You can just back up your 3G and when the 4S arrives, plug it in, then you can choose to restore from that backup.

----------

Right I have plans to do so but when I restore from that backup it won't have iOS5 on it so will I then have to reinstall iOS5 on it?

It will just restore your backup to your new shiny iPhone 4S with iOS 5. The iOS/firmware/baseband whatever won't be downgraded in the process.

I had quite a few issues. Took hours to finally get it to go. Corrupted downloads, failed syncs etc. I didn't try to track it all, but after a number of hard resets and re-downloads and reboots all the updates finally worked. (2 iMacs, a mini, a pad, 3 iPhones)

Well, apparently Newsstand is a folder itself, so I can't put it in another folder. That's really annoying.

Still trying to get gestures to work on the iPad1, anyone else having that trouble?

I'm trying to use a MobileMe email address that I'd cancelled awhile back for email (iCloud) but I'm getting a message that the address is in use. Anyone figured out yet how to transfer a canceled me.com email to iCloud?

I had a similar issue in where I had an inactive/lapsed MobileMe account, and it let me reconnect to it with my old password, and migrate to iCloud successfully. However, I never actively "cancelled it", just let the subscription run out. Hopefully not, but it may be possible someone scooped that email address up. I suggest either calling or an online chat with an applecare rep.

Also, do it from within IOS. You can't do it from the web. Maybe 10.7.2 also, but I did it through the iCloud settings in IOS 5.

MBP done (Lion update), ATV2 done, first iPhone almost done (it's restoring music and videos now).

One more iPhone and 2 iPads left to go.

This is by far the longest taking update I have ever downloaded!

----------

I've been downloading it for about 30 minutes...has told me that it will take 13-14 hours to complete...and that is on AT&T's DSL 2nd to fastest speed.:mad:

Well I've been downloading for 3 hours and it still tells me 14 hours and I'm on Time Warners fastest internet at 50 mbps.

Correction: 13 hours!

Ok, the one feature I really was looking forward to in iOS 5 was the location-based reminders....

I was under the impression that we could set the range of the reminder... All I see is "When I leave" and "When I arrive"... That's not horribly useful.

I had hoped that I could set a reminder to remind me to buy cat food, turkey, or vitamins when I was say 5 mi away from the store I buy those things at, to prevent me from forgetting and just driving by, only to remember when I got home... You know, a useful reminder....

Am I just missing something here?

Hrmph..

Well, you can't specify within 5 miles, but you can tell it to give you the reminder whenyou walk into a specific store....

However, what they failed to mention in the IOS keynote was that you need to manually enter the address yourself, which also means manually searching for it, copy and paste, etc.

That to me, makes it less useful of a feature.

Now, if you have a 4S, I suppose this is where Siri is useful, as Siri can locate the specific store and attach it to your reminders.

If you go to the same key places, it would be worth while to add those places for future use. You have to add the locations to your address book. I don't know if they'll stay in the short list, or if you'll manually have to search your contacts each time. By then, just write a paper list

Hate that the update messed up the order of all my apps!! I spent 30+ minutes last night trying to organize all my apps in order and delete ones I don't need. Then after the update all that time I put in was wasted and Apple gave me more apps I can't delete that I'll never use (Videos, Newsstand).

Like the new notifications also.

I'm with ya. I spend hours agonizing over the arrangement of my apps, achieving an efficient, logical, symmetrical, minimalist array. This empty newsstand app, which I won't be using, is annoyingly stubborn. Why it couldn't be merged with the iBooks app is beyond me, but, can't switch it off in permissions, can't delete it, can't even tuck it in a folder!

The only odd wart on an otherwise awesome day full of great surprises.

If it is on your regular path, could you time it and have Reminders go off just before you get to that point? Agree that it would be useful to be able to say, " This location is 'last turn before the shops'." ... "Remind me at 'Last Turn' to get cat food." As I'm in western Qld, Aus., most of the restaurants, etc, searches won't work for me so I was hoping this would work.

does anybody know if we can upload our own alert tones now because of the new downloadable tones?

Yes. You do it the same way you would make your own ring tones.

If you're on a Mac, the easiest way is to just import an audio clip into Garage band, trim it, and export to iTunes as a ring tone.

In your phone settings go to sounds.... below the list of tones, is your list of ring tones that can also be set.

So what's the point of iCloud? So we can waste more money on silly Apple services?

I know, it's so expensive! How dare they expect us to pay $0.00 for seamless, automatic, global, cross-platform synchronization?! The nerve...

But, seriously, what's the point of the Calendar app, now that Reminders does the same thing with added functionality?

Ugh, Newsstand. I was hoping I was just missing something but apparently it's stuck this way... The best I could come up with was putting it on its own screen that I won't ever visit.

More money???? It's free! I've been paying $99 a year for mobile me I no longer have to pay. I don't understand your question or concern?

Free only gets you 5GB, which isn't much if you want to back up music or videos.

Must be one of those "silly Apple services" They want us to pay for!

So you expect Apple to just give you all the cloud based services and space YOU need for free?? Sure would be nice, I have 300 gb of music I would like to store for free but I live on the planet earth. I'd also like to get all my gas for free when I buy a car but that's not how it works child.

So if you are on snow leopard and mobile me; and don't want Lion on your machine- but you just bought a 4s (with ios5)....

Your back to pluging in your device to itunes to manually manage you contacts and calendar that worked perfect in the ecosystem of syncing in the MM cloud yesterday.

F'n wonderful. Nice foresight there Apple.

This pisses me off. I don't want Lion yet, iCloud forces me to have it, and ios5 forces me to have iCloud and dumps on my MM family pack I have had for years.
Not to mention Gallary, iDisk and the other syncing functions that got axed in this feeble minded move.

Seriously- This is a joke, right?

Back to iPhone 1 syncing to get it to work within many's needs? Tim's getting an email tomorrow, and I may return my 4s over this if what I am discussing above is actually reality.

The entire system used to work, that's what I love about apple; but these forced hands with guns to my head I'm not liking. It's like they can't see the forest through the trees lately. Some customers just can't upgrade the damn software ASAP - especially when it's borked for many to begin with (and still is).

You'd think from reading 3,4 pages, that this was the Worst update in history... Well, I'm here to say; loving the iOS 5 update on both my iPhone 4, iPad 2 & iPad 1!

Great job Apple!

Coachingguy

Wish I could say the same. I've still got 11 hours til I'm finished downloading the update. I am happy for you. Really.

After my problems earlier, I left the house this evening at 6 while the phone was starting the recovery process after being bricked temporarily. To my surprise, when I got home the recovery process had completed, and when I started using the phone it was asking the new user questions for iOS5. Everything on the phone was how I left it except for some new apps and iOS5!! : ) I wasn't happy earlier, but I am happy now. Love the notifications, it's what they should have been from the beginning.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

So why did they not just add the reminders to the calendar app? Any way to sync the two? So now I have calendar, reminders and 2Do? That's annoying. I'm going to have to pick between reminders and 2Do I guess.

No errors except some weirdness with address book thinking my iPhone was my old Nokia flip phone. Other than it taking an hour, everything else went smothe.

My iPad updated fine but slow

I managed to get my iPad2 updated and all my media is fine. It did take a lot longer than i expected it too. I also have an iPhone4 that I was syncing with my iMac. Given all the problems that people have experienced, I think I will wait until some time next week before I push my luck.
