No I’m not on any employee account. I do have a simple choice promo account however I have used the iPhone upgrade program a number of times previously and it worked so there shouldn’t be anything different now. If there was a material change it should have been clearly communicated to plan holders prior.
I have a strong feeling this error is related to older plans somehow. T-Mobile always doesn't honor some promotions on their old plans. I am thinking IUP is going under the "promotions" category somehow in their system and it won't allow us to upgrade on the older plans. I used the IUP last year as well but T-Mobile has been "pushing" customers to upgrade to their newer plans since the last year so I believe they're messing with us somehow and want us to change plans. I also have the simple choice plan on my t-mobile account as an employee.

T-Mobile states IUP has to do with Apple side.
Yeah the reps are blaming "Apple's systems" which even if its true this has nothing really to do with IUP (at least in my case) because I am trading in the phone through Apple and just trying to get the bill credits through T-Mobile which according to the terms and conditions I am eligible for:

° T-Mobile/Sprint Special Trade-in Deal: $700 credit based on a Magenta Max rate plan and trade-in of iPhone X in good condition and (i) $200 Apple instant trade-in credit and (ii) $500 T-Mobile/Sprint bill credit. Buy an iPhone 13 Series or iPhone 12 series and trade in a qualifying device (iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max) to receive (i) Apple instant trade-in credit and (ii) an additional $500 back in bill credits on a Magenta Max rate plan or $200 back in bill credits on all other rate plans

I had the same issue. On my iPhone it defaulted to T Mobile however I am still on the old sprint plan.

I logged into my desktop computer, and was able to get my account verified through Sprint. It allowed me to complete the process, it verified my account also allowed me to authorize it via Apple Card. I’m all set for the 17th. Give that a try.

Your Account Status:
You have an outstanding balance on your T-Mobile account.
Wireless number: xxx-xxx-xxxx
You can still purchase this iPhone. Please note you have a balance with T-Mobile. To
pay your balance, contact T-Mobile or visit an Apple Store.

What balance? My Account shows $0. The only thing I have is a S21 that costs me $3 monthly.

I reached out to @TMobileHelp on Twitter, and after about an hour a rep looked into my account and determined that I had an issue where my account was associated with my employer (likely from an old discount program) and this somehow [recently] changed the coding on my account such that it wasn’t an individual account. Apple doesn’t allow business/government accounts to participate in the upgrade program, which is why it was failing.

The rep was able to fix this for me, and I’ve been able to finish setting up the pre-order; I’d recommend reaching out via Twitter and mentioning this as a possibility if you’ve ever had your account associated with an employer.

Nope. I never had mine associated with one. So I don't know.

If they don't get this fixed in the next 24 hours I think I am just going to process the pre-order setup and trade in through Apple without connecting it to T-Mobile (which does work) and then try to work the eligible promotion through T-Mobile after the fact. I am definitely entitled to the bill credits per the terms and conditions. It doesn't actually change the price you have to pay through Apple since the T-Mobile bill credits are processed separately through https://promotions.t-mobile.com which actually makes it more confounding that the system won't currently connect because they could always just deny the promotion later instead of blocking it at the pre-order reservation step but regardless at least this way I can pre-order the phone.

The only downside is that having to try and get the promotion after the fact will probably be more difficult but to be honest anything dealing with T-Mobile is relatively difficult.

That is interesting because I was told the same thing but they didn't offer to fix it. They just blamed Apple for the problem.

Are you still a military/government or other employee account or was it an old association that was removed?

I’m a government employee, but haven’t been on a government plan for years. The rep said they were able to change my account type from government to individual, while still keeping my status as a state employee on the account.

Thanks for the information. I guess I will try again and hopefully get a rep who will be able to do the same for me

Sorry, got this gem of a response from T-Mobile.

It doesn’t make sense. There is a disconnect between eligibility and supported - T-Mobile insists that the is nothing wrong with my account yet I am having this issue - they want to talk to AppleCare which is just a waste of time at this point. To move to magenta max would basically cost me 100 more than what I am paying now - I’m so frustrated at this point I want to just leave T-Mobile

i know we can say oh first world problems and in someways it totally is but the failure to communicate- lackluster responses from representatives- horrible 5G speeds - mixed messages, countless data leaks and upgrade issues every year… it’s just ridiculous.

that is super weird, to be honest as so far I was thinking this is related to older plans but I guess a lot of people having the same issue no matter what plan or Employee or not.
I actually changed my plan finally, and it still doesn’t work

That’s weird. I’m a public employee and have never had this issue before
