MMS and video recording can be solved with third party apps. iChat will be addressed once the AT&T exclusivity contract is expired. A great update, overall, with the potential to grow continuously and exponentially. The Keynote will be available after 5:00 PM EDT.
Thanks. I listened to the audio feed, but I'd like to see the whole video.

Classic Apple butthole-ology

Folks, nothing's changed!

This is classic Apple Butthole-ology (in layman's terms): release LESS than what you expect, reap a maximum profit from it, then upgrade that same product 6 months later with all the features you expect and demand and deserve....at a premium price!!!

Relax. Be patient. This is what they do. This is how they operate.

I'm with you dude. I bought an 8GB last fall, got ahold of a 16GB the day they came out, and will be getting a 3G as soon as they become available. I don't feel ripped off. I made these choices. Apple didn't force me into anything, and I have no complaints.

I just hope most people out there are unsatisfied with this release, because it means I'll just get mine without waiting in a huge line.

Look there! another guy with common sense! someone throw this guy a high five

So... Like most people, when I bought my iPhone last year, I extended my AT&T contract for another two years and paid an additional $20/month for the iPhone data plan. So... will AT&T continue to honor this? Will they let me purchase the new iPhone and use it without any additional payments? Or, will I be forced to do ANOTHER 2 year extension and ANOTHER $20/month for the "iPhone 3G data plan," essentially coming out to $40/month?

An AT&T exclusive phone is far from available to 100% of the nation for any number of reasons, from reception to price to simple consumer grudges...

Reception? The original post said it was unavailable to 66% of the nation... AT&T's coverage might not be 100% but it ain't 34% either.

Price? $199 for a better version of a phone that sold out (6 million) at more than twice the price?

Simple consumer grudges??? It's still AVAILABLE to you... if you have a grudge against AT&T, deal with it. Doesn't make it UNavailable to you... you're making yourself unavailable to the iPhone. The AT&T exclusivity deal was well-known to be a multi-year deal, so how is this a surprise?

It would appear that despite being available (soon) in more than 70 countries, Apple has still not found Africa on a map.

Not sure what you mean - a quick glance at the "coming soon" country list shows Central African Republic, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Niger - all of which are in Africa

Look, I'm not fanboy, but for once, this is really something you CAN'T blame Apple for. Did they create the hype? Did they promise a year ago a totally new iPhone with video chat, a built-in toaster, etc? No, they said that the iPhone would use new technologies, and that's it. Guess what? That's exactly what happened today. It uses newer 3G technology. It uses a real GPS.

The hype machine was generated by the fanboys. They have no one to blame but themselves for creating hype and then falling for it.

That's sad and funny but there is some truth to that...

What I find odd is that they promote a new service that will allow individuals to add applications to their hearts content... but... they do not increase the storage size of the phone. Odd to say the least.

Welcome back whiners!
For many reasons...

The 'new' iPhone is simply a poor 'catch up'. The apps are boring and trivial - a phone is to make calls and nowadays to take photos / videos. The camera on the iPhone is an absolute JOKE.

This is a REAL let down from Apple...unbelievably bad. I feel like crying

And is the iPhone still tied to AT&T service? That's soooo 2002. Where's the unlocked iphones? If I can't use it with my Tmobile service, it's useless for me. I'm not changing carriers just to buy a silly phone. Get with the program here Apple.

What a let down. :(

Way to be an elitist *******. Go f*** yourself.

what a let down. NO 32gb, no camera-improvement, no copy and paste.

steve... u didn't make my day!

¡¡¡¡¿¿¿¿¿ STILL NOT MMS ?????!!!!!

· NO MMS MULTIMEDIA MESSAGING (you can´t attach pictures or videos to sms messages so if you are outside USA you can´t send pictures to your contacts)

· NO VIDEO RECORDING!!! OH MY GOD STEVE DO YOU LIVE IN WONDERLAND??
· NO REPLACEBLE BATTERY
· NO VIDEO CALLING
· LOCATING YOUR CONTACTS THROUGH GPS?? I DON'T WANT ANYBODY TO LOCALIZE ME!! I LOVE MY PRIVACY

YOU ARE ALL BLIND, IT IS THE SAME DEVICE BUT NOW MORE "SELLING CAPABLE"
More sold equals better support and quicker upgrades.

what a let down, no copy and paste.
I thought Word and Pages is fully supported.

Yes, but 3G is prevalent in the majority of African nations. I'm surprised they aren't supporting more nations there. Almost the majority of Europe is covered, likewise in North America. It just seems like it'd be in Apple's best interest to put the iPhone in every nation that can support it.

