But all of these features could be found in a phone worth less than 500$, but you're willing to spend almost a thousand... Just my two cents.

But they don’t run iOS. And this phone will have features that no other phone currently has:

Advanced facial recognition - So advanced that Kuo reported no Android phone will have this until at least 2019

Advanced cameras to take advantage of AR - Can’t get that on Android yet nor will you be able to in the near future

120Hz ProMotion - I’m hoping with this one

OLED display - Yes, Android has had this for years but it’s a first for iPhone and this is the only Apple device that will give me it

Bezeless design - Again, Android phones have this but only since this past year. The OLED iPhone will have the highest screen to body ratio than any phone out there

A11 chip - Which will apparently be clocked higher than the “7S”. No Android phone out there will be able to beat that performance

So yes, I don’t want a £500 Android phone just because it “does the job”. I know you can get some of the things above elsewhere but there are some additional things that the OLED iPhone (I’m calling it that now so nobody moans at me for calling it iPhone 8) has which will be ahead of the competition. All in one package which you won’t be able to find elsewhere.

As we speak they're laying turf around the Theatre and the external edge of the Cafeteria (as seen in the latest drone videos). I'd wager the Theatre is being used to intro the new products and the Cafe is being used for the hands-on afterwards.

It's sad that some of you literally will spend almost 1 thousand for a new phone! All I see is bunch of "Yesmen" to Apple. Now let's take at some of the "biggest" new stuff..

<snip>

You signed up today solely to insult everyone? Anything you might have to say is going to get skipped over after your opening conversational gambit.

What's with the newbies and their ******** trolling...

I've no idea.

Bought my son his first iOS device yesterday, and iPod Touch. With family sharing I've got control over what apps get installed and what money gets spent. He's on his Apple Music trial with a view to maybe upgrading my individual membership to family. The films I've bought and we watch on Apple TV are now available to him subject to age restrictions in parental controls. The device is secured, encrypted, locateable with Find My Phone and remotely wipeable in case anything should happen.

Guess we're both Yesmen?

I have the opposite mindset when it comes to this. I don’t mind paying a large amount for a premium phone. It’s the one device you have on you practically 24/7. It’s your camera, maps, portable gaming device, mini tv, your internet and everything else all in your pocket. And for that I want the best that Apple has to offer, and I don’t mind paying the premium for something I use so much.
Sure, but the way I see it, it's hard to justify spending $1K to upgrade from an older model (iPhone 6s Plus) which still meets my needs just fine.

Although for me it's the device I use when I'm away from a Mac or need to look at something real quick, and not my primary do-all device as it is for some people. Just couldn't imagine it replacing my Mac for the majority of tasks I do on it.

I just hope the new iPhone with OLED will be announced at the end of the keynote with Tim saying "there is one more thing..."

That's not how "one more thing..." worked with Steve. His were usually unexpected. The iPhone8/iPhone Pro is what EVERYONE is expecting and is what EVERYONE is there for. Period.

Considering the new iOS 11 videos demonstrate an iPhone 7 functioning without a home button & countless prototypes appearing with rear facing Touch ID.

I think there could be a slight chance that Apple is going all out on eliminating the front home button experience on the entire line-up this year.

My prediction; (come back here after the event & see!)

iPhone 7s - renamed to iPhone, without home button and rear-facing Touch ID

iPhone 7s Plus - renamed to iPhone Plus, without home button and rear-facing Touch ID

iPhone X Edition - OLED, “bezel-less” design with Face ID only.

And all the above mentioned iPhones will also make magnetic charging the norm, with ceramic backs.
Hahahaha. No way man. Not gonna happen. I like your optimism though.

The problem I think that most have is that they're watering down the 7/7+ with a 3rd tier. If this plays out that they introduce the iPhone Pro, they've shifted the technology that would have been in the 7+ to the "Pro". It's what they've done with the iPad with just absolutely frustrating. Rather than the iPad pro technology simply replacing the iPad as they've historically done, they said, lets just leave the iPad alone and create a whole new tier with the tech that would have normally gone into the ipad.

In short, the problem is them creating these new "pro" tiers with technology that historically would have been found in the now/soon to be lower tier and they let the lower tiers rot.

