The 9.7 seems to have many more features.. I can see why the 12.9ers would be pi55ed! and a 1/3rd less weight. i think it has to be the best all round iPad right now. PC replacement - still not feeling it.
  • Live Photos
  • Autofocus with Focus Pixels
  • True Tone flash
  • Panorama (up to 63 megapixels)
  • Auto HDR for photos
  • Sapphire crystal lens cover
  • Improved local tone mapping
  • Improved noise reduction
  • 4K video
  • Slo-mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps and 720p at 240 fps
  • Cinematic video stabilisation
  • 5 megapixel photos
  • Retina Flash
  • More LTE bands

Depends on your outlook, I purchased my Pro less than a month ago, fully expecting a 9.7" Pro to be released. And I'd make the same purchase today.

9.7" has a 1/3 less weight, true, but a much smaller screen to go with it. So considering I bought the Pro for the 12.9" screen that rules out the new one right there.

As for improved cameras, no way will I ever use a massive tablet as a camera. I never even used my Air 2/Air 1/iPad 4/3/2/1/Mini/Mini 2/Mini 3 even a single time to take a photo. I'd still be happy if iPads didn't have cameras at all. Thing is, if I've got my iPad, I've also got my iPhone, I'll use that and when I know I'm going to want to take a proper photo I take my SLR.

Not fussed for the LTE, I've a massive data plan on my phone, no need for anything but WiFi on an iPad when I can just use my iPhone as a hotspot.

For me the only thing that might have been nice on the 12.9" would have been the true tone display. But that's not a deal breaker.

I'm happy to stick with the bigger screen/slightly better performance/ faster charging/faster Lightning speed/ability to lie flat of my iPad Pro. Doesn't sound outdated to me. Of course those are just my preferences, every one is different.

Most of the features people keep on listing are to do with the camera. Of which hell would freeze over before I started to walk around and take pictures with a tablet.

So basically every feature you listed is to do with the back camera, oh which almost no one seems to use anyway

I'd been toying with the idea of getting a pro cos I fancied the 12.9 screen. With the announcement of the smaller pro but with more features, I'm now thinking I might need to hold out a little longer for the next version of the 12.9

It's one thing if you've already bought the 12.9 prior but to go out now and buy a 12.9 (yes bigger screen) when you know its lacking features from the 9.7 seems a bit mad. Seems ill have to ride out my mini 2 a little longer

You mean some and no doubt the 12.9 owners are defending their product in the same way you see the 6S and 6S+ people doing. As for recording things on the bigger device, i think you are correct, it's simply too big, heavy and ungainly to carry around - but the mini and original isn't. We've certainly recorded video on it before. The other aspects around live photos is great too. No doubt when these feature appear on the 12.9 in 6month time they will be a revolution ;)

As for the performance, no doubt when people get their hands on them we'll see what that is in real terms but I'd expect with the lesser resolution that most people wont need or notice, the smaller device will be snappier and more responsive with no UI lag.

YMMV... but i still don't see any of these devices as a laptop replacement. apple have clearly gone all out to address the huge fall in sales and to many these additions to the classic size will make a difference.

How many times can I say this? The 12.9" iPad Pro that I had on Sunday is the same one I had today. I swear the better the Apple Keynote, the more "hurt" some are. It's kind of ridiculous. You think they should have gimped the 9.7" iPad Pro just to make you happy?

the 12.9 is not outdated per se, but certain elements are. and will be very soon, more and more. just natural tech evolution. surprised it hasn't happened quicker already. Gen2 will be fast out dated too, as will gen 3,4,5,6,7, etc etc.

saying that, it's still better than the competition hands down in my opinion. i know what i'd prefer to spend bucks on.

never ever get peeved when your beloved tech gets out moded 4 months later. thats the way of life. we all know it happens, get used to it :)

Then the argument changes to "yawnnnn. Underwhelming keynote. Apple is holding back features just to make money!"

Apple just can't win

The stupid part is that it really isn't that big of a deal to downgrade if one really wants. You should be able to sell your iPad Pro 12.9" at enough of a price to get the 9.7" if you "need" it that bad. So do it if you think that will make you happy. I am happier with my larger screen, better split-screening, etc. I actually use it as a quasi-laptop away from my desktop. That means I really don't want a 10 inch screen. Ugh.

Take price into consideration too - Staples has a 128GB Pro 12.9" for $799 (until 3/26/16) - $50 more than the 128GB Pro 9.7".

Couldn't agree more ... why buy a smaller version with less space for content and small on- and off-screen keyboard.

It's not faster, the only difference is the RGB backlight and the camera. The battery is smaller as well.
I'm also happy that my iPad Pro does NOT change its color profile on the fly.

Yes yes, I'm defending my purchase, I really don't see the point of having less of everything that is important to me.

With the prices going around for the bigger Pro, I wish I needed more than one. They are a serious bargain right now. Too bad I need only one. ;)

The only thing this means is that you shouldn't buy the Pro 9.7" on launch. Wait an while and it'll invariably drop in price, saving you $100 or more. It isn't even a long wait, within a month Target had 15% off iPad Pros....

Why do that? Then you are that much closer to the next keynote, when they will announce the next iPad Pro, and then Aaaaaaaaaaaagh! Why did I buy this piece of crap?

(As I type this from my completely awesome iPad Pro 12.9"...)

Nope not at all, the mini Pro may has diferent features but it also doesn't have some that the 12.9" one does. The displays I imagine will turn out to be almost identical (except the True Tone thing) so even though the specs are close, and it has a camera. It doesn't make the 4 month old iPad obsolete, they are different iPads, each with different features. But at the end of the day (my personal opinion) the only things that can be outdated is the Battery, CPU, GPU, and Display. And since the mini Pro didn't get a better battery and has slightly less power, it doesn't by any stretch of the word "outdate" the GI-Pad Pro. ;)

That's the point. If you buy it on launch day, you pay full price and you get shafted when they announce a new product or spec bump just a few months later.

Buying later at a significantly lower price is like "defensive driving" - or "defensive shopping" if you will - you're minimizing your losses, and if you want to sell to trade up, you'll lose significantly less money as a result.

Just a heads up, it's a feature that can be disabled in the settings, it's not a feature which you have no control over.

Let's face it, the reason people bought the larger Pro still remains untouched - people just want a bigger screen experience iOS on, something that it still holds. While I'll likely be getting the 9.7 iPP and never purchased the larger iPP, acting like the camera is a huge incentive on a tablet seems strange. Yes there are elements of the 9.7 that are superior, but it's definitely not enough to drive the larger option into redundancy.

And even if it was? It still doesn't change what you bought when you bought it. You are correct though. It is especially silly in this case when the 12.9" is still top dog in so many ways. Better proc speed, better battery, better graphics speed, etc.

Oh I know, I was completely being facetious. I didn't pull the trigger on my IPad Pro 12.9" until it was discounted a couple hundred bucks. ;)

Is it really? I don't mean the Dark Mode Yellow feature.
Honest question.

I was under the impression that the ambient light sensors control the RGB backlight independent of Night Mode.

Here is its

Still, I find it a pain to go back and forth to toggle it. I do design work and I don't want to be bothered with iOS adjusting my colors for me. The more I read into this feature, the less interested I am in returning my 12.9 Pro.

Yeah it can disabled, I saw a video last night on the Verge I think, just a toggle to turn it on/off.