I don't care if we are talking CD players, DVD players, VCR's, iPods, HD TV's, computers, or even precious iPhones.... the people who buy them first will ALWAYS pay significantly more money for the new technology. Always always always always always. History has shown that over time any given technology will become better for a cheaper price in the years following the initial launch.

When I bought my first computer I paid nearly $3,000 for a 1GB hard drive and 8MB of RAM. Two months ago I paid half that amount for 250 GB drive/8 GB RAM with a processor that is about 1000x faster than that earlier computer. It is the way technology works.

I'm sorry you guys bought a phone that will now see a substantial price drop for new customers, but frankly you shouldn't be surprised.

Technically speaking, they did increase the storage, as you now get a larger capacity iPhone (16 GB) for $100 less than the old iPhone (8 GB). They made a similar move with the third generation iPod nano. Though the sizes were the same, 8 GB cost $50 less than the second generation, so technically, you got more for less.

I would have liked a 32 GB iPhone at the old $399 price point, though.

AMEN!!!

i have a doubt..

will the 1.1.4 be "updatable" to the 2.0???
Of course it will. When syncing your iPhone in iTunes, it will say "a new software update is available," which will be 2.0.

It will be free on the iPhone and be pre-loaded on all new iPhone. It will cost $9.95 on the iPod touch but should also be pre-loaded on all new iPod touch.

No Blu-Ray support? No DVD Studio 5 (with Blu-Ray encoding)? No Mac updates? No new hardware? Kind of lackluster if you ask me.

I am pissed off and disappointed after owning an iPhone since the first day... I can't believe that Apple doesn't listen to us. At $199 they are going to sell 5 million phones in a week to new customers... That's all they care for... But how about the old customers who expected a lot more after a year of stupid rumors and useless fake pictures. Isn't Apple listening? My $499 iPhone dropped to $399 and now it's going to be worth $49 on eBay when the new one comes out. I will probably keep it as a back up, just in case but it pisses me and a dozen of my friends that we have nothing really special besides the 3G to upgrade to. Or should it be DOWNgrade, since my phone cost me double only 11 months ago...:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Don't be an early adopter. Sheesh.

I'm not arguing with your main sentiment, I'm just stating that an exclusive deal with a single carrier does not provide 100% availability and is not giving Apple maximum exposure in the market.

Sticks n stones...

Only true minimum wage earners can spell French-derived words?

I know that you think your little nouveau riche values make you superior, but you're wrong.

I'm not sure if you're directly addressing me with the comment about the plastic iPhone, but you're assuming that I'm going to buy it. I may, and I may not. Regardless, if I do buy it, I'll make the decision based on whether or not I'll enjoy it and find the features useful. I'm not going to act like a little girl and buy it for status alone.

If you're so concerned about obtaining societal status from a phone, then there are plenty of options available. Buy one of the phones designed by haute couture company. Or do you not have the money to spend on those?

Shall I analyze and dissect your screen/nickname lol? Hilarious!!! Dude, find something else better to do....like, oh I dunno, peruse the Apple website and read all the super-detailed (lol) information that is now available for the brand, spankin' new PLASTIC iphone 3G!!

Seriously, dude...I don't usually even respond to people like you. I just let you have your say and move on---yanno, like civilized people are supposed to do!! No, seriously. No reply necessary. And if you can't be man (or it is transgender?) enough to do so, then I will! Watch n see. When you reply to this comment I won't respond back. Watch.

3g

While people talking about 3G, FYI - 3G is only available in metropolitan area and there surrounding cities. Outside that. 2.5G(EGDE).....I'm with the other guy. Apple doesn't hype anything, so why diss them??? Who uses video chat in the US?? Maybe I got broke friend and associates and I'm in Austin, TX, a technology town and I never seen anybody using video chat...

Wow, dissappointing.

It's called iPhone3G for a reason - not worthy of "iPhone 2" name...

- Camera is still 2 megapixel
- No memory increase
- Did they fix misc other problems, ie with the SMS/multimedia/etc.
- No video conferencing added

It's really just a revised iPhone... the software update was coming anyway and runs on the original iPhone... 3G should have been in the first release, as should have GPS.... ATT subsidizing it should have been the case to begin with...

Not BAD, but certainly nothing here that makes one go wow...

- Expected more from this revision
- Expected a new wow device - ie multitouch tablet or something
- Updates to Cinema Displays... ever?? Please...

etc.

Uh, dude, the price of the phone went down.

if you look many of us are asking for OLD technology that was available on smartphones in 1999.