Face ID, how will Apple improve this? "It opens even quicker." "Even more secure" "Even more stable" ..
Lol buddy.. you're nothing, but a controlled clown in the circus.

I think the biggest problem with critics here is that they by and large lack vision and perspective.

Take the iPhone 7 for example. The removal of the headphone jack is Apple pushing us towards a cable-free future. Taptic Engine has implications on accessibility and overall usability. Touch ID plays into Apple's mobile payment strategy, rather than simply being a faster way of unlocking your phone. Even seemingly innocuous features like the W1 chip has huge impact on Apple's wearable strategy. And judging by the current state of things, Apple is the only company who will have a leg in that race.

Each feature is going to be a part of something bigger. Something more. But if all people can do is fixate on that potential $1000 price tag, then I think there is really little more that can be meaningfully discussed.

Again, vision and perspective.

Nah. I'm switching back to iOS from Android this year so I'm spared. :D

You know what would be cool, the entire room goes pitch black, then all you hear is the sound of Steve Jobs voice from the Macworld 2007 launch of the first iPhone:

"We’re gonna make some history together today."

"Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything."

"one’s very fortunate if you get to work on just one of these in your career."

The new iPhone comes up from the bottom of the screen in carousel detail to show the front face, then it lights up 'Hello'

Tim Cook comes up on stage and says introducing 'Apple Phone'

I think it will be interesting to hear how they justify their late arrival in the OLED game, several years late in fact (maybe since the Samsung Galaxy S5?). They have been the best technology to use for a long time and it may well have been the fact that Apple couldn't get the required numbered of screens manufactured but that won't be what they say.

Surely they can't get away with simply extolling the virtues of OLED/AMOLED when competitors have used it for year? I guess it'll be one for the reality distortion field...

Agreed.

iPhone Pro is my guess.

The Pro label was supposed to mean that a product is used by professionals who use the product as the primary means of making a living and need additional power and features.

The original intention of a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro was that the target was someone who needed a exceptionally powerful computer to do work like photo or video editing, music production, etc. They needed faster i/o and processing because the machine was making money for them and the faster the machine, the more money that could be made.

Of course "Pro" has been bastardized by people (like me) who want a powerful machine, but don't really need it. Yes, I use a computer in the course of my work, and use it a lot, but I am not a computer professional using it for rendering or compiling or the like.

While the have been pretty loose lately with this label, an iPhone Pro doesn't make any sense. Unless they are targeting professional phone callers. I doubt they are targeting call centers or debt collectors.

iPhone Edition, Yes. iPhone Pro, Not a chance.

Problem is there's really no new features... Apple is good at making them look very neat and new though!

There are no new features? So far we know of.. 3x resolution screen, OLED, wireless charging, a11 chip (will be better than any competing phone for likely 2 years), 3D scanning camera (not released in any phone currently), improvements to the rear camera (best camera out there), and a brand new design. There may be even more that I am missing or we haven't heard rumors about. I see this as a massive update for anyone who uses the iOS platform.

Holographic Steve to deliver the keynote.
While cool, it would show weakness in the current leadership's ability to bring products to market. While I know you're kidding, I doubt we'll ever see anything like this happen.

First prediction will be wrong. So will second. Third is incorrect name (I hope). 4th prediction is partly right (not ceramic back).

There’s my prediction.

I disagree.
I think they need to market this expensive iPhone in a way that distinguishes it from the 7s/7s+, and justify the cost.
Yes, they can talk about the quality of the screen, and the all-new design, but isn't it possible they talk about a feature that uses this amazing screen, to justify the purchase. Perhaps for photography.. this all new screen shows the colours and higher dynamic range better than all previous iPhones.
And then they can justify the 'Pro' moniker, in much the same way as iPad Pro.

Also, 'Edition' conveys a one-off item... an exclusive.
Whereas this will iPhone will (probably) be updated next year.

They need to reset the iPhone naming at some point... or we'll have an iPhone 14s, and iPhone 23, etc... all silly.
So now seems a good a time as any to rename as iPhone, iPhone+, iPhone Pro. (And SE)
