do you have any third party safari hacks installed? safari stand, pith helmet, etc..?? that would probably cause the problem you're having. at least, it used to for me, with recent webkit's.

I just moved Saft and Stand to the Desktop and it's still crashing. Seems like a reasonable culprit though.

EDIT:

It may have been SafariBlock. It's working fine now. Thanks for the suggestion.

WWDC: Safari For Windows

Citing Safari's increasing market share (currently 4.9%, according to Apple) and Apple's desire to see increased adoption of its innovative browser platform, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that Apple has ported Safari to Windows (XP and Vista).

Experience the web, Apple style, with Safari: the fastest, easiest-to-use web browser in the world. With its simple, elegant interface, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web -- up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer.

The Safari 3 Public Beta is available for download for both Mac and Windows.

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but can anyone comfirm to what extent (if any) Safari 3 leaks memory?

I love Safari but refuse to use it because of the maintenance required to keep it from using just about all of your memory over time.

I just wish they would allow new tabs on middle-clicking addresses from a menu like Firefox does. If it did that, I'd be happy. As it is, I have to open a new tab then click on the menu-address.

You can command click on bookmarks and they'll open in a new tab. I don't think they used to. Not quite middle click convenient but close.

So far so good on my end. But I do not like the fact that it broke by version of Saft. I may uninstall the beta unless a update for Saft does not come out in a few days.

Although it was a little disappointing as a "One More Thing.." item and I was hoping for something to really knock my socks off, Safari on Windows is great news. If it really performs as well as Jobs alluded to and demo'd, then I think they should have good success. It will be interesting to see what the masses think, as they will ultimately decide Safari on Windows' fate.

I went ahead and jumped on the bandwagon of windows users who would download this. I will say that it does load pages much faster than FF. Only thing I can complain about right now, is trying to open favorites from the bookmark bar into a new tab. You can not do this without right clicking and hitting new tab. In FF I can middle click to open anything into a new tab and also close tabs with middle click. I really enjoy that feature. I hope they add that or something. Otherwise I like how much faster it loads compared to other browsers.

I haven't installed on a Mac, but the Windows version has a bug reporting button, between the bookmark button and the location bar.

Although I hate the XP blue (or silver or green) menu bar and border, I'm not convinced that the iTunes/Safari look is the right thing to do. Like others here have said, they both look out of place in Windows.

Edit: text is rendered differently in Safari. It looks like OS X text rendering (which I prefer) but looks out of place in Windows, even with ClearType enabled.

Oh, and to anyone who gets frustrated about any issues they might encounter, keep in mind this is brand new and is a public beta.. :p ;) :D

So that's the plan. Apple isn't going to beat Microsoft, they're just going to consume them by making all the Apple apps be a layer that runs on top of Vista. Pretty soon people will get sick of paying the MS tax and just buy Apples.

Well I installed the beta on my mac. It seems maybe just a bit faster when downloading websites but feels more fluid when scrolling.

I leve the fact that you can now save image to any folder you want and not just the desktop. I needed that a lot.

I tried to access my bank's website, but It wont load right. I will still to use camino for that or IE in windows.

I think I'm going to wait a few months, let some of the bugs get ironed out and so forth. For now, Firefox is just great on my Windows box and I have no real, need to abandon it. If Safari ends up being better though then I have no problems eventually switching to it though.

For now though, as long as I'm not using IE, I'm happy! :D

The install isn't working on my mac, says my drive "doesn't meet the requirements".

Anyone have any ideas what might fix this, or is there just a problem with the installer Apple posted? I've seen some people get it working, but there are many posts online already with this same problem.

I downloaded it for Mac, and the only noticeable differences were drag & drop tabs and the new search. ...I was hoping for a new interface but it looks like I'm going to have to wait for Leopard. :(

I lol'd at how Safari took so long to load the Download page that stated Safari being the fastest HTML-loading browser... I lol'd a lot. Irony's a funny thing.

One thing I have noticed about Safari 3 on Mac is that it now has a dialogue box for multiple tabs, when you close Safari. Very handy. Now I won't accidentally hit AppleQ and lose work.

Sadly, as far as I know, it does not work with Shapeshifter. I'm currently testing this out.
