I think a combination of both would be best. Face ID is great when holding the phone out and about but if I'm at my desk and want to unlock the phone when its flat down facing the ceiling I cant do as easily anymore.

Do you mind if I ask, why? Without the tactile feedback of a home (or other) button what would make TouchID under the glass an attractive option? I could see if you could touch the screen anywhere and, boom, it recognizes any of your fingers. But if you have to touch a specific spot, I see TouchID under the screen a big pain in actual use.

Obviously this is all speculation, but touch id under the screen I'd imagine would have haptic feedback and be relegated to an area, probably the bottom portion of the phone. I wouldn't expect the entire screen be the area, but the bottom portion possibly, yes. Face ID feels rushed somewhat to me, with it not working in landscape, limited angle effectiveness, problems with certain lighting and sunglasses. My Oakleys work ok with it, whereas my RayBans do not.
I should clarify, my big issue is mainly the UI change w/the home button removal. Face ID and removing the home meant Apple changed the UI and imo did some ill-conceived things, like moving CC to a swipe from the top right corner of a phone they made taller. It's harder for one-handed use to access now, and if you're left handed, I'd imagine now you mostly must use two hands now just to get to CC. CC at the bottom meant basically anyone could access it one handed. Notifications on the left top now reveal the same issues as the new CC. The status bar used to be where you could view lots of information. Now to view basic things like carrier info (wifi calling status), battery percentage, etc you have to navigate to view that info. Those "ears" means Apple can claim 5.8 inch screen, but it's not really usable space at all. Video gets software bezels that are pronounced on all 4 sides and if you zoomed in it looks disjointed with the notch. Seems like Apple did the change to CC and notifications just to justify that "yes, you can use that space up there''.
The home bar is always there, in every app, to the point where it blocks text in safari.
If you wanted to move ahead with Face ID that's fine, but at least make that home bar a force touch home button. Doing that means CC doesn't have to change, notifications doesn't have to change, multitasking view didn't have to change. It's still somewhat coherent with how the rest of its ios lineup works as well. They supposedly invested so much into force touch and that haptic engine (thus removing the hp jack), yet something as common sense thinking like making the home bar a 3d touch home button and preserving some UI consistency seems out of their realm of thinking.

That would INCREASE the chances of someone breaking into your phone. So you'd go from 1:1,000,000 for FaceID to 1:50,000 for TouchID.
You'd be 20x LESS secure than if you simply didn't add TouchID.

Yes. My iPhone sits in a dock on my desk for most of the day. Unless I tilt the iPhone X backwards or lower my head down to the level of the Face ID sensor, the phone does not unlock. I'm so used to being able to just touch my thumb to the home button and not have to worry about the position of the phone. I'll give it another day or two, but I'm leaning towards exchanging for the 8 Plus.

after about 2.5 days with the X, i do not miss Touch ID. Face ID is just easier, especially when an app enables it in lieu of a password. No need to move the thumb back down
If you reset FaceID and set it up with the phone lower (like when you actually use it) it will unlock fine from an almost standing straight up dock position. Also helps when its flat on the table.

I'd say that's pretty minor for the majority of people.
There was trade off's when moving to Face ID. Each have their pro's and con's.
After a few days of using FaceID now, I still can't say which one is "better". It's rare I need to see my phone without having my face easily in front of it.

That's the one thing I didn't really get. Lots of people seem to need to unlock without looking at their phone. I don't see why I would need to do that. Face ID has been working great for me so far and will only get better.

Id rather risk it with a family member be able to unlock via touch ID with a random person.

Just because twins aren't the norm doesn't change the fact. Additionally I've never seen a video of Touch ID being fooled. I have seen a video of Face ID being fooled. In terms of real world usages Touch ID is superior in security.
That identical twins aren't the norm IS the important fact that makes Face ID "superior in security".
So just because you have not bothered to google "Touch ID fooled" to watch all the many videos out there, you think it is proof that it is less foolproof than Face ID; the latter of which is most definitely more secure as most people do not have evil identical twins running around out there.
Have fun now actually looking up how Touch ID has been fooled, watching the videos, and reading all the horror stories when Touch ID came out about how it was susceptible to Play Doh, fake fingers, and nipples.
It really is getting ridiculous how far some on here will go to make up facts, and just pretend others don't exist at all, to put down the X. It is laughable that you try and claim that 1:50,000 is superior in security than 1:1,000,000, on the basis that you did not bother looking for any videos.

The 1st gen release of FaceID is hit or miss. Looking forward to software updates this year.
FaceID has a much higher ceiling than TouchID, but in its current state I like TouchID better.
There’s no way Apple brings back TouchID. They’re all in on FaceID. I imagine most of my qualms with it will be addressed in the next few iterations. It’s really an exciting piece of tech.

Lol, how could you compare a mold of a fingerprint that someone has on hand to a legitimate use case of a twin? I have never seen a video of Touch ID generically allowing someone to use their own finger print on someone else’s device. Meanwhile that is the case for the X. Please show me a video proving me wrong and I’ll gladly admit to it. But I don’t see how having a mold or assigning your nipple are the same.

My X is due to arrive in 4 days but I have been playing with some demo X's as well as Note 8's for a decent amount of time. Although I am really looking forward to MY X arriving (X not EX lol), it was a tough choice between it and the Note 8.
But one thing is for sure: I do not like the Note 8's fingerprint reader which is right next to the rear camera, and not really recessed. My current LG V20 also has a rear fingerprint reader, but it is in the middle, and nicely recessed. My finger just lands on it without thinking. I can tell it will be more of a chore to find on a Note 8.
