They killed most of the old grandfathered plans a year or two ago (including all the family plans FWIW) so you likely wouldn't have it. I'm luckily still on the $7.99 old Google Play Music All Access individual plan. Hoping they forgot about us.
Mate, they are coming for you. That much you can count on.

Google premium is $2 in India. They make you pay more money based on your income for the same product.

Is this even legal?

I guess use VPN and sign-up from India and pay only $2 per month.

YT Premium is still the best value for money subscription for m

Is it?

If I may ask...

How many people in your family?
How many average hours do each of them spend watching YT.

Lets say it's 4 members @ 5 hours a month (which I think is very low). That is just a hair over $1/hour of content. Considering what you would pay for a family of 4 to go see a movie in a theater (2-3 hours of content) the cost really isn't high at all.

Yes, it is higher than most streaming services but if YT content is what you prefer then it seems to make sense if you use it any more than my example.

The cheapest I can get YT premium is $38, it is almost more than I pay for max, Disney, Netflix, SkyShowtime, viaplay and a local streaming service combined.

Really?

Prices are on the rise everywhere and currency exchange rates move all the time. This shouldn't be a surprise. I'm no fan of the parent company but I don't see this as "screwing" anyone.
There’s pretty much a 0% chance they will raise the fees paid to content creators in the same way. There’s your screwee, right there.

”Legal”? New level of entitlement achieved 🥳 The rate in India is already nearly double what you pay in a western nation when you take average income into account. You want them to pay 10x what you pay just to make you feel better? Well done, I never thought people would go this far but you proved me wrong.

honestly i would pay for an ad-free experience, if they had a plan with just that in my country. i don't need the other stuff and it is too expensive if you only want to get rid of ads. and now it is even more expensive.

guess i'll continue to use adblockers. ads only really bother me the few times i use youtube on devices the blockers don't work. (which leads me to just not use it there)

I just airplay from my brave browser on iPad Pro. Way too many subscriptions to avoid ads.
brave does not have YT ad blocker for ipad. Tried may - nothing worked.
Once they start injecting the ads into the videos themselves, something they are currently trialing, it'll be interesting to see if the ad-blocking community can defeat that.
Adblocker for my TV already skips there in video ads. No issues there.

That's different. What happens now, when an ad is triggered, it pauses the video and then plays a separate clip showing the ad, before bouncing back to your video and resuming playback. This ad clip is what ad blockers trick YT into skipping and keeping your video rolling without interruption. When the ad is embedded, there's no clip to detect, the ad is in the video as part of the entire encode - with no likely way to pause or skip. I say likely because you never know what the industrious internet community can come up with to counter it.

IMO, life is too short to watch commercials, so even if they do raise the price for the US, I will keep it as I watch far too much YouTube to not have Premium.
I should have it based on the insane amount of content I watch. However, I can’t bring myself to pay for it just for ads when I can skip in 5 seconds.

Honestly it is the same as with Netflix trying to get rid of account sharing. Alphabet will make more money in the end. Just look at Netflix's account registrations, it rose significantly since imposing the "new rules". People will put up with it. Always the same story....

Great...
I watch lots of youtube on mobile, therefore I kinda have to swallow the price increase.

I'm no tinkerer, so creating weird dns filtering systems is out of the question.

If I watched youtube mostly in browser, though, I'd ditch the subscription.

Anyway if Youtube was hellbent on keeping Youtube Music (to keep the price high), the least they could do would be making it more usable.

The way it mixes regular and music playlists is one of the most stupid things ever; it creates a jumbled mess.
If they separated the 2 (while retaining the same account), I'd use it at least a little, as some of the playlists aren't that bad.

Nice try. The Euro has been gaining value against the dollar for at least two years now.

They've figured out a way to screw people that makes sense in certain cases. It would be far more costly for me to waste any of my time watching YouTube commercials than it would be to pay the extra each month for Premium. Time is money, and these companies that offer ad free plans know it full well. Luckily, I have an ad blocker that works like a charm and has for several months now. Otherwise, I'd be paying for Premium without a doubt.

I watch mostly on Apple TV, so that is not really an option. And the sites are getting better and better at circumventing the ad blockers on PC browsers, which turns it into a perpetual game of offense vs. defense.

As you say, life is too short. As I get older I'm starting to see the economic pressures of influence. At some point, the best choice becomes to stop watching TV entirely. If they are just going to keep tipping it more and more towards ads, the only reasonable choice is to stop using it. Piracy isn't teaching them the right lesson.

Would like to know what happened to YouTube premium lite from 2021. Trialed in a few countries with no Music option just ad free. Never expanded.

Same thing that's happening to every other individual service choice. Companies have realized (all over again) that it's more profitable to bundle. Then they can raise the price and blame all the cool new stuff they've added (that you're not using) as the reason they have to increase the price.

Pricing is ridiculous.
In US single user should be $9.99 a month, $99.99 a year
No thanks
