So I took mine to the Apple Store today.

Person at the door asked what my query was, told him, he looked at my phone and said 'it's because you have night mode on' then checked and realised I didn't. He said first time he's seen that, so he took me up stairs to the technical folk to join the queue and they too thought I had night mode on at first.

One then disappeared with my phone for a short while and returned saying they'll swap it (well as I got it online, I had to be refunded for the online one, then I buy the replacement).

This one is night and day better. I kept trying to convince myself when I had the original that the yellow tint was going away, and it wasn't that bad anymore. But it really was that bad. When the technical guy put my iPhone next to his iPad to record the serial number, it was like I had night mode on!

There's just more contrast to the screen now. It's easier to read too, as I felt the yellow tint was making black font on white background more difficult to read, as the black was lacking contrast and seemed more dark dark grey than black.

Now, there is still a very slight yellow tint to the top, but it's not noticeable in portrait mode and in landscape, only if you really look. It only covers the very top part of the screen (basically the menu bar bit). This is a non issue compared to my previous one, where the yellow tint started around the bottom quarter of the phone so was very prominent.

Glad I went in and got it swapped. No complaints now (touch wood)!

I'm glad you get a better device. I have what you describe in the end, the slight yellow tint on top. Annoying in landscape mode...

Well i think the "yellow" top is more like backlight "problem" than display...because my old 5S had it,i saw a lot 5S with that problem + my SE has it too...

I'd get over it if I were you. If you got it swapped, the replacement might have the major yellow tint I had with my first, which was making reading black fonts on white more difficult.

I'm oblivious to the tint at the very top unless I go looking for it.

My friend bought an SE too and send a picture prove that he got a very good screen (no yellow lines etc). The black dots are just dust not dead pixels

Actually i'm a little bit jelly.. :D

Yup yellow band on left very top all the way across.

At the top left upper corner its the reflection of the ceiling lamp he has in his room.

The top its not yellow too me,its less lighter i think (but its very-very common at 5/5S/SE models maybe all 5/5S/SE model got it).

I looking for yellow spots and stuff. And didn't find anything so thats why this screen is "good enough" for me.

But i will see it "live" tomorrow so i will post an update about the "yellowgate" :D

UPDATE #1 - I asked him to make one closer picture (i want to buy it for my gf so thats why i am looking for good screen) And i think its more than enough for me especially if i look the pics in this topic..What do you think?

That's really great. I'm glad you got it taken care of. I'm very fortunate that I haven't had any of the issues people have described here. The nearest Apple store is a two-hour drive.

I still see some yellow but to be honest it's not bad and certainly not worth returning in my opinion.

I see it, but I'm looking for it. If you asked 10 people to take a look at the screen and say what they think, I imagine 10 of them would say it looks fine.

Also, I'm reminded of Muzafer Sherif's Autokinetic Effect Experiments with the dot of "moving" light that isn't actually moving at all.

The gold SE the I got from Swappa yesterday suffers from the yellow screen. As other members here stated previously, it's not terrible when you're just using the phone. However, when I compare it to my 6s and 6, you can certainly see the yellow tint stand out from the other displays. Plus, I have noticed there is yellow band at the top of the screen as well. Everything works perfectly with the phone, but since I purchased it second hand, I'm probably going to end up selling it.

Thanks for the answers guys. Yes,i look my picture again and again..aaand i think i can see the yellow thing now but its more obvious on photos (and even on pics its not bad at all) and i check a some SE in the Apple Store and they have worse screen than this SE so i think i'll keep it and dont play the iPhone SE screen lottery :D

There is an app called "dead spotter" perfect to check your screen, the app displays fullscreen white background and RGB colors.

Another trick would be to save a white background image from google image and open fullscreen in photo app.

Well I got my replacement. It's much better now. Here it is next to my laptop, which has a nice even display in person. The SE is still a hair yellowy on the edges, but at least it's not like the one I replaced where it was almost jaundicey all over the display. Not as good as my Xperia phone display still, but oh well. I'm just so tired of the Apple lottery. Come to think of it, I never once had an Apple product through the years that was issue free the first time. Always had to exchange at least once...

By the way.. just an fyi, some Apple stores have extended their return/exchange for the SE due to the shortage. A few NYC stores confirmed this when I tried to just return on the 14th day last week. The store managers confirmed, and so today, on the 18th day for me, I was indeed able to exchange without issue.

Im curious if the screen on the SE will be more susceptible to yellowing over time? My old iPhone 5 has been my wife's phone since I got the iPhone 6. I never noticed yellow on the screen when I used it. Now, the edges of the screen are badly yellow and seems to be worsening. Not sure what causes this, but it makes me wonder if the SE will do the same over time.

I was wondering if silver Iphones were less prone to this yellow tint issue as they have a white background and then more noticeable upon first use.

I got a second Spacegrey SE which is worse than my first one :)

I have gone through 6 unlocked white iPhone SE. Every single one had a yellow tint at the top

Oh dear lol you're resilient:)

Now that I've a tsmc cpu I'm not really keen to play lottery again.

I wonder if they can just change the screen and not the whole phone, i guess I need to book genius to find out...

The screen of my iPhone SE is COMPLETELY yellow, it's ridiculous. iPhone 4 on the left, both at ~ 50% screen brightness. Night Shift on the SE is OFF.

Opinions?

Hi Gim,
mine too has the same yellow screen as though the night mode is on, did you manage to get yours fixed, will take it to a apple store when i return back to usa, currently in spain.

here's my SE next to my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. you guys know which is which...

reminds me of old newspaper or coffee stains

I have also both and same as yours
SE has yellow tint while Xperia Z3 Compact more blue one
I think i like more SE color/uniformity, its more realistic!
You should compare to another SE phone to see if anything goes wrong with uniformity
Its inherent to screen panel technology, some panel looks more yellow than blue

I got my SE on the release day (pre-ordered) in the Middle-East...
Serial started with F1 (China, Zhengzhou - Foxconn) and production date was 6th week of 2016.
The top of the screen had the yellow band, which has faded after a few days...
After a while (about 2 weeks) I started to notice that it's actually not just a band, but the whole upper half of the screen was brownish and also a whole yellowish-greenish frame was present.

I'd waited close to 4 weeks before going to the Apple Store the day before yesterday:
I'd looked at the display models (all colour variants) and all showed the same symptoms as mine.
We'd started with the Genius and he said that it is a "known" thing with the supplier and of course I can get mine replaced free of charge, but the replacement will be the same. He also showed me his which was actually a bit worse than mine.
He said that there is only one replacement possibility free of charge and as the supplier is the same for the ME region it does not matter if I come back in 6 months, most probably it will be the same. I'd be better off if I could get it replaced in the EU or in the States (screen-only of course over there) as those are from different suppliers.

I insisted on the replacement and got a brand new week 12 unit (same F1 plant ID) which I have to admit is much better.
(I don't see the brownish-yellowish band on the top in portrait and is slightly noticeable in landscape.)

Also as a side thing: I'd asked about the replacement of the battery of my wife's 5S (2.5 years old) and to my surprise we got a brand new unit for the price of the battery replacement. This unit has also the same yellowish top as my SE, but barely noticeable. One really has to look for it.

Overall in my case I was lucky. My replacement unit is much better than the first unit.
Also I'd checked my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 and with a completely white screen those also show similar symptoms, but I'd never noticed those. Another thing is that I have transition glasses which highly enhance contrast and have a permanent brown tint due to prolonged high heat related damage to the material. Without them I really have to look for the yellowish dis-colouration.

I was very pleased with the support I got at the Apple Store.
