but still can unlock, which is impossible lol). And add more faces (seriously). And remove all shenanigans during the unlock process to make it work faster.

It’s usabke without staring at it. You just have to allow that in settings.
I don’t personally find it any slower than Touch ID but there are scenarios I’ve read, none of which I apparently practice, where that case is plausible.
I was honestly relatively reluctant to embrace this tech before I had it in my hands, but for my use, I don’t have any complaints. Additional faces would be nice, but not necessary.
Obviously those that do have specific use scenarios are going to have issues. The most common one is reading alerts in the desk. I now set my phone on a Qi stand and it works a treat both charging the device and seeing my face. For me, that’s not a compromise. The phone sits in the same left hand corner of the desk. The added bonus is I keep it topped off without fiddling with a cable.

Nope, Touch ID is old Tech. No going back.

I think having a way to unlock with a fingerprint is always going to have its uses. Call me old fashioned but cutting edge doesn't always have to include removing an old tried and true. Just my opinion anyways.
FaceID is good as far as I am concern. That is why Apple leave iPhone 8 with touchID for those that want to use and preferred TouchID while new device has a different way of doing thing. I think, iPhone X is not for everyone and people has the ability to pick the way they are used to say iPhone 8/+.
I agree it would be nice to add more faces but you do not have to STARE at your phone to unlock it.
Really, I have had my X a week and Face ID is seamless. I do not understand why so many people who do not have an X are writing as if it takes some super human effort. It is good enough there is no thinking about it; my phone is unlocked before I even am thinking about it. Looking at the phone is something you are going to do, so this need to unlock “blind” is a mystery to me.
You can swipe ahead of time and then lock if it is that important I guess to do something before you look at your phone.
I’d happily do away with Touch ID and go Face ID right now on all my iPads too.

So you think 1:50,000 is more secure than 1:1,000,000? Because that is what it comes down to.
Do you have an identical twin? I don’t, so I am quite comfortable taking risk of 1:1,000,000 versus 1:50,000.

Well, similar to iPhone 5s, this iPhone won’t have perfect Face ID whatsoever. Assuming Apple is uploading all captured biometric data to the government, the only hope is the thing works a bit better and faster in the next generation. iPhone 6s Plus with Touch ID and headphone jack for another year.

I was thinking that myself! Why remove the horse from the buggy, just to replace it with an engine?!? Tried and true!
Also, why use electricity to cool food? Using blocks of ice in the ice chest work just as well. Plus, you can take a small piece and use it to cool of a drink! Tried and true!

WTF?!? 1) They said they aren't, 2) This sounds more like paranoia than anything else, and 3) Have you gone into public? Your likeness can be captured in public without you ever consenting/knowing. It's 100% legal. If the government wanted a photo of you, they could get it ANYTIME they wanted. Or, you know, by getting a copy of your drivers license...

There is no need to stare at your iPhone when you need to unlock with TouchID. This is how I wake up and silence the iPhone alarm and I just stumble and grab my iPhone and touch into the Home Button. Easy. No need for me to even fully open my eyes and stare at the phone, since I'm still half asleep. This even happens in the very early dark hours of a winter morning. And TouchID would be horrible in this situation.

I wouldn't mind both (even if you had to pick one or the other) however I like the idea of FaceID better, I like the additional functionality it does and can offer in the future and I like a higher level of security (supposedly).
After seeing the iPhone X in use, moving forward I'm on board with the idea of FaceID.
That said, I think I could operate and use an iPhone better and faster if it unlocked by putting my fingers anywhere on the screen. This may come with some hurdles software wise like inadvertently activating things like ApplePay but I'm sure Apple could work out those details.

i don't think it's possible to put it under the screen
technical difficulties aside, i don't know how you'd know where to put your finger? either they put an indent into the screen (which is going to be annoying/distracting when your doing anything else with the phone other than unlocking it) or there's a circle either drawn on the glass, or the software draws it - and then you're going to need to look at the phone to see where that circle is, and then it's no better than FaceId requiring you to look at the screen also.
Plus, with FaceId you can pickup the phone and swipe up before you've looked at it - and then FaceId waits for your glance at the screen and unlocks immediately. That's the same process as with TouchId, just in a different order

Good news...I can open my phone on the very early dark hours without my eyes fully open staring at my phone, and a cat walking in between me and my phone, as well. Turn off “attention required”.
I like Face ID and it seems to be very reliable - more so than Touch ID under some circumstances. I do prefer the button gestures than some of the new swipe gestures. It would be great to have face-id and some sort of touch (not fingerprint or security) to do some of the other things but I think this setup will be fine with more time.
