i too went thru the same error, bricking my phone, restored into factory setting, and eventually got it to work. now, funny thing is as i updated the apps on my iphone, all these apps disappeared....!!!!!! something funny w/ the air-sync is going on where your apps will disappear and come back in the wrong folders. it's really a mess and apple should really roll out this update incrementally. let's see, there are easily tens of million devices and Mac out there worldwide, and each device requires 700mb of update at the same time....is it really smart to basically allow ten of millions of people downloading 700mb of data all at once? what kind of data center do they think they have? it's a miracle that apple.com, icloud service, as well as everything else Apple is running has not melted. this is like the worst denial of service attack.

i got it to installed successfully eventually, so have your fingers crossed...

If it was so critical that you had your phone for the journey, perhaps installing a major update on the day it's launched wasn't the cleverest thing to do..?

Real nice constructive help there.

Like I said, I had NEVER had a problem updating any of my iDevices before, so I didn't expect this to happen, especially at the degree that it failed today.

Maybe if people like you had more of a helpful heart instead of simply bashing others, it would be a much better place for all...

ok so do we ned to backup our entire phone? Does it do it a full restore and then installtion of is05? Or will our contacts, music, and photos and apps stay on the phone? I just got home from work and dont feel like reading through 30 pages

Phew.......

.......6 hours to update 1x MBP, 2x iPad2s, and 2 iPhone4s....

...slow downloads.....error messages galore.......panic moments when i thought my devices were bricked.......relief moments when restore kicked in......

Starting at 6pm here in the UK doesn't give much time to play with the new toys though!!

Hope everyone is sorted out......

Updating to iOS5 fails after backing up of data. Error says unable to update because update server not available.... does anyone else experience the same problem?

Indeed.:( After trying several times with the same message I rebooted my iMac. Then it worked although it may have worked on the next attempt. Of course it still took a while to restore. In total it took 4 hours to download and install iTunes and iOS 5 on the iPhone. Now all is well:). I still have to do my iPad, UGH! I started to download the upgrade to Lion and the backup and saw it would take 22 hours. Nah, not tonight. I have to do iTunes and the OS upgrade on my MBP, again, not tonight It's already 7:21pm on the east coast.

We all get burned by personal experiences; 'last time' I didn't spend six hours (and counting!!) updating one device.

I know this forum can be pretty vocal, but there have been problems galore in my house and the sheer volume of traffic this site has received today is indicative of how widespread the issues have been.

I'm not disagreeing that there have been issues. I honestly think it's very strange that this is happening when they only have two OSs and like 6 devices. It has to be a server strain causing these issues. I updated everything in my tagline and not one issue.

Fail

Not impressed.

5 hours later and no phone - all past updated done on the day and worked within max 30 min. Not this time.

Bit of soul searching to be conducted, I suggest, dear Apple guys.

Just installed iOS 5 on my iPad 2 and for the first time since I bought it back in march the screen froze while browsing the app store and I had to reset it. That never happen before.

Alright, changing the subject. iPad 2 has an A5 and probably the same graphical power as the iPhone 4S, so why can't Siri be available for it along iOS 5?

Either some idiot did not move the authentication servers to the new data center or the new data center is an epic failure. Neither is a happy option.

Yes; I keep getting this error. First, it took about 30 minutes to download the ~70-90MB update for iTunes. Now I keep getting errors trying to download the iOS5 update.

I can imagine that they have a flood of people trying to update, which is stressing their servers. Hopefully I get through soon.

Apple is not stupid. They are using different internet connections for their update service, iTunes, apple.com and iCloud. This way, if one gets saturated, it wouldn't hurt the others. Plus allows them to adjust the bandwidth accordingly and save money from an ISP perspective, at least that is what I would do.

18 hours to update lion....not even to the IOS 5 yet!

"Wrap-up"?

Judging from the threads around the net I would say:

"Welcome to the Cloud .......... not what you expected"

lol

I was thinking similar thoughts. A poor showing for "the cloud*"

* generally speaking, i.e.: storage in the cloud, etc

I guess I was lucky. I got my updated for phone, pad, 2 apple TVs, and the Mac and it all took less than 1.5 hours for downloads/installs on all fronts.

Here's a crazy thought... wait. just wait one day to run your updates if they're taking too long.

Live and learn folks. Day one is not good at all unless you have time to waste. We've been through this since the launch of original iPhone.
