I must be on a diff server or just damn lucky for once. I got my ipad and iphone updates within 5 minutes and lion in about 10 on my 100mbit connection

People need to keep in mind its an electronic device and things cant possibly go right every time. Add in the fact apple released multiple updates to multiple platforms in a single day, its bound to cause some people some heartache. Always seems like its made right in the end, so I guess everyones just got to have a little patience. Im not sure any datacenter can handle the load Apple probably received today. I reckon tomorrow will be much better.

They possibly could have spread things out a little but with iCloud tying everything together, having pieces missing doesnt really help the whole picture. Im sure they will learn from their snafus on this.

I had talked to Applecare earlier in the day, due to the "update server could not be contacted" error. He said the servers are getting HAMMERED and keep trying.
Eventually it worked and the upgrade completed.
If you think you iDevice is bricked, it's probably not. Just keep plugging it in and you'll eventually get upgraded.
Yeah, not what everybody wants to hear. Just wanted to share my experience, and perhaps bring back a few folks from that panicked edge.

No offense, but excuses aren't what people (who are having problems with the update) want to hear right now. Information is what they want, examples of this happening to others, updates from those who managed to fix it, how they did it, etc. Everyone understands that problems happen. I want to know why this one is happening, and what I can do to fix it. If someone can give me reassurance my phone is going to return to a state exactly as I left it, I'll feel better....but I don't have that good feeling yet.

Captian Obvious, thanks. But maybe not wise to release every update at once if server farm is too weak. Leave people with ruined devise. Wow.

The really messed up thing is, I was supposed to be moving today; supposed to be on the road on a 965 mile trek to my new place and I was really depending on having a working iPhone.

If it was so critical that you had your phone for the journey, perhaps installing a major update on the day it's launched wasn't the cleverest thing to do..?

Mine is back -

Pics are there - all my apps and music not there. Need to resync that stuff.

I started the download right when it got released, just came home and apparently my Lion update downloads got corrupted. Now I have to download them again. BAH

Both iPad2 and iPhone4 getting the same error messages and failure to restore.
If Steve were alive today he'd be rolling in his grave.

Ignore error codes and delays- it will happen - Eventually

Took a couple of hours for me, with error codes (3014 & 3004) as well as "server not available". But it has finally finished. It just takes continual tries, and eventually, you will get your shot with the server and the update will happen.

So don't freak out (like I did:roll eyes: ) - just keep trying and trust that it will happen.

Yeah! Time to play with it and check out the new changes.

(note: At first, it only had the Apple basic Apps, and none of my numerous Apps on the screen. Then after about 20 minutes, it finished restoring all my Apps to their rightful location- so don't sweat it if you don't see all your Apps initially)

1/2 way there

My iPad 2 worked fine but my 3Gs hasn't worked after 6 tries. I'll try again later.

Also, my AppleTV update didn't work either.

Yeah, because the last time they did something this big went over SOOOO smoothly.

No, but this was a bit of mess. It is clear they recognized the upgrade process was only going to be used once and they put very little thought into make it smooth.

Unexplained Internal Errors requiring you to redo a very long backup process is not a good user experience.

It has nothing at all to do with Steve being gone, they likely would have screwed this up if he was there. In the end everyone will get upgraded and it will be fine, but it could have been easier. A lot easier.

iTunes wiped my iPhone in preparation for the update, then gave me an unknown error. My phone is now stuck in "recovery mode" giving me the "plug into iTunes" logo. I can't do anything now. I now have no phone. It did the same thing to my girlfriend's iPad (which of course, is not quite as important as a phone). This has been a complete debacle and I've seen a lot of other complaints of the same thing. What a mess.

Same here. iOS 5 just failed to install. I had to to a full restore, now every app I've downloaded is lost. A quick update is turning into a two hour ordeal.

Same thing happened to me. Update crashed halfway through and my phone was stuck in recovery mode. 2 tries later, it worked, then I was able to restore from my last backup. The only thing I lost was the layout off my app folders.

So if you do get stuck in Recovery Mode, it will eventually go through. Just keep trying. (And also that you do sync and back up your phone).

6 hours later and progress! I now have a new error message that is a recursive error within an error message.

We all get burned by personal experiences; 'last time' I didn't spend six hours (and counting!!) updating one device.

I know this forum can be pretty vocal, but there have been problems galore in my house and the sheer volume of traffic this site has received today is indicative of how widespread the issues have been.

What the???

I upgraded to the new iOS, Lion's and iTunes. I tried to install O5 on my iPad 2 and now I can't restore or update the device. Somethings messed up. Argghh... Am I the only one?:(

Egads, Apple

Volume-wise this day had to be anticipated like iPhone 07 x1,000 ... right??
