Yellow Tint!

For a second I did notice a little bit of a yellow tint, specifically right around the App Store icon, but now it just doesn't bother me.

I did black and white screen testing and I don't have backlight bleeding and there were no yellow splotches on a white screen. I did turn up the brightness a little bit more and that actually made the screen look cooler in shade.

I just think all these Samsung screens are warm.

Really don't feel like going to my local Apple store... they employees are so rude and incompetent.

LOL!

Sorry... I'm not laughing at your misfortune. That does suck. But there are three Apple stores within 10 miles of me, and you just described all of them :)

Hope it works out for you.

This thread is crazy. I think there are several things going on.

For one there are people who have displays that are clearly more yellow than they should be.

Secondly I think that there are some people who aren't used to a warmer display.

Also I think that there are some people who might take a picture of it and it shows up as more yellow because their camera has the wrong white balance, leading people to suggest there is a bigger issue.

Lastly I think the differing severity of the yellow could be due to the brightness setting on the iPads so if you go to the store and you try to swap for a better one it might look different simply based on the brightness setting on each iPad.

The bottom line is for most people they won't notice this unless they side-by-side compared to an iPad 2. There is no way to tell from a photograph how bad your display is. The only thing you can do is decide for yourself, so stop posting pictures of your iPad on this forum. Hyper analyzing it like people have been here is not a good idea for anybody.

If you like your iPad then keep it and if you don't then return it, end of story.

Let's say reports (like the one I am about to do), come out and show that the majority of the new iPads are closer to the 6500k color temp (which is what everything is calibrated for). Would some of you that are complaining still be mad?

I keep reading "nice and cool". The "cool" color temp is not "nice", if you are looking for accuracy to watch movies etc....

I bet if I did a poll on what setting the majority of people complaining (again, not saying some don't have issues) TV picture mode is set to. They will all say "Vivid" or "Normal", pretty much any option that is not "Movie/Theater/Cinema" (which 9 times out of 10 is the most accurate out of the box for a TV, but that's not saying much).

Quick (without google) what does the Brightness Setting on a TV actually control? :)

@ovrlrd Dude chill if you are OK why are you reading. This post is for people who see yellow and want to fix it not just gripe. I paid 700 and I expect it to not be yellow

I just thought the thread is interesting and I thought I would offer some insight. You're welcome to feel however you want, but I am going to still offer my opinion, thanks.

I'd also give my opinion. Its harder to tell when there is bright light everywhere.

At home its 100% noticeable for me. Try going to like a place like starbucks and its totally unbearable and worth going into tears for me. But I hate yellow light.

But there are people okay with piss light. jk =D

Depends on your lighting and peoples mood. I like my glass to be more clear without the defects. The thing is most people have an Iphone as well, and it makes Apple's bad QC on this even more noticeable. =D

But shame on the people who don't notice it on their own and want to return it based on our thoughts =D. But I'm one of those guys who point out flaws and make people go arg, until they go crazy over something they didn't notice, IE scratch or paint chips or defects etc. But like some of you guys who post the threads I understand the urges =D. Plus nothing gets fixed if we don't complain about it.

Also I gave up on returns. There are so many shades of yellow tints. I almost got one that was less yellow but it got to me cause top was white and bottom was yellow =/. I'm just going to wait for the next batch.

Nice find, I dont mind it at all and that is spot on plus colors pop more with a warmer screen. If there is no bad bleeding like last years I'll be on my way tomorrow to pick one up, all signs are the "backlight bleed" problems are addressed this time around.

If this supposed yellow tint is the only problem people can find on this years model I'll take it.

Still backlight bleeding...

Again, if what most of you are saying what is "yellow" is actually just a warmer color temp. Then it is NOT a defect.

Who knows, maybe someone at apple said "Hey, maybe with this ultra high resolution screen, photographers and videophiles may find a use for it. Let's spec the screens closer to Rec 709, d65, etc...."

If you have a decent TV (say like a recent Panasonic Plasma), if it is not currently in "theater/movie/cinema" mode. Change it to that. Once done, if you really don't like the results, think it is to "warm/red/less pop/whatever", then you have just gotten so used to "cool" color temps.

From a white balance/grayscale point of view. There is no place for a "cool" color temp. The only reason that is an option on TV's is to attract customers in the Big Box stores.

I know I keep reverting to comparing it to a TV. But in reality it is one in the same. If you like the "torch mode" that most TV's default to, then that is really all one would know. So when they see a really blue white (which can look like a very "bright white"), they think that is how it should be.

From nearly all of the pictures I have seen in this thread, the new iPad looks much closer to 6500k (which is what calibrators calibrate to).

I got to busy tonight, but I do plan on taking readings of the new iPad with my TV calibration software and meter. I have .mp4's of my test patterns so it should be a piece of cake.

Hi-res image http://media.digitalphotogallery.com/cswfymthaxhy/downloads/4svsnewipad.jpg

My pre-ordered iPad 32GB WiFi arrived yesterday and the screen is very yellow. Above is a comparison between my iPhone 4S and the new iPad. I own quite a bit of the latest Apple gear, iMac 27", MacBook Pro 17", MacBook Air 11", iPhone 4S, iPad 2, etc and compared to all of those it looks really yellow. The only thing it's close to is the old 23" Apple Cinema Display from 2007 which I know is very faded and on it's last legs. I had the same problem with the iPhone 4 and waited it out with the promise that it would correct itself in time, which it never did. Rather than make that mistake again I'm off to the Apple store as soon as it opens to try an replace it, has anyone in the UK successfully returned a new iPad with yellow display for a something more pleasing?

ipad 2 and new ipad owner.

