What's everyone thoughts? I know this will probably end in a war but can anyone here really say the XS Max is better than the note? I've owned both since launch day and can honestly say the only thing about the iPhone that's better is the battery life. Other than that Note absolutely destroys it in every way.

Am I the only one that thinks this?

Wrong, because it is ENTIRELY personal preference on the screen you like, natural colours or fake over saturated ones, and it’s tje exact same with the cameras.

Also iPhone for me any day, software support that will keep it going for 5 years at least which will keep its value higher.
You’ll be lucky if Samsung bothers to give the Note even 2 updates.

Security is the same in both, Apple has repeatedly allowed scrupulous apps on its store despite apparently checking all of them.
And Google has done the same plus it’s easy to install unchecked unknown apps onto Android. And Google Chrome won’t offer as many tracking blocking features as Safari.

Another key feature is iMessage, it’s totally and utterly baffling why a google has a real problem with making a half decent messaging app. It’s not difficult but they manage to make it extremely so. iMessage just annihilates Google Android in this area.

You can't just compare specs/features. It's the OS is where the issue is with samsung. Their hardware is great but the max beats the note in all the important areas for my needs and for most people's needs. If the note filled all the ticked boxes then more would be buying the devices.

What a daft comment, you do know Apple is still supporting the 5S and that at its recent keynote, they got up on stage and told the world how they want iPhones to last several years, including software support.

Tell me, are Samsung still providing the latest Android versions for the Galaxy Note 3?? Launched the same time as the iPhone 5S.

Man you REALLY hate google lol.

Another hyperbolic statement.

Given that you only list two options, love or hate, it wouldn’t be presumptuous of me or others to assume that you love google.

Personally, I don’t care enough about google to love or hate it. After their last set of privacy scandals, I elected to stop using any of their products. It seems that running a google free iphone offers its own set of benefits, one of them being improved battery life.

Lol, Does that REALLY bother you?

I'm not talking about past phones. I'm talking about newer generation of phones. My note 5 got updated to oreo eventhough it was 3 years old. So who knows about note9?

My note 2 is still functioning with many latest apps (even though it had a much older version of os). I bet the iphone 4 if it is still functioning is saddled with outdated apps which cannot be updated to latest version. Now 4s/5/5s will suffer the same fate. That's the difference between iOS and android.

The S7 edge came out the year after the note 5 and only received to major OS updates. It’s not getting android Pie.

I’ve had every galaxy besides the 5. I’m a big android fan. But let’s be honest. An older iPhone is far better to use than an older android. I had an old galaxy s4 in a drawer and fired it up last year. Complete mess. Considering most people upgrade every year or 2, it’s no big deal. Anyone who wants a phone for 3 of more years owes it to themselves to buy an iPhone.

I entirely agree with this post!

I am skeptical on this. Every new iOS version makes older iphone slower. Fast forward 3 years and the note 9 that stayed on oreo will perform as fast as when it was released. XS will get slower every year due to forced o/s upgrade.

Two great phones. Pricing stupid for both, instead of bickering between android / apple users , we should be getting angry at the prices.

I love tech, but these companies are taking the ***** with smartphone pricing . In the scheme of things, my iMac Pro is a bargain, with the iToy now coating £1500

I got my 512gb note 9 at $450 on a 2 years contract. XS Max 512gb was going at $1100 on the same contract.

Think you should be more angry at iPhone prices. :)

Given how iOS 12 has been reported to breathe new life into older iPhones, there’s a chance this trend from an iOS perspective may be reversed. I guess time will tell.

An iPhone 6 with 1 gb of ram is usable on iOS 12. That says a lot. I have a v20 with the snapdragon 820 (flagship chip in its day) and it is absolutely dreadful to use now.

The note 9 is a lot cheaper here. My 256GB max cost £1,249. The 512GB note 9 costs £1,099 here. Which is £150 cheaper. We can’t get a note 9 for £450 over here.

No sure what was the problem with your note9 or s9. Most probably it is isolated case.

