Meh. Don't use YouTube much on phone and when I do I computer there have been no ads with html5 yet.

A "tax" for iOS? Seriously Google that is so thinly veiled. I don't use Youtube directly now, and certainly won't even think of using it in the future. Plus your app for the ATV is horrible and I hid it a long time ago. Does the app use flash too. lol.

Did you even read the article? It's more expensive on iOS because of Apple's in-app purchase tax.

Why should I pay for features that I can get for free with other alternatives? Probably so I can now pay Google to have everything in one place so they can mine more usage data out of me...

Background audio - jailbreak (free)
Google Play Music access - free if you upload your own tracks, if you want free streaming use Spotify
No ads - jailbreak (free)
Saving offline - same as above

I'm sure there are other tweaks on Android that allow the same features for free.

You currently don't have to pay a cent to get all the features (okay, sans streaming, but you can technically get it elsewhere) this subscription service is offering, and everything I listed is legal.

I would say that the subscription is certainly a great way to get around that growing problem, but ad revenue at YouTube has been increasing at a very steady pace, so it isn’t a threat that forced them into this. A "massive portion" of their audience is vastly overstating the prevalence of ad blockers.

For me, sitting through 10-30 seconds of blank space before getting to your video isn’t a great experience either.

The offline, background, and free use of Google Play Music, all included in the $9.99 monthly subscription, mean there is more value on offer than just, no ads.

And of course, if you’re a rabid fan of some of YouTube’s biggest stars, their exclusive new content will now sit behind a paywall.

All that said, I don’t think the majority of people I know will sign up for YouTube Red at $9.99 a month. But I do think there are millions, maybe tens of millions who will.

Great, but I'll stick with ads.

The best channels don't take the mick with ads anyway. New vsauce videos don't have pre roll ads, they only sometimes appear when you watch through older videos. Same thing for Charlieissocoolllike.

It does get annoying when you have to sit through a 30 second pre roll ad (that you can't skip) for a 2 minute Minecraft how-to video.

With Adblock it doesn't give you access to Google Play Music which is a competitor to Apple Music but available on iOS & Android.

So for 9.99 you get Ad Free Video AND a Full Streaming Music Service.

It's a no brainer.

I didn't see the music was included. Now my interest is peaked.
Can I pay with Google Play credits I wonder?

Is the rudeness required? Yes I read the article and I don't think you get my point, but I won't be rude about it.

Most vendors sell at the same price point on both platforms. They make more money per sales on the android as a result, but because the real revenue comes from the iOS platform they price based on iOS targets. Google is clearly sending a message here IMO.

Now please try to understand my point before you resort to rudeness. Thank you.

Wow! This is more expensive than Netflix or Amazon Prime. Who would want this anyway? Just wondering from this forum who want this and why?

Yeah I was reading up on how much money these youtubers make, it's insane.
Way too much for sure, but whatever, that is where the bubble is at in this decade, if you can break that bubble you are set. Advertising agencies pay way too much these days, I guess they do their math to make sure is feasible though.

Just one more thing to subscribe to and pay monthly? Pass. All these subscriptions are going to start adding up to more than a cable bill.

That's the point. The cost of producing, delivering, storing and supporting content hasn't gone down since people stopped ditching cable. It's gone up.

The response from the corporate world?
- Faster Internet that's more reliable and costs more
- More advertisements
- Higher subscription costs
- More unique content

Eventually, you're going to have to separately subscribe to HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube for a combined $70 a month on top of the $70 you're paying for Internet and now you've basically gone back to paying what you did 10 years ago for cable.

The fact that people didn't see this coming is more surprising. The Internet was this hip place we could be pirates and speak our mind and now it's regulated, monitored and costs the same as the other stuff we used to have.

Interesting that Google is passing the Apple tax to the consumer on iOS. Does Spotify and others do this?

It's too bad that background play used to be a feature in the iOS YouTube app, then it was removed and people have been requesting it for years, and now they want you to pay $155 per year to use it. Slap in the face.

To clarify, is it $12.99 if you purchase via the app store or just to use it on an ios device?
That will make a huge difference.

It definitely does.

From the article:

Google has also bundled a Play Music subscription into YouTube Red on iOS and Android, providing access to both services for a combined $9.99 or $12.99 monthly payment. YouTube Red's unlimited access to both streaming music, videos and more makes it an attractive competitor alongside rivals like Apple Music and Spotify.

-----------

Bottom line: it's still not worth it.
Not worth it to some. More than worth it to others. I've been on All Access for a while and like it a lot. Both mobile and web apps are top notch. My daughter (iPhone 6) is tied to my account so I can keep an eye on what she does and no purchases can be done without my knowledge. The mobile option of listening to the song or watching the video version from within the All Access app is pretty cool.

It's worth it to me. To each his own.

Netflix seems to be exempt for some reason.

I don't think you can subscribe to Spotify via the app, they direct you to go online.

So we have to pay $12.99 per month to be able to use the YouTube app in the background on our iPhones? Do I have that correct? That's been one of the most requested features for years and instead of actually implementing it long ago, they've decided that we must pay every month if we want to be able to do that?! It's a shame the new middle finger emoji doesn't work with MR.

$12.99 on iOS because Apple wants $3 for me to watch YouTube ad free. #thankssteve

Just noticed this includes Google Play Music, which is (was?) the same price.

So, it's Apple Music + Ad free YouTube + a Netflix like service ...

I bet the new Apple TV hates YouTube as much as the current one does ...

Or maybe that $3 cut will make them interested ...

The 'tax' is Apple's cut. It is the 'Steve Jobs' tax. #thankssteve

Also, this include Google Play Music, which means you have even more ...

Yes it would be but, including an Ad Free Video Service, Full Access to Google Play Music and audio play in background makes Apple Music look pretty pitiful now for the same price.

Google music is ok I guess as this is bundled but eh, not interested at all
