There's no reason for home button to go missing on 7s if it does have bezels. Remember the haptic-home button (or whatever that is called) is also relatively new introduced only in 7. Assuming camera on that is at par with what you call x-edition, 7s would be my preferred phone. Even with a sub-par camera it still might be depending on the additional cost of x-edition. But I will be a little sad about that.

Considering the new iOS 11 videos demonstrate an iPhone 7 functioning without a home button & countless prototypes appearing with rear facing Touch ID.

I think there could be a slight chance that Apple is going all out on eliminating the front home button experience on the entire line-up this year.

My prediction; (come back here after the event & see!)

iPhone 7s - renamed to iPhone, without home button and rear-facing Touch ID

iPhone 7s Plus - renamed to iPhone Plus, without home button and rear-facing Touch ID

iPhone X Edition - OLED, “bezel-less” design with Face ID only.

And all the above mentioned iPhones will also make magnetic charging the norm, with ceramic backs.

It's sad that some of you literally will spend almost 1 thousand for a new phone! All I see is bunch of "Yesmen" to Apple. Now let's take at some of the "biggest" new stuff..

I signed up for the monthly payment upgrade plan, so I'm getting the new model no matter what, it's just a matter of when. And, really, I get to spend my hard earned money any way I want, don't I?

I've made up my mind. Will be going for iPhone 7S Plus. Off on the 22nd, so I am all set.
same here but anyone on AUP or similar upgrade program would only be paying an additional $4-$8 extra a month - so it wouldn't be too much of stretch to go for the OLED phone.

Face ID - How many of you said back in June "I won't buy it unless Touch ID is in the screen.."

Wireless charging - Are we humans getting more lazier? Is it hard to plug in a small cable into your phone? Imagine if we, today, had to use a "pad" just to charge our phones? And all of a sudden, Apple brought small little cables into the world. "Apple is the BEST I SWEAR"!

Bezel less - I give credit to that..

Notification center - Are you really that geeky? They do this every year.

Full of people that won't lead the crowd, but follow the crowd!

(If this is your first iPhone or you're upgrading from 6/6s, I don't mind you).

I'm so glad you've sorted out what we should all spend our own money on, then.

It takes the pressure off me to conform instead of, you know, spend my own damned money however I like.

I disagree.
I think they need to market this expensive iPhone in a way that distinguishes it from the 7s/7s+, and justify the cost.
Yes, they can talk about the quality of the screen, and the all-new design, but isn't it possible they talk about a feature that uses this amazing screen, to justify the purchase. Perhaps for photography.. this all new screen shows the colours and higher dynamic range better than all previous iPhones.
And then they can justify the 'Pro' moniker, in much the same way as iPad Pro.

Also, 'Edition' conveys a one-off item... an exclusive.
Whereas this will iPhone will (probably) be updated next year.

They need to reset the iPhone naming at some point... or we'll have an iPhone 14s, and iPhone 23, etc... all silly.
So now seems a good a time as any to rename as iPhone, iPhone+, iPhone Pro. (And SE)

I think it'll be a Pro, too. People are citing 'Edition' as the more costly model (see: Apple Watch), but the 'Pro' is always the more costly (and feature-rich) of the Mac options or the iPad options, so 'Pro' is logical.

But all of these features could be found in a phone worth less than 500$, but you're willing to spend almost a thousand... Just my two cents.
Augmented reality, facial recognition, A11 chip, and the screen size to form factor ratio cannot be found on any other iphone, let alone one for less than $500.

Edit: I misread your post. I thought you said an iPhone for less than $500, not just phone. My bad. However, given your screen name, I thought you would be one to be buying the new phone. So you could be one of the first, and not following.

I would say "yes", but that just means I'm a yesman, and we can't have that.

I suspect 'long term satisfied customers' are being mistaken for 'yesmen'. It's definitely not my being a fashion victim; no amount of Apple tech could make my balding, cardigan wearing self hip and happening.

I'm not being dismissive of your opinion, but I do highly disagree with you about the iPhone being named "Pro." And the reason why is there is nothing Pro about an iPhone or smart phone in general, because it's main functionality is to deliver/accept incoming messages and notifications. Even aside from all the other added functionalities, that's the main focus of what a phone does. The Pro moniker would more likely be suited for an iPad, MacBook Pro, those are productivity Devices that are intended to complete work related task for desktop applications, spreadsheets, graphic design, etc.

Some make the argument that features like a dual camera, 3D Touch, perhaps added Tru- Tone or stereo speakers do not make the iPhone anymore Pro because of added features. Those features I listed are for convenience, not designed for work productivity.

too bad not all of us aren't as free spirited as you are.

The new OLED iPhone will be called the "TAI". Perfectly in line with the "TAM", and a perfect hint at the 40th anniversary of Star Wars.

They will call it the Anniversary phone, in Memory of Steve, or someting similar, and then we will have an iPhone 8 next year

This is a last minute leak about the iPhone Pro. I heard it comes with headphone jack because professionals are still using 3.5mm plug for a better quality audio.

All the cool kids will say 'Hey man I have the iPhone Pro harrr diiii darrrr'.

Just kidding there of course won't be an iPhone Pro and my example is one of the many reasons why. It's about the lamest name possible.

Hmmm m

Hmmm this is actually extremely accurate. Pro really does have to do with productivity and power. iPhone Pro wouldn't make sense.

Maybe they'll go with iPhone X. Very curious to see...

You shouldn't spend your money frivolously buying yourself an overpriced iPhone. You should frivolously spend that money buying ME an overpriced iPhone.

I swear I would sing your praises for 1 calendar year.

Nothing really new.. Wireless charging and bezel less screen?

The Face ID isn't directly implanted on the phone, but on the iOS itself...
Face ID still requires hardware though (3D sensing camera module) ...

Sounds like a fair deal to me. Sing my praises 24/7 for 1 calendar year and I'll buy you a top of line iPhone in 2018. Each line has to be different though, with lots of rhymes. I like rhymes.

Your boss, Tim Cook, is laughing at you lol. Sad.
Your boss wants his catchphrase back.

Odds of Pencil 2.0 or an updated/upgraded Smart Keyboard making a surprise appearance?

Maybe some kind of deep integration with iOS 11 that hasnt been spotted yet?