This is my battery life of my Note9. And I'm a very heavy users with at least 280 apps and games (excluding themes icon packs and live wallpaper). I have lots of automation setup with Tasker too.

Tell that to all the users complaining about battery life on AndroidCentral especially after the recent update. There was no issues with the device. The Note 9 does not perform as good as a 4000mah should in real life usage after this update.

Same usage, 30% note 9, 70% iphone xs max. Yeah, I know where the optimization is being done correctly at.

So many comments in here just make me laugh. Seems none of you have owned a recent Android phone, or iPhone.

I just had a Note 9 for a full month. It was an awesome experience other than a few bugs and battery life. Sadly, I did return it for an Xs Max, that is the best phone I have owned even over the Note 9.

The Note 9, had issues and here they were. One was the battery life. For a 4000 mah battery, it did not last as long as it should have. At first, I did get a full day, with around 50% left. But after the first update, it dropped to 30% from 6am to 7pm. Sometimes I had to charge it up mid day just to get through the evening. Accubattey did not show any apps draining it. Android System however was draining it a bunch. The camera has a lot of freezing up issues. And this is a known issue with 15 pages of comments currently on Samsung Community forums of people having issues. I didn't notice it till I had my camera running in 4k for a few minutes and then it just started to freeze.

Also, I had worse anxiety with that device having to constantly watch the battery, and find what apps were killing it, or fixing app issues. Yes, you can customize the background and stuff, but you know what, that wasn't worth it when I spent a lot of time fixing the issues. It is similar to Windows vs Mac.

I loved the screen on the Note 9, and so do I like the Max screen. Obviously the MAx has the best screen out of all phones per displaymate. The headphone jack was nice, used it a few times. I hate the curved screen on the sides. Still had issues setting off the side bar with it.

The Max on the other hand, is a smooth experience. It is faster, battery life just kills the Note 9. I have 70% at the end of the day after the same type of usage I did with the Note 9. I have no issues with any of my Apps, and FaceID 2nd gen works great compared to the X I had. So far, I only have one complaint on the iPhone and it's the true tone gets on my nerves. I turned it off and all is good now. I do wish Apple in the mail app would allow swipe to the next message instead of the arrows at the top. Makes it easier to go between them. I have no wifi or cellular signal issues like some say they are having. Mine is stronger than my Note 9 or my work phone s9+ I have now. I get faster speeds on it than either of those.

Pick the phone you like, and I am sure it will do what you want and make you happy. But my opinion is, if you want a nice build quality, reliability, and the phone just works good at all things, the iPhone is your choice. The Note 9, or any Android phone for that matter, is for those that like to tinker and fix things or customize things all the time. That is not me as my job is in IT and I am tired of fixing things on my own stuff when I do it every day for other people.

Hope this helps some make a choice. No favoritism here, I just prefer the iPhone at this time.

I do agree 100% with the battery issue you mentioned. After spending about 3 days with the iPhone I see the battery life is insanely better. I knew from the get go the notes battery life was trash like I stated in the original post. I know exactly what you mean when you say by mid day your looking at it thinking it's never gonna make it to the end of the day. Usually it will with like 2% to spare though while the iPhone has been averaging about 50% 60% by the end of the day.

I have to say though one thing about the iPhone which has always been the case which has a lot to to do with why the battery lasts so much longer. It does not multitask and by that I do not mean split screen and all that I mean for instance I have an app I use to stretch and it has a built in timer that tells you how long to hold the stretches, I use it on the note, start the timer and switch to a different app then go back and see where I'm at. To my surprise I did that with the iPhone and the timer had stopped counting and the whole app had to reload.

Same with another app I have that I use to control appliances in my house. With the note I hit the power button for my dehumidifier let's say and then I quickly switch to another app while it says "thinking" a second later the dehumidifier will go on while if you do that with the iPhone, if you switch before it's completed the task it will stop and then when you go back to the app it will have to be restarted from scratch. Yes it's smoother and has better battery life but there are reasons for that, it doesn't really multitask or keep multiple apps open and if it does it drastically reduces there resources. The note has a lot more stuff going on in the background which is why it's battery life isn't as great.