So many oddballs complaining about frustrated ACTUAL owners of ipad 3gens with Yellow screens. You guys are being ****ty.

Let me ask this: Have you ever seen a thread devoted to people angry they got a cooler screen? No, you haven't. Because people don't complain about a cooler screen.

There's a reason the yellow screen sucks... because it's freaking yellow! And reduces contract and washes over everything. It's certainly not ideal for a device such as an ipad.

I'm pretty much resigned to getting my money back, but I'm heading into the apple store now to see what they have to say.

I will post back for Actual owners on my experience.

I'm also using Color Profiles on my 1st gen iPad. It works really nice. Maybe everything looks darker but I prefer cool and dark screen than warm and bright.

Its funny man. I know you. I've seen you. Inevery single thread about yellow screens, at every single launch of every single new iDevice. This issue isn't new with Apple. This didnt just start happening. Everytime Apple launches a new product, people complain about yellow screens. And everytime they do, a guy like you tries to claim its intentional.

Its not intentional. The screen should be bluish. It should not be yellow. The end.

Although usually true when shipped directly from China, a lot of the preorders have been sitting in the US for almost a week at FedEx centers and probably sitting in China for another week. I hope it's just the glue drying but there have been some cases of a permanent yellow tint. OP, try not holding it next to another iPad and see if the yellow tint is there.

I found a way to fix this <JOKE> But i actually have done this :¬)

I Jail broke my old IPAD
Installed "Color Profiles" from Cydia
Destroyed my nice IPAD OLD - WHITE profile to look like my new IPAD NEW - YELLOW
and now it dont bother me looking at them side by side :¬)

On serious note looks like IPAD NEW JB is on the way so...
We can correct the colour balance with out any apple help.

:¬)

Mine has yellow tint as well. Normally this wouldn't bug me, however on the right hand center there is a portion of the screen that isn't yellow, it's noticeably cooler than the rest of the screen. When scrolling on a white txt background it becomes very annoying.

Notice this doesn't change as I lower brightness. I know on my NEC panel on my computer uniformity becomes more consistent as you lower brightness. Not the case of the iPad... So could this be glue waiting to dry ? Or should I play my cards and gamble for a replacement hoping it will be better?

The first batch of screens were meant to be from Samsung (cooly calibrated screens) weren't they. Majority of the screen posted thus far are yellow (only seen 1 cool one) and I don't trust those who say theirs is fine because in most cases, its hard to notice unless you directly compare to an iPhone or another iPad.

Does that mean Apple has simply switched to warm calibrations in this revision?

I havent noticed till compared side by side with my ipad 2 and iphone 4... Mine does have the yellowish tint... Or more like and ivory white than a cooler white...

This is a build week 7 ipad ( 16 gb wifi white )

So what are we all doing? Return? Cydia&color profile it? Just go with it?

I noticed my yellow tint straight away when I turned it on for first time and went through setup I haven't even bothered to compare the display to my iPhone as it is noticeable.

I'm gonna give it till next weekend to see if it sorts itself out an then think about going in an havin a word

This type of thing actually happens quite often to TV calibrators. Calibrate a customer's TV, and the customer does not like the results. The far majority of the population think "brighter is better", "the TV needs POP", etc.... So they have gotten used to the "cool" color temp. Once calibrated, the image becomes much "warmer". And the customer may think it doesn't look good.

This.

Over the years people have been slowly brainwashed by computer/laptop use into thinking cooler whites are colour correct. They are not. The phenomenon is particularly noticeable in the way people have their LCD TVs set up. Too bright, too cool. And they're looking for the same in their iPad. Wrongly.

Just got back from the Apple store in Brighton. I took the yellow iPad out and compared to the display models and it looked terrible! I explained the problem to the staff and they were really friendly about it. I must admit I was expecting some resistance, but they immediately acknowledged that the yellow screen looked wrong and let me check the display of the replacement. This one looks great, no sign of yellow and even better colour than my iPad 2. I used this as an opportunity to upgrade from WiFi 32GB to 4G 32GB but I doubt that made any difference to screen quality. If you have the yellow screen and you hate it like I did then I'd make a trip to the Apple store ASAP. I'm really glad I did as having a yellow iPhone 4 in the past ruined it for me and I know that this would have been the same if I'd kept the faulty one.

For what its worth my sons iPod touch came a little yellow. I thought ****. Looked at it a while later and all gone, it's not yellow. so it does happen and it can clear up like others have said.

Also on my 4s the auto brightness sometimes made my screen appear yellow'ish. Turning it off showed the display lost the tint and went whiter. The latest 5.1 update seemed to fix this. Auto brightness now works as it should. .

I think the yellow screen stuff is mostly overblown. You see variation on all screens. My Macbook Air has a "yellower" screen than my old PC notebook, but really its more accurate and once you get used to it the other one looks too blue. Now I do think that there are some iPads out there that are overly yellow, but you also have ones that are overly blue. These are mass produced so you're going to see these variences, but most are fine and in the normal range and not overly yellow or blue. Like I said before I do believe that there are some screens out there that are too yellow and I would say return them, but just because your iPad has a yellower tint than your iPhone does not make that screen defective.
