Huzzah!
What a strange way to go about it all...
remember @ the begining of the year, no MWNY. Apple moving away from event-type product releases and now this...this is actually more exciting than MWSF.

I, like others, suspect this means 970s within the month. If, by some miracle, they are available imediately, many of us will owe MacBid an apology:)

All i want now is a live webcast. If not, IRC will do.

Well, if Apple doesn't make it possible for me to own a nice shiny new dual 1.8 Ghz G5/970 Mac on my desktop by Christmas, I WILL go and buy a PC.

I'm sick and tired of lagging behind, getting screwed because Moto can't make chips, and because Jobs likes his "speed bumps" in increments of less than 5%.

I'm seeing the 3D graphics world go all PC, and even the video world too... (Adobe is helping that along too..)

I don't drive 30 mph slower than everyone else on the freeway, I shouldn't have to compute slower than everyone else!

Lordy lord, there's never been as much anticipation for NEW PRO KIT at an Apple event than there is now... seems like it would be suicide not to at LEAST show everyone what is coming at some point in, say, the 30 days after WWDC.

Perhaps the rumormongers them(our)selves pushed Apple to show something they perhaps originally weren't? =)

All's I know is, regardless or religios orientation, start praying! I've got a wad of cash absolutely burning a hole in my pocket and would LOVE to spend it on a new Pro machine, regardless of the chance that 4 months later they'll release a dual-processor config! (that is if the rumors that only single-proc configs would show up at first!)

yaaaaaaaaaay! I'm getting my hopes up! IRRESPONSIBLE YES BUT I DON'T CARE ANYMORE. I think this is a major turning point for a lot of Pro users - Apple needs to at least show what moves it's going to make in the next 30-60 days (read: 970s!), or it'll prove once and for all that Apple's a sucker for giving Moto a million second chances... booo.

Doubtful, but what would be amazing is if the Apple Stores had these things for sale immediately after the keynote. Either that or have a Friday night debut, like with the new iPod. I can't wait until the 23rd. That's going to be quite a three day period. New Harry Potter on Saturday and Steve Jobs on Monday. Is it Christmas already? ;)

I don't think so...

If you can get a dual 1.42GHz PowerMac for less than an iMac with 1 processor at 1 GHz they will sit on their iMacs then instead.

I think they will just bit into the lemon to be stuck with a certain amount of old PowerMacs, since people will be buying the 970s liek crazy anyway it shouldn't hurt too much..

Or, they give them to Edu institutions. Nice tax break (if similar laws to the country I live in) to ease the pain, and great PR. The pain will surely also be salved by the modest increase in sales due to PPC970 chips.

Hang in there WildMac!

There's an old saying "Inside every pragmatist is an idealist searching for an ideal".

Your frustration is justified, I think every died in the wool Apple fan has felt a bit like that over the past few years.

But, finally I think, our just desserts are coming! I read a thread recently, where developers were warning that what is hot to a developer may be of no interest to the average consumer - the warning was consumers will necessarily be disappointed by the WWDC.

So why are they showing the WWDC in Apple stores? Answer: There will be a lot in the WWDC for consumers.

That is why some of us are saying the 970 is confirmed. Jobs will showcase new PowerMacs at the very least, and he wouldn't do that if we weren't going to get our hands on them till next year.

So hang in there WildMac, methinks you won't be disappointed!

i think it's about a half hour by car......... it's a crappy trip, i made it once with this guy who i went to school with and hated, i was just buggin to get out of philly........ maybe the trip would've been better if it hadn't been with him........

Well, if I have to read that one more Mac user is going to the dark side because something sucks, I WILL go and buy a PC.

:D

King of Prussia / they owe me

From center city Philly, take 76 to the Valley Forge exit. it might take 20 minutes or so. I'll be there...holding my breath for Marathon 4 (and then passing out)

Anyhow, I don't know about the rest of you but I deserve the 970! I saved up one summer and bought myself a 7200/75! They forgot to put a FPU on my 475 ;)! They made me use system 7.5! I payed for eWorld! And I still love them! They owe it to me!

Special event in Japan also.

At a hall just outside Yuurakucho there will be a screening of the keynote. This is pretty amazing as in Japan the keynote will start at 2:00AM and run till 4:00AM.

Doors open at 1:00AM, just about the time the trains stop running and the bars close. If you go you are stuck there for the night.

My question is what will happen with the powerbooks now... Despite what Casanova says... I think I might be dissapointed. :(

haha! I scheduled June 23rd off about 3 weeks ago thinking this would probably happen, and I would get to watch the keynote that lots claimed would not be aired. It's going to be a great year for apple fans!

The KoP store is about 15 miles from downtown philly - BUT - it's not one of the "theater" stores. They didn't show the iPod/ITMS talk there, and I'm betting they won't show this one.

where's the source?

this seems to have been missed, but everyone is taking this to be gospel truth, and as far as I can see, there is no source attributed whatsoever.

Why should we believe this?

(curious, not antagonistic...)

It's close enough. About 30 mins northwest. Go up I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), and you pretty much run right into it just before hitting the PA turnpike. Be careful when you go though, I-76 can get real backed up at times. Check traffic.

The Apple Store there is a good one, I have to say. I was happy to see lots of non-Mac-geek-types browsing the store when I saw it last. :)

I'd like to know the source too, because if it's more reliable than rumor, it's the most concrete (if vague) reason yet to get excited.

But people WILL still be disappointed--maybe not many, but a very vocal few! Because not ALL the rumors can come true. This suggests Apple has SOMETHING big in store, but we really don't know what. It could be something unrelated to anything we've expected. And it might not ship for 60+ days, whatever it is. And whatever it is, it will have certain details that "could have been better" in people's minds. Price, MHz, lack of USB 2, weird new case, faint smell of rotting 'possum... something.

Rumor devotees tend to be disappointed by most Apple events. Whatever is coming, however great, expectations will be even higher. Be prepared and remember that this is the next, not the last, thing coming from Apple.

Regardless, for me, the big news IS Panther, however long it takes to get. Panther, and not any speeds or specs, is what will keep me from ever going Wintel. I am anxious for Panther details!

EDIT: What if Panther, all by itself, is big enough to deserve a broadcast? That could be even more exciting than getting 970s earlier than the fall.

Was there an official announcement of this from Apple? I could not find anything on Apple's web site.

hmmm

steve jobs invited me 'personally' to the wwdc, but the invitation to the berlin event - which i'd like to attend - has yet to appear... aw, rats ;)

What are you imagining that would make Panther so incredible?

I am waiting for the G5 Aluminum 15", but I can't wait for the 970's in general and the preview of Panther!!!! Does anybody remember the updates to iChat and videoconferencing? I bet that will be a previewed feature for Panther maybe, now that I think about it. We'll have to see what happens.