As I've come to realize they both definitely have their strengths and weaknesses I definitely like both and will probably keep both but if I could only own one it would most likely be the note.

Also for the couple people that say Android is so far behind.. Are you kidding me?? iOS 12 is the first to have grouped notifications and still doesn't have a clear all button or even a swipe to clear and lets not start with the no clear all for recent apps. As I said iPhone is good no doubt but to say they are ahead seriously come on that's just a blatant lie. Everyone knows Apple is always playing catch up, let's not start with how long it took them to get AMOLED screens and wireless charging.

I just bought the XS Max w/the Apple Blue Leather Case and am LOVING it! For the past weeks have been on the Note 9. To its credit, the Note 9 is an amazing phone, can't praise it enough. Since I plan on getting the iPad Pro 12" 2018, it's nice to be on the same ecosystem. Since I love the 2017 model, I see no reason this one wouldn't be great, and there are no serious large android competitor tablets. The Tab S4 was tried and returned.

I also just found that I never used the S-Pen except for novelty, and I have a laptop and desktop. It just gives off a high-end vibe, and there are many Pro's to this decision.

Pros (Why I got the XS Max):
-Just has an amazing build quality/appearance
-Sound is incredible and better IMO (many A/B tests)
-Silky Smooth navigation with iOS 12
-Annual upgrade eligible w/Verizon
-Same price as my Note 9
-No matching tablet
-Face ID seems more secure
-Max has nearly the same resolution; more if Note 9 stays at default
-Bixby is embarrassing; and yes I know the button can be remapped
-True Tone & 120 refresh; just looks better reading
-Syncs with my iTunes Library and auto converts my lossless to fit at good bit-rates

Cons? (Why I loved the Note 9)
-Android has come a LONG way and is very impressive and huge customization
-Love downloading new themes (Halloween, Fall, Space, etc)
-Unlocks faster with Intelligent Scan, but has proven to be far less secure (eyes closed; no 3D mapping)
-Very fast and powerful; almost no lag even with all the themes
-Incredible battery; even with heavy gaming lasted me two days
-Can't change the appearance of iOS icons, so repetitive/stale

Desires
-Fingerprint embedded to display
-NO Notch OR Bezels
-Customization themes on iOS (imagine the profit?!)

At this stage of Apple vs Samsung, the competition is fierce. Apple definitely can't rely on its loyalty like in the past. If the S/Note 10 can meet my desires in a year, it stands a good chance at my business.

The iPhone does not have 120 refresh on the screen itself. Only on the touch sensitivity.

I like iOS. I like MacOS. I don't like Android. I don't like Google. I've liked every iPhone since the 3GS. I really like my XS Max.
I don't care about intricate comparisons between phones and their megapixels and flip-flops and whatnot.
Why can't people just be happy with their phone and not start the "my phone choice is better than your phone choice" argument again and again?
Maybe they're not really happy with their phone?

At this stage of smartphones, I believe the pinnacle user experience has been established. At this stage we're just seeing incremental % improvements, not revolutions. I can't imagine someone not being happy with a Note 9 or XS Max. It comes down to your favorable ecosystem, both very extensive, and if you like the Apple Watch, very obvious choice.

I find it interesting people are flipping out on prices, yet mine Note 9 was 1250+taxes. I have a colleague mention that the XS Max price is just completely out of reach, yet at $1.60/day for a device payment plan, he pays $4-8 a day on Starbucks. Apparently $6K over 24 months is perfectly acceptable versus a device used all day.

Where I live the note 9 is cheaper than the Xs Max. The note 9 starts at £899 and tops off at £1099. The max starts at £1099 and goes up to £1445. So there is quite a difference in price here. However like you said it’s more about the ecosystem so I paid more for the max.
