Put it on my old 2.4 GHz 512MB Dell with XP Home and it runs fine, better than Firefox in fact. Everything that works on Safari for Mac works on it too. Very impressive thus far.

Ok, the complaints I've had so far are that it doesn't look like a Windows app (which may be an advantage to some people, but isn't going to win any non-Mac-user converts), renders text too differently, and has a bottom right resize area

The good news is, it really is noticeably faster at loading pages than Firefox or IE7. And I mean noticeably faster. This isn't subjective, and it isn't just apple.com pages (by the way www.apple.com/startpage throws up a javascript error in IE7 meaning it doesn't render properly)

It hasn't crashed on me yet.

Very Nice

And yet iTunes is probably the most widely used music player app. I have a hard time reconciling "costing its reputation" with huge percentage of market share. I think this release is a great idea assuming they get out versions that work. For those owning and developing for iPhone, being able to run the same browser on a PC is hugely appealing.

if not for the sales of iPOD, lol
but you are probably right on that this is a good chance for ppl who develop apps for iPhone, for normal users,,... I will test later and make judgment, if its as slow and resource hungry as iTunes/QT, it won't be good enough for many window users.

Yep XP with SP2 Also crashes Safari when working with bookmarks

did anyone try to bookmark a page.. i am using xp sp1 ... safari crashes wheneveri try to bookmark a page.. crashed ten times in 5mins

Safari keeps crashing on my Dell with XP SP2. When trying to add a bookmark or importing bookmarks it totally hangs. Even after rebooting. Darn, I really want to use it.

Two Problems

One is this

safari_noweb.jpg

which is caused by the proxy requirement of SKY.com

but cannot be solved due to this little beauty;

@rses.

Hmmm, Safari for Windows is no Windowish.. although it's nice to get Aqua with Windows.. and it'll fit my Mac OS theme on Windows.. it's a fairly ugly design at the moment, but it's beta.

In terms of page speed, maybe it's just me.. but it seems less snappy then Safari 1.2, on my G3 iBook.. and I'm on a dual processer pentium 4 server, with about 4x the ram, at one point it was taking around 1/5th of my computers ram, with one tab open.. so so far.. i'm liking it any can't wait for the official release, but I'll probably hang on Opera for awhile until then.

I'm a bit dissapointed they cut Panther support off so quick though, especially when you give it to Windows users.. I'd love just a newer webkit version for Safari because the older one on Safari panther just sucks.

Been using it for a little while now on vista a couple of things:

...Back button on my mouse doesnt work in safari
...randomly when I try to load a webpage it will change http:// to feed://
...slooooooooooooooow just like itunes for windows
...theme doesn't match windows, im ok with that but it doesn't even match itunes 7 completely.
...no crashes
...when window is maximized it won't unhide my taskbar
...when reloading a page for updates it will initially take you back to your original spot on the page then when its finished loading takes you back to the top very annoying.

definitely needs some work

Another handy thing about Safari is that even if you've entered text on a page, regardless of how many tabs are open, when closing the page (Apple + W, not Apple + Q), it makes sure you want to do that.

And also; http://youtube.com/watch?v=IkeC7HpsHxo

lol.

Works perfectly for me in Windows XP. I'm REALLY liking the find feature, don't recall any other browser implementing the feature so elegantly. Windows opens much faster than in explorer or firefox for me so may make it the default web browser for a bit see how it goes :)

Mobile Tabs Is Awesome In Spite Of Crashes

ooh... oooh! try pulling a tab out of a window.. or into another window!

almost makes WWDC exciting.
Oh My GOD! The tabs lifted from a page miniaturize into thumbnails then upon release make a new window and may also be put back in another window of tabs. This is incredible for being able to reorganize a lot of open Safari windows and tabs. I'm sold. Can't ever go back to 2.0 now.

Yes it crashes and it fails to always go to a page without a push from the address bar. But this mobile tabs feature is KILLER.

Also just got an error message trying to post from S3. Refresh is broken too.

It took a bit before the page was up. Kept getting directed to Safari 1.0.2. I'm definitely going to have to play with this at home some.

I like consistency between browsers. Now I just need a convenient way to sync my bookmarks between my PowerBook and my PC at home/work.

Hopefully a revised .mac will handle the PC side of the bookmarks like it does already for Mac to Mac.

Memory usage

After about ten minutes using Firefox, IE 7 and Safari, I see memory usage:
Firefox: 74 MB
Safari: 56MB
IE7: 49MB

So it's not a memory hog, yet - it's too early to see if there's any memory leaks.

As for CPU, it's equivalent to IE and Firefox. Viewing my employers website, which has a Flash video, all three peak at about 23% CPU. Memory usage is up to 84MB for FF, 63MB for Safari, IE down to 39MB.

I suggest SJ spend 1/3 of his time using windows machine, so he has good idea of what windows users need.

...randomly when I try to load a webpage it will change http:// to feed://

Does it consistently do this for the same web pages? Do you have the RSS feed for those pages bookmarked? I've seen similar behavior when I've looked at the RSS feed for a page and then tried to go back later while the feed: address was still in the history.

I only downloaded the Safari file rather than Safari and Quicktime.. could that be the reason why it's crashing at startup?

I installed it, rebooted and tried to run the app. No luck. It refuses to open on my Power Mac G5. Oh well. Back to Firefox.

No Text

I have no text at all :( even no text in the menu bar at the top,
only text i can see is what is part of an image...

passwords or proxies aren't working right

using the new beta on an XP machine at work; I access the web through a proxy. safari seemed to automatically figure out my proxy configuration, and when I first tried to view a non-work site, it correctly asked me for my proxy login and password. I entered these and it let me view NY Times no problem.

only thing is, I told it to remember the login and PW for next time, and it failed to do so. so now everytime I open a new safari window and try to go to a non-work website, it asks me for the login and PW and doesn't remember the previous entries.

add to that some really weird password entry problems for pages like My Yahoo and my personal e-mail webmail interface. Yahoo repeatedly crashes Safari and I sent in an error report. I've given up on trying to get into my personal webmail.
